Where I Belong

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Darling I love and appreciate you
You′re the one I always turn to
Can count on and call upon
My best friend all day long
Your tenderness makes me strong
Your kisses turn me on
Your hugs make me strong
Your words of affirmation are my song
With you is where I belong
I am grateful and thank God for you
Every day and precious moment with you
Is to me the air I breathe
Oxygen that sustains me
Food the nourishes me
Water to my thirsty heart inwardly
Blessing me intangibly
Mightily and magnificently
Radiantly and gloriously
Consistently and continually
Securing my identity
Further constructing the man in me
While freeing the boy I like to be
Providing me life and liberty
Privately and publicly
Relationally and professionally
Globally and locally
Emotionally and spiritually
Wonderful intimacy and peaceful privacy
Wonderful happiness and marital bliss
Flexibility when necessary
Domestic delights
Whenever you are in sight
Together all wrongs are made right
Forgiveness and unconditional love
To overcome every disagreement and fight
Get through every financial spot that’s tight
Enraptured in each other’s arms
Before we turn out the light
When I awake I′m fresh
And carefree as a kite
No time for turmoil and strife
For we now have newness of life
As God above ingeniously leads us
Progressively teaches and brings us
Into all that He has for us
While most importantly working in us
To further mold and make us
As His son and daughter
He does wholeheartedly hold us
Always ready to lead and guide us
Into jubilee extraordinary
Therefore let’s live life celebratory!

Herm the Pickpocket

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

TO MOST PEOPLE, A TOWN WITH PICKPOCKETS IS A BAD THING, but to me, there could be no better place to practice some stealing of my own. There is, in fact, a gaggle of thieves who’s hangout or headquarters (if you want to call it that) is right near my apartment. I know them pretty well, and more importantly they recognize me, so they don’t steal nearly as much from me as they do from the normal passerby.

Their ring leader is named Herm and he’s the only minority–a Peruvian–in the entire group of white dudes. He’s always eating, any time of day, and always the same thing: this slimy phallic-shaped piece of rubber disguised as a hotdog. His head is not really a normal head in that he only has one ear–lost the second in some sort of bike accident. He is pretty fat, and has stubby legs that are straight and have no curves. The funniest part about him though, is that he always carries a pet bird named Tonto who he keeps not in a cage, but on a leash, the way you might your bichon fries. Tonto sits on his shoulder and can supposedly speak though I′ve never heard a word.

“Speak Tonto! Speak!”

Herm is the sort of guy who, if you didn′t know he was involved in his own little ring of unorganized crime, you might figure him to be a desk man or a bell boy–something in the hotel industry. He is sort of charming to people who he doesn′t steal from and if he reaches to scratch his head when you’re around him, you’ll see that he wears a Smurf collector’s item watch. Really takes away from the whole bandit shtick. I’ve seen him with other members of his family, his mother most often, doing some of the most ordinary things: grocery shopping, eating dinner, walking to church. Herm’s a pretty normal dude, it’s just that when other people reach into desk drawers, Herm reaches into pockets.

“Tonto! Speak!”

Herm is also very interested in outer space and claims that after he eats lunch, he’s starting a new TV show called Pimp My Spaceship. While no one really believes him, it is in all our best interests to humor him with his stupid little idea the way you might your four year-old. (”Yes honey, you can become a Transformer when you grow up.”)

I would usually be weary of a criminal who says he collects things, but Herm’s collection is fun: he collects frisbees. He keeps them stacked all neatly, like pancakes, in this box that appears to once have belonged to a top hat. Being from Paraguay, he has trouble with English and often confuses words like cheesesteak and cheapskate. This problem with English has actually cemented our bond as friends.

One fun thing about being an American in a foreign country is that I am–by default–an ambassador to the English language: my expertise and wisdom highly sought after. Everywhere I go, without any background check or anything, people will rely on me to be their source for everything English. Herm is one of my students, if you want to call him that, and I enjoy teaching him not because I want him to learn, but because listening to Herm try to speak English is incredibly entertaining to me. Going along with the abnormal theme of our relationship, is the fact that Herm for the most part, has no interest in learning normal English. No, he is strictly into porn terminology and food. A funny combination, but I′m not about to ask.

“Herm, Speak!”

Special Approaches Of Match-Making Or Kundli Milaan

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

There are the two vital factors in the matching of groom and bride horoscopes.
1 – If the bride & groom are Manglik or not?
2 – How many points (gurna) they are getting, above 18 to 36. Whereas there are 8 main points related to these points (gurna)

I – Varna, II – Vaisha, III – Tara, IV – Yoni, V – Grah Matri, VI – Garnkoot, VII – Bharkut and VIII – Naari.

There are as points oriented is Varna consists of 1 point, Vashya consist of 2 point, as 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 = 36 points (gurna).

Generally after matching the horoscopes of bride & groom, which shows matched horoscopes contain 18 to 36 points (gurna) and have no Manglik Dosha or Manglik Dosha has removed, the couple are not satisfied with each other, anyone out of both has the death possibilities, remaining childless and faces many hardships are the various problem that frequently faces by the couples. It is better to match the horoscope perfectly well instead of searching the solutions during the married life.

There are many important issues to be discussed in match-making. Perfect matchmaking can be able to predict the accurate happening of couples life. Whether their married life will be successful? Bears child or not? How about luck, assets and nature of each other can be reflected in the perfect matchmaking. After the necessary analysis, conclusion is that the married couple will lead their happy married life.

We must know that in the horoscope if there is Mars presence in Lagna, 4th, 7th , 8th and 12th house or it is on the front or back of the requisite house? It position remove the Manglik dosha or any other planet is absolving the Manglik Dosha or the Mars has been set on the horoscope? Or Mars is not infected by Rahu, Ketu? The Manglik decision is taking in account by going through these various factors.

It is given in the panchang in melapak sarni that if groom & bride have ashwini nakshatra, they get 28 points and one nari dosha. Whereas the scriptures states that

1 – “Aik Nakshastrah Jatanam Nari Dosho Na Vidhyatai” Means – If the bride groom has the same nakshastra then it does not considers Nari Dosha but why the 8 points are been cut?

2 – In the same way from the grooms rashi to bride to 5th house and bride rashi to grooms 9th house makes triangle (Navpancham), this yoga shows that son &amp grandson will be helpful for family.

But in panchaang the points has been cut in this triangle (Navpancham).

After considering the about myths and facts, the groom & bride’s perfect match-making report has to be analyzed.

A Brief Virgin Gorda Vacationers Guide Describing A Few Of The Islands Highlights

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Virgin Gorda is part of the British Virgin Islands in the British West Indies, as one of about 60 islands in the BVI, mostly uninhabited. As the third largest island in the BVI, Virgin Gorda has around eight square miles of land area as it’s 10 miles long by about 2 miles wide with around 1,400 permanent residents. Christopher Columbus must have thought that it resembled a robust woman recling as he named it fat virgin along with the whole island chain named for Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgin followers.

A great majority of the vacationers go to the Caribbean for the beaches and on Virgin Gorda, arguably the best beach to be found is at The Baths.
Here you will find giant boulders that were once liquid deposits of magma and due to the erosion of surrounding earth are now stacked in ways to create grottos and caves providing endless entertainment for beachgoers. Some of the other beaches on Virgin Gorda are Devil’s Bay National Park that is about a twenty minute walk from The Baths and is pleasantly secluded. Spring Bay, like The Baths, has large boulders scattered about and a very nice beach called The Crawl that is welcoming to families and children due to it’s placidity. Not far from Spring Bay is Trunk Bay that has a great beach facing west that is accessible by water or via a path from Spring Bay. Savannah Bay provides a sandy beach north of the yacht harbor and of course, not to be neglected is Mahoe Bay with a curving beach and beautiful blue water.

The BVI is renowned for excellent sailing conditions as well as dive sites that range from 15 to 80 feet and many areas have no appreciable current and is ideal for photographers. This area of the Caribbean doesn’t have any extreme drop off’s but it does have plenty of coral gardens and topographical variation to include canyons, tunnels, caverns, grottos, and wrecks. With the ambient ocean temperature at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the flora and fauna is prolific to say the least and divers won’t lack for activities.
The northern side of Virgin Gorda is mountainous, with Gorda Peak as the highest spot on the island reaching 1,370 feet enclosed by the Gorda Peak National Park. A lookout tower at the summit offers an excellent view of North Sound and Anegada as well as the land snaking it’s way to the southern end of the isle as well as other islands with their heads above the waves. Hikers may wish to consider excursions around the northern spine of the island to enjoy the views and semi-arid terrain.

Ness Notes (May 15)

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

TNT will carry both NBA games tonight (Detroit/Cleveland at 7:05 ET and San Antonio/Dallas at 9:35 ET), as all series will have completed four games after tonight’s play. Currently, the Heat lead the Nets 3-1 after a 102-92 win Sunday afternoon, while the Clippers and Suns are tied at 2-all, after LA’s 114-107 win last night.

My free play for Monday is on the Hou Astros over the SF Giants at 8:05 ET. I’m passing tonight in MLB but have a 22* in the NBA playoffs as I look to extend my current four-game postseason winning streak (won with the Clippers last night). Regular clients know that my 22*s are my highest star-rated plays and that my high-end (20 and 22*s plus LEGENDs) playoff relesases are 9-3 75% ATS in this year’s postseason!

The Pistons lead their series with the Cavs 2-1 and are favored by six points in tonight’s Game 4 with a total of 183 1/2. The Mavs are also up 2-1 in their series with the Spurs and are favored tonight by 2 1/2 points with a total of 190 1/2.

Home teams got off to a great start in this year’s postseason, winning 30 of the first 39 games played. However, they finished the first round on a 1-5 SU and ATS run and their struggles have continued into the second round. Home teams are 8-6 SU and just 5-9 ATS after 14 games in this round. That means home teams have gone 9-11 (6-14 ATS) over the last 20 playoff games.

The ‘overs’ have dominated so far in this second round, with 10 of the 14 games topping the posted total. That continues a trend that saw nine of the final 10 games in the first round go over the total, meaning 19 of the last 25 playoff games have gone over. And defense is supposed to win championships?

The famous or infamous “Zig-Zag” theory has been very streaky during the postseason. It opened by going an impressive 19-8-2 ATS to start the first round but ended the round on an eight-game losing streak. However, “zig-zaggers” have won eight of the first 10 games of the second round, bringing the overall record to 27-18-2 or plus-7.2 units.

Monday’s games

What’s up with the Pistons? Losing Game 3 was no great shock, as Detroit has now lost 10 of its last 11 Game 3s on the road. However, what is surprising is the team’s offensive power outage. The Pistons scored 113 points in Game 1, fell to 97 in Game 2 and all the way to 77 points in Game 3. The Cavs were able to win Game 3 with one good quarter.

Cleveland entered the fourth quarter having shot just 17-of-56 (30.4 percent) while scoring 53 points. However, they outscored the Pistons 33-21 in the 4th, making 11-of-15 FGs and 9-of-9 FTs. James had 15 points in the quarter, finishing with his second-ever playoff triple-double (21-10-10). Detroit should bounce back but Piston backers will have to pay dearly, as Detroit is currently a six-point choice.

For Cleveland to tie the series, one would think James would need more help. Hughes is likely to miss again (maybe not bad news as he’s shot just 31.8 percent in the postseason) and neither Ilgauskas nor Gooden has played well. Ilgauskas is averaging just 8.8-5.8 over his last five games while Gooden has scored in double digits just once in seven games (averaging 7.3 PPG) since getting 24-16 in Game 2 of the Washington series.

Is this really the Mavs′ year? Dallas has taken a 2-1 lead in its series with San Antonio and history tells us that in 23 previous playoff series with Duncan, the Spurs have trailed after three games just four times, eventually losing the series each time! Duncan has been brilliant, averaging 31.3 PPG and 11.3 RPG (he averaged just 18.3 PPG vs Sacramento) but like James, he′ll need help.

Maybe the most surprising thing has been San Antonio’s inability to stop Dallas from scoring. The Spurs were second to the Grizzlies in PPG allowed this year (88.8-to-88.5) but have allowed Dallas to average 108.5 PPG while getting to the free throw line 93 times in Games 2 and 3. Nowitzki set a franchise playoff record for FT attempts (24) and makes (21) in Game 3. However, he did sprain his ankle late in Game 3 and may not be 100 percent tonight.

MLB notes

Heading into a new week (interleague play is coming this weekend!), the Padres own the longest active winning streak in the majors at five straight, with the Tigers and Phillies each owning four consecutive wins. The Padres trailed the Dodgers 5-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth back on April 30 but rallied to win that game and have won 14 of 16 since. The Phillies began their turnaround on the same day as well, having won 13 of 14.

The Indians own the longest active losing streak at six straight losses and are now just 17-21 after opening the season 6-1. The Cubs are next with four straight losses but that’s not the half of it! The Cubbies have lost 12 of their last 13 games, getting outscored 75-28 in the process.

I talked last week about all the high scoring games and it should be noted that just six of MLB’s 30 teams have played more ‘unders’ than ‘overs’ through Sunday’s games. Four of those six teams have played just one more under than over, with only the Rockies (15-21-2) and the Tigers (11-23-3) as real ‘under′ teams to-date. The list of ‘over′ teams includes Florida (24-9-2), Toronto (23-11-2), Minnesota (23-12-2), Baltimore (23-13-2) and Cleveland (23-13-2).

The Royals may own MLB’s worst record at 10-25 but five other teams have been bigger “moneyburners” through Sunday’s action. The Royals are minus-$857 (at 100 per game) but the five-worst teams in MLB are the 17-21 Indians (minus-$888), the 11-24 Marlins (minus-$928), the 13-25 Nationals (minus-$1085) and the 11-27 Pirates (minus-$1605). The money leaders are the 24-13 Tigers (plus-$1170) and the 23-15 Reds (plus-$979).

American Idol’s Notorious Judge Supports PETA

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

PETA, an International non-profit group that promotes animal protection and contests animal abuse, has found its new endorser in the form of American Idol judge Simon Cowell. The infamous judge will be promoting a public service awareness campaign that deals with animal welfare, specifically pertaining to the cruelty of leaving dogs in a vehicle on a hot day.

Cowell strongly asserts his sentiments over the subject matter he previously experienced firsthand. He also realized that not a lot of people are aware that leaving dogs inside a car might cause danger or even kill the animal. And while this is just one crusade, he explores other animal issues, which need to be addressed such as the fur trade with dogs.

Cowell, a 47-year old British artist, is an executive for Sony BMG. Apart from being a judge on American Idol, he is responsible for music themes of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Zig and Zag, and the World Wrestling Federation. Previously, he was also a judge on Pop Idol, The X Factor, and Britain’s Got Talent

This endorsement of Cowell surprises most people, especially avid fans of the reality talent show American Idol where he depicts a stern and rough judge, often uttering straightforward and harsh remarks in auditions and during the show. He maintains that treating people is very different with treating animals. He also attributes his good karma on his behavior towards animals. Cowell said, “Everyone should love animals. If you’re good to animals, your life will be good. And my life is good because I’ve been good to animals. If I see a baby, it’s a baby. If I see a puppy, it’s a whole different ball game. He also emphasized on the importance of loving animals on American Idol. He added, “The people I work with, they’re all animal lovers. It’s part of the criteria for judging the show: you’ve got to like animals.”

Soriah - “Chao Organica in A Minor” (Beta-lactam Ring Records) - Music Review

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Mysterious overtones collide and swirl, forming double-helix cathedrals of sound. The gothic and solemn voice of a church organ folds on itself, becoming two… three… four new instruments. These layers usher us into an interior space of reflection and transformation. The organ and guttural whistlings of the Tuvan-style throat singing have brought us here. What we do in this space is up to us.

These are the musings that arise upon listening to the wonderful new release by Soriah, Chao Organica in A Minor. Soriah is a musician/artist/performance artist from Portland, Oregon. Although he has self-released a number of extremely limited CD-R’s, this is his first disk proper, and Beta-lactam has pulled out all the stops.

Artist Markus Wolfe (of both Waldteufel and Crash Worship fame) created the bold, pagan-inspired glyphs that decorate the cover. In addition to the black-line art, he extended the theme by creating stamps that are imprinted in gold-colored ink on the surface of the thick card-stock cover.
Soriah’s art is a combination of Butoh dance, yoga practice, and magick ritual. He creates elaborate costumes from various ethnic clothing and masks. The spaces he performs in are chosen with great care, and include churches, desert dunes, and urban treetops. This combination of musical choices, visual presentation, and atmospheric enhancement make for a powerful experience, and to a great extent these values shine through on Chao Organica in A Minor.

The disk is comprised of two main tracks, “Exordium″ and “Soliloquy and Epilogue”. Each song has several movements within it, but they tend to move towards an opaque wash and delirious blur. The overriding outcome for a listener is a welcome trip through a hypnotically beautiful, yet slightly sinister, soundscape.

Winning Baseball Picks - It’s About Value

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

When making baseball picks, inexperienced handicappers generally focus most of their attention on starting pitching. After all, in no sport does one man have as much impact on the odds than does baseball’s starting pitcher. The man on the mound can cause a swing in the odds of sometimes as much as a hundred points. But just how much of an impact does he really have on a game‘s outcome?

The most commonly used pitching stat is of course ERA (earned run average). When it comes to ERA, low means good, high means bad. Roy Halladay boasted an ERA of 3.19 in 2006, more than a full run better than averaging a quality start, which is an ERA of 4.50. He was solid, reliable, and above all, damn good. As you would expect, Mr. Halladay was often the favorite. In fact, only one time were you able to get him at plus money. In 14 of his 32 starts he was a favorite of more than -200. In those starts, the Blue Jays were 10-4, an outstanding team win percentage of 71%. However, they barely broke even in those starts for those bettors who backed them, generating a profit of just .19 of a unit. A different outcome in just one of those games would mean a loss overall.

C.C. Sabathia was also one of 2006’s more dominant pitchers with an ERA of just 3.22, .03 worse than Halladay. Unlike Roy, who at least did a little better than breaking even for his backers, C.C. lost over four units. In his 28 starts, the Indians were only a .500 team (14-14).

One of the more profitable pitchers in 2006 was, of all people, Steve Trachsel. His crappy 5.22 ERA generated a profit of over eight units. Contrast that with the semi-retired and not quite crotchety old fart Roger Clemens. In his 19 starts he had a miniscule ERA of 2.30. Of the dozens of pitchers in 2006 who started more than ten games, only one was better than Roger and that was Francisco Liriano. But Roger was a big loser in terms of money (-4.9 units).

True, there are some pitchers who sport flashy ERAs and make money. In 2006 Johan Santana was one, but the point of this article is to show that the effect a starting pitcher has on a game is not as significant as most people would think. Certainly not as much as the sports books think.

Precision Plays estimates the impact of a starting pitcher on a baseball picks outcome at around 50%, where sports books use the starting pitcher to determine most if not all of the odds on a game. We don’t fault them for that and do not feel they are mistaken in their approach. Because the betting public puts so much emphasis on starting pitching, the books have to as well.

This discrepancy, the difference between how important the starting pitcher really is and how important the sports books say he is, represents the single most important element in making a decision on any baseball pick. Baseball has the most developed and complicated system of statistics of any sport on the planet, and you can take all of them a toss them out the window because they mean very little when it comes to winning money betting baseball. There is only one thing you need to determine and one thing only when making a baseball pick, and that’s value.

Have You Been To France?

Friday, May 29th, 2009

A friend sent me a postcard from France. The rolling hills of Provence, lush vineyards and charming chateaus - yes, I remember it well.

When my husband and I went to France, I packed so much he accused me of trying to smuggle things into the country for a garage sale. I’m a girl scout at heart. I wanted to be prepared.

To be prepared for the change in time a friend advised me to stay awake on the flight and go to bed at my usual time - local time. Blurry-eyed and exhausted, I collapsed into bed in Paris at 10pm, having lost a day - but not my luggage. By 10am (1am PST) the next day I was tempted to call my friend to thank her for her advice.

The advice on hotels came from a guide book, but hotels in France are like hotels everywhere - overpriced and understaffed. Of course, if I’d had the right adapter to plug in my hair dryer, I wouldn’t have needed one hotel’s electrician to help dry my hair. If I’d restrained myself from buying funky souvenirs, I wouldn’t have needed bellboys to help with my luggage.

Small things, such as the corkscrew shaped like the Eiffel Tower, weren′t problems. However, transporting a pillow that looked like a giant croissant and umbrellas decorated with French fries were problems - for my marriage.

John didn’t think France was the place to Christmas shop. John’s idea of a souvenir was his now-gray underwear, on which a hotel laundry had written his name in large, indelible letters. If John had given me time, I would have introduced the French to laundry whiteners and brightened their lives.

In France our lives were full with quaint buildings, which would be called dilapidated in the States and there was always one more museum to visit - but not by taxi. French taxi drivers should have to take their foot off the gas pedal as often as they take their eyes off the road.

I should have taken my eyes off the pastries, but I couldn′t. A morning break with coffee and pastry; followed by an afternoon break with wine and pastry; and, of course, pastry for dessert at dinner - I carried memories of those pastries home on my hips.

Yes, I remember France. If we go there again, I’m sending a postcard to myself. It will say, “Wish you were here″.

Masking European Animism

Friday, May 29th, 2009

The ancient peoples of Europe were more fond of masks and religious ritual than you
would suspect if you saw Europeans today. Mask wearing and shamanism was part
and parcel of everyday life in ancient Western European tradition, say researchers.

There are stories abound about African and North American tribal shamans but not a
lot is known about ancient European peoples’ involvement with masked ritual or the
practice of magic. That is why finding out about similarities between the ideas behind
masks from around the world and those originating from European soil, is a
discovery of intriguing and real beliefs.

The less obvious link of European societies with shamanism or religious ritual than
for instance the North American native Indian customs or magic activity in the past is
due to the more ‘sanitised’ way Europe has developed because of church
interference in people’s lives. The church dominance virtually stamped out any pagan
ritual.

It was not until after 1960, when the Americans experienced a revival of the
interest in shamanism, that much has become known about the European version of
the practice of magic and mask wearing. There is more verifyable information about
the true roots of Western European civilisation than initially suspected.

“The spirit if not the exact practise of shamanism has been passed on through
Europe′s generations”, one authority on the subject, Leigh Ann Hussey, believes. The
earliest recordings of ceremonies involving masks were found in the caves of the
Trois Freres (Three Brothers) in France where paintings of a Paleolithic scene
depicting European animism of the first order.
Ian Bracegirdle, a mask expert, describes the cave: A central figure stands wearing
the head and antlers of a deer. He stands, shaman like, surrounded by animals.

Animals that are important to the culture he represents. Some of the animals no
longer exist in this area. Ibex, reindeer, bison, stag and horses. The shaman, for that
is what he seems to be, stands, a human figure amongst the potential food.
It is believed that the paleolithic cave served as a place where hunters were initiated.
The sorceror or shaman was symbol to sympathetic magic. He wore ears and horns
of a stag, the eyes and beak of an owl, the bearded face of an old man, the tail of a
wolf, the paws of a bear and the legs of a dancing shaman. He stood in front of
painted hunting murals. The Shaman served as mediator between humans and their
venerated animal kin.

This is pretty much the best evidence in tangible form that we have of our ancestors’
animistic beliefs. It dates back 10,000 years and is accompanied by an abundance of
myths and stories showing our ancestors had plenty of similar ideas. A close analogy
exists in the stories of Kernunnos, forest god of the later Celts. The masks express
animism to some extent.

His information is confirmed by Ms Hussey, who went on a hunt in European
shamanism and found when she examined ancient sources, that she did not need to
borrow from other traditions. “It is clear that tribal Europe had as strong a shamanic
tradition as, for example, any of the American Indian tribes,” she said.

Summing up the general symbolism that unites masks from around the globe,
Bracegirdle says that there are many striking similarities between the ancient cultures
of the Pacific West Coast of North America and the tribal traditions of Africa. Symbols
that all these cultures share are relating to fertility, the hunted animal, ancestors,
initiation into rites, circumcision, cannibalism real and symbolic, healing and crossing
over into the spirit world for guidance and healing powers or to appease the gods or
ancestors are the accompanying ideas behind masks.

Not a lot has been passed on from generation to generation in any much
recognisable form or shape, but among the most powerful links is the seasonal
nature of many traditions we still know about. In the UK, the Green man and the
Hobby horse are two potent examples. “To me there is a tremendous link which is
bound up with the very nature of the people we are and how we have developed. Our
formative roots live in our societies now”, believes Bracegirdle.

The links to ancient beliefs can also be found in many European languages. When
we say in English that we are going berserk, we even directly refer to the shamanic
state of extasy. The adjective comes from the noun ‘berserker’, or ‘berserk’, the Old
Norse for ‘wild warriors’ or ‘champions’. ‘Ber’ referring to ‘bear’ and ‘serkr’ to ‘shirt’ or
‘coat’.

These berserkers became frenzied in battle, howling like animals, foaming at
the mouth, and biting the edges of their iron shields as if they acted in a Nike
commercial. Berserker is first recorded in English in the early 19th century, long after
these wild warriors ceased to exist. This is illustrative of how the tradition seemingly
interrupted, still lived on.

Similar “Bear Doctors” stories have been found among California tribes. In some
cases, the Berserkr or Ulfserkr would even eat the heart of the bear or wolf to gain its
power. Another feast of hearts occurs in the seiðr trance, as described above.

Not a lot was known about Western shamanism until it hit the limelight in the 1960
and the undoubted expert in the field is the late Mircea Eliade, a religion historian
who taught at the Sorborme in Paris and later at the University of Chicago.

He described Shamanism, or ‘witchcraft’ as it is referred to also, as not a religion but
more as a technique. Shamanism, he says, is ‘not strictly medicine men/women,
magicians, or healers’. This is the conclusion of extensive studies of the phenomenon
around the world in his book ‘Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy’.

He
believes that shamans are not the same as priests they may have coexisted with
priests or even have fulfilled priestly functions as well as shamanic ones. A shaman
was more a mystic than a priest or a minister.
A shaman was not “possessed”, as many people now believe, says Eliade. Neither
was the shaman a medium or trance channeler. “Shamans control the spirit beings
with whom they work, or at least they do not surrender to them. Like a medium or
channeler, a shaman may appear unconscious when working, but upon returning, the
shaman can tell where he or she has gone”, he says.

The shaman is not the instrument of the spirits. Traditional shamans cure people
through their trances, accompany the souls of the dead to the Otherworld, and
communicate with the gods. “This small mystical elite not only directs the
community’s religious life but, as it were, guards its ’soul.”

Modern day processions where you can still see old masks being worn include
processions in which giants and witches are displayed. These and other
masquerades are among the more powerful tangible links we still have to ancient
witchcraft ritual.

In well known childrens’ stories and folklore narrative, the links are also obvious.
Dragons for instance are examples creatures pervading every alley you can imagine
of old folklore and mythology, straight into modern times stories. Descriptions of the
beast’s benevolence vary from the playful Puff (of Peter Yarrow’s song) to the sinister
Smaug in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”. Babylonian legends portray the Queen of
Darkness as a multi-headed dragon - Tiamat. Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty
features a battle between Prince Phillip and the evil Maleficent about a curse than
can only be broken by three fairies. Likewise, the Germanic myth “Die Nibelungen”
climaxes with the battle between Siegfried and the giant Fafnir, who has transformed
himself into a dragon in an effort to become more frightening.

Our reaction to the physical characteristics of the dragon is another element that we
share with and which connects us to our ancestors. Around the world the beasts are
typically depicted as huge lizards, larger than elephants on average. Long fangs are
generally accepted as are twin horns of varying length. Western cultures generally
include large bat-like wings giving the dragon the capability of flight. But eastern
dragons, usually wingless, use a more magical means of flying. Eastern dragons also
tend to be more snake-like in nature, albeit with front and rear legs.
