About Feng Zhengjie - A Chinese Artists

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Feng Zhengjie was born on 1968 in Sichuan Province, China he lives and works in Beijing, China. When Zeng Fanzhi was at school (1987-91), he particularly liked the work of the German Expressionist painters. In the third year of his studies, he put Soviet Realism aside and began to explore expressionistic approaches to painting. His works of this period have further echoes of another of his favorite artists, Beckman, but when it came to creating work for his degree show, the Xiehe series, Zeng Fanzhi had already established his own style and the impact of the work had won him a strong reputation in Chinese art circles…

Feng Zhengjie paints striking contemporary women. With their colored hair, richly hued clothes and luscious, expressive lips, the women appear irresistibly dazzling. And yet, the wandering expressions in their eyes render them elusive and enigmatic.

These strange, unknowable eyes have become Feng’s signature style. Feng studied to MA level at the Fine Art education department of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Art between 1988 and 1995. After 1989, Feng rejected both socialist realism and Western academic art, turning instead to the questions raised by China’s emerging contemporary art scene. He developed a more critical outlook with regards to society.

In response to the new issues confronting China, Feng Zhengjie decided to take inspiration from the popular images he had grown up with in rural Sichuan. Critics are unanimous in placing Feng’s paintings in the realm of the critique of contemporary consumer society this was especially clear in the “Romantic Trip” series, which pictured young couples in the expensive wedding ceremonies now fashionable amongst certain sections of Chinese society.

Walt Disney’s Horror Movie

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

In 1934, when Walt Disney called for a meeting among his artists, a rumor had spread that he was going to shut the studio down and they would all be left unemployed during the great depression. Instead he personally told them in his own spellbinding way the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which he intended to make into his first feature length film. It was a risk unlike any other he had taken before. The film would cost a million and a half dollars at a time Disney was spending anywhere from ten to thirty thousand on his short cartoons. Doubts came from his wife Lillian and his brother and business partner Roy, who were sure they would be in debt for most of the rest of the lives. Also nervous was Walt’s backer Bank of America, who at one point interrupted the production by cutting off his credit. Then there were the heads of the other studios like MGM, Universal and Warner Brothers. They would gather for their weekly poker games at the Hillcrest Country Club and speculate that Walt, who they called “the Mickey Mouse Man”, would never succeed, no one would sit still for an hour and a half to watch a cartoon. And the press referred to Snow White as “Disney’s Folly”.

Despite the doubters and his own health problems (he suffered from a thyroid condition), Walt pressed forward relentlessly for three years. The key to the film, as far as Disney was concerned was the evil queen/peddler woman. Snow White was sympathetic, the dwarfs were humorous, but the villain had to be horrifying to keep the audience interested. The vocals were performed by a renowned stage actress named Lucille Laverne. Her haughty voice was a great fit as the queen, but her playing of the character after she transformed into the old crone had some at the studio worried. “Wait, I have an idea”, she said. She left the recording room for a few minutes then returned. “I′m ready”. She delivered her lines in a way that chilled and thrilled the Disney staff. After she finished there was applause and she was asked what she did when she left. She smiled and said,” I took my teeth out!”

Walt’s calculations were correct, Snow White and Seven Dwarfs was a hit throughout the entire world in 1938 and for many years beyond, keeping audiences riveted. The only down side for Walt was that maybe the peddler woman was a little too horrifying, he was disturbed by reports from Radio City Music Hall in New York where the film was setting box office records. It turned out that every few days the theater management had to replace seats. . . due to excessive wetness.

The Nostalgic Beauty Of The Retro Vinyl Record Player

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Wow, it’s been some 25 years since the launch of the Compact Disc, which has come close to totally wiping out the existence of vinyl records but not quite. Many now predict the same will happen with CD since the advent of mp3’s and music downloads but in my opinion there will always be a nostalgic value towards, or back to the old retro music players. Yes, vinyl produces flawed sound quality but it can be fabulous in it’s own right.

While CDs are robust, reliable, and convenient and produce good quality sound, the good old-fashioned vinyl records offer qualities such as rhythmic timing and a realistic midrange tenderness that CD can’t compete with.

You just can’t replicate that golden vintage sound that a vinyl record player produces with your old tunes from your childhood. For some reason the feeling inside from playing a good ol’ Elvis song seems to take you back to that time and make it feel like it was yesterday that you had popped down to the record store to purchase the record.
Reminiscing your younger days can be a joy and for some, there is great sentimental value being able to still play songs of when they first met the husband or wife or maybe a song that their father or mother used to sing to them as a child.

What also makes the turntable record player charming in its own right is the fact that you can observe it’s moving parts as it gracefully spins round. This for me makes it feel so real being able to watch it in action.

There are now many new retro record players on the market designed for nostalgic purposes so you can once again bring out the record collection. Maybe you had thrown out the one you used to have in favour of keeping up with the CD and mp3 revolution but if you kept your records then its worth having a record player to play them on. As well as the old nostalgic versions on market there are plenty of modern record players out there so if you want something that is uber cool and want to blend old with new then they are a great option.

Whatever turntable you decide to buy retro or modern, remember that it’s a subtle music machine that’s capable of great things but it will need taking care of to keep it calibrated and aligned properly so that your records spin effortlessly with a silk glide. With that in mind retro record players may well still be around in another 25 years!

I-Koma

Up & Coming…

“We are no strangers to genre merging bringing more obscure music to narrow minded mainstream chart fans what with The Kooks indie pop that flirts delicately with the acoustic side of straight-back indie guitar sounds and lightly courts bouncy Brit-pop-esk tempos yet maintains the safe pop vocals combined with softer lyrics; and Jamie T’s reggae-garage-indie-pop. This review is of an as yet untapped resource who will hold you hand and pull you towards the return of emphatic dirty Rock-pop.

Since Donny Tourette’s failure to launch into the public eye with his laughably self indulgent not quite controversial TV appearances and his album which tries just a little too hard to be ‘rock and roll’ – it is my delight to find a band whose dirty charm and selfish arrogance is by no means sycophantic, and is actually backed up by riffs and melodies conducive to the Rock-pop genre.

I-Koma is like making love to Tommy Lee and Luke Pritchard at the same time. Yes, you are tied up and smashed to pieces with ballsy riffs and a classic melting electric sonorousness, but I-Koma will tell you they love you whilst doing it and caress you ears with permissive harmonic vocals.

Despite being slightly let down by the material found on that voyeuristic window of myspace we all seem to love, the bands new material has managed to shake off that incubus cliché and replace it with something untamed yet crafted, raw yet catchy, sounding reminiscent of early Audioslave – but with an attractive English pop bounce.

On stage the band this does nothing to disappoint, seducing there audience effortlessly. Aesthetically pleasing, with all the trimmings of iconic big hair and dirty leather, Lanky front man Davey Perry’s cavalier arrogance not dissimilar to a certain ex-libertine, makes you want so much to hate the band but persuades you indecently to be attracted to them like the cool kids at school, making you want to take drugs to impress them and hoping secretly that they will acknowledge you, back combed hair and cheeky ripped jeans, as one of them.

To categorised and attempt to vaguely pigeon-hole the bands sound, I-Koma sits boisterously chomping at the bit in that precious space between the classic Full Foo-fighter/ Nirvana sound and the pop riddled Mcfly, holding the hands of young pop/rock fans with nicely polished vocals, all the while leading them away from the familiar southern counties radio rubbish towards better more intense sex, drugs and rock n roll. Picking up where Puddle of Mudd and Nine Black Alps failed, this stereotypically ‘Rock n Roll’ based quartet appeal as much as a product image to any music consumer, and flag the press down, seeking attention relentlessly with a superior consistent sounding music and technically astute fierce base lines. Be prepared for this sticky- to – touch dirty Rock pop to be a firm summer festival favorite.”

Art of Living and You

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Hi all. So what if I don’t know to blog? I have come on the block. Oh! No, this is not me telling. You know I was pushed into blogging when I just became aware of the word. And the words above are the generous advice of that pusher. He is a friend of long standing. If I have to blame him, I have to blame for reasons that are countless. You know he is such an affable fella and a friendly devil kinda guy that you can’t blame him even when you want to. Secretly I confessed to the fact that for many things I am today, he is the person that can take credit.

After all why should he do it to me or is he just kind to me alone? He is a couple of years older than I. he was a form ahead of me in school too. He, as I know was the most bubly and chirpy guy as a school boy. Oh! My…he was talking from anything to every thing though the topics naturally were limited to our age bound world. The games, dresses he had purchased from his pocket money and that blue skirt of our teacher. I did really enjoy the moments he used to narrate all these in his inimitable style, sometimes exaggerating sometiimes in an emotional voice. I don’t remember disliking or objecting to anything except for that one day when he described the length of his teacher’s legs. I was a bit frieghtened as I protested. He laughed at me first and then just switched over.

He was not like it as I knew. This thing bugged me all night long. I can’t express what exactly I should call the thoghts that crawled my mind. But it is also true that appreciation for him surfaced strongly. But it never occured to me that he was growing up. Or was he grown up already?

More than anything else what brought me to adore him was his integrity. For some reason or the other I could not go to school or play without him. With him by my side, I felt safer always. He made fun off me, ragged me. But as always, his pranks showed me I had to grow more.

Now, in retrospect I think of him. He is coming back to our town after 32 years. They moved south after he finished high school. Later he called me to tell he had to give up further schooling for pursuing some job. He married a southerner taller than his own self. He built a home there and grew mango trees all around. This brings an incidence back to memory. In the mango season, while returning from school, we had to pass by a mangrove. And there was a hefty watchman gaurduing it. But my friend was all too clever for him. He used to yell and coo standing infront of the gate as if somebody else was trying to thieve mangoes and he wanted to alert the watchman. My friend was so quick to sense if the watchman wasn’t around when he didn’t turn up immediately. He would dash in, in big strides and whew.. would pluck a few mangoes. Always more for him and one or two for me. I didn’t dare ask why.

He is coming to me. To see me. He couldn′t even attend my marriage. He just sent a condolence letter when my dad expired. This had disturbed me deeply as I needed him besides me when I thought the world was getting washed away from under my feet. When he called up to tell he is coming here, it relieved me. I didn′t ask any more questions.

I recieved him at the airport. My wife was all curious about him as she just knew him through my narrations. he was looking more aged than he actually was.A very thin grey patch on his pate. He just grinned to me but still I could sense the affection unaltered.

Back home, he gave a shocker. He had blood cancer in the advanced stage. Over many coffees he narrated his story. He had lost hopes. His only daughter refused to see him for long time now for just he did not like her fiance. The boy belonged to a rich family. For once, he appeared to be seeking my suggestion. His days were numbered. He had built a big estate that he didn’t just want to give it to his daughter or waste it. Even at his lurking death, it filled me with gratitude coz he was asking me for suggestion. My wife was watching him, tears filled in her eyes, as he shoved the registration papers of his estate. He made all properties in my name.

He didn’t give me any chance to refuse it. For nth time it reminded me why I adored him. He had all the faith in me. He had calculated everything in advance. He familiarised me with his properties, business dealings, and the charity that he started of late and requested me to continue. He didn’t want to do all these at his death bed. I could not stop revering him for all that he is. A friend, a philosopher, a guide, and a brother. I am jumping into blogging (I hope this is not blogging) just because my thoughts can be understood by some soul just like him, on the net.

Green And Growing Or Ripe And Rotten

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Fall in love with learning something new. Listen means to receive, learn means to accept what you receive not neccessary to approve at this time. To keep your life green and growing explore new subjects. There are no uninteresting subjects, only people that are not interested.

The most exciting thing about learning is that there is more to learn. Are you having enough enjoyment? How much happiness can you stand? Knowledge is the root of all good! Lies are the root of all evil. When your body is hungry you know it. When your mind is hungry, you start getting ripe and rotten. Some people do not get out much. Thank God for Television. The travel channel. The Discovery Channel. The Internet. Attend home and garden shows, boat shows, international car shows.

The past was so interesting, however the future is pure excitement for those willing to listen (receive new ideas) learn (accept new ideas not necessarily approve of them) and change how you think!

Never change who you are, never change how you learn. Change how you think. We are living learning problem solving beings because we think. Two heads are better than one, three heads are better than two, except when they are arguing.

Language is the dance of life. Dance with as many people as possible and listen. “Do not write anything you can phone, do not phone anything you can talk face to face, do not talk anything you can smile, do not smile anything you can wink and do not wink anything you can nod.” Earl K. Long Famous and infamous Legend in Louisiana Politics.

When life gets you down, it could be because your mind is starving for a new experience. Go out to a movie, walk through a shopping mall and talk and listen to strangers. You do not stop learning, because you get older, you get old because you stop learning. There are old people that are young and young people that are old. The earth is very old and it is still learning that is how it stays young. The song says, “Fairy tales can come true it can happen to you, if you are young at heart.”

Language is the dance of life!
Keep dancing in language with as many people as possible!

Lactose Intolerant? It could be a good thing

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Lactose Intolerant Individuals may prove a bonus in Space Missions. Lactose intolerant individuals have huge problems with gas from the inability to process certain dairy products and foods. Therefore such an individual after eating will create gas, methane, which could be used as fuel. There are methane based fuel cell units available and a few companies, which have such portable devices now. And some will be online soon;

lbl.gov/Science-Articles/Archive/MSD-fuel-cells.html

mtpc.org/2004dev/cleanenergy/cells.htm

Hydrogen can be generated from methane. That lactose intolerant individual maybe much more valuable than once thought. By using this gas as a source needed to run a fuel cell we may also help keep batteries charged in space craft for explorers, army communications personal and for survival situations. The human body has the ability to generate waste and if properly monitored, stored and re-used it may just be enought to keep them alive and powered up.

As NASA explores ways to power up space colonies and allow ways for explorers to survive the deep of space, all options must be left open and maybe some body orfices too? Currently scientists and researchers are trying to figure out ways to recycle and reuse body fluids, human waste and water for long-term space travel? Some day you may wish you were lactose intolerant, but for now keep the hot air coming. Just sit next to the other members of the crew.

Monologues: Make a Great Impression, Show Them Your Very Best

Friday, August 29th, 2008

So how do you choose the right monologue?

One important suggestion we have to make is that before choosing your audition monologues you should find some background information on the company you will be auditioning for. This will help you decide what kind of monologues you should prepare for that particular audition.

Always have two audition monologues prepared. In almost all cases the audition will only call for one audition monologue, but on the off chance that the directors are interested but still very indecisive as to weather to call you back. The director may ask if you have anything else prepared. Do not answer with an emphatic “Yes!” The best answer should be a casual “Yes, there is another piece I have been working on,” or something of the like. Make sure both pieces are very polished and well rehearsed, make sure also that the characters of each piece are not alike—they should be different to show off your versatility.

If you have the opportunity to perform/audition both audition monologues, do not be afraid to take a few moments to take a few deep breaths and get into character before starting your second piece. Having told the director/casting crew that you have been “working on” this piece will give them a good impression for two reasons: first, that you have not practiced this one as much and yet it was performed very well. Second, that you are continuously working on your acting skills and versatility as an actor. I cannot state it enough: Always have two audition monologues prepared.

Don’t be afraid to seek coaching for your audition monologues. After all, you will receive a lot of feedback and direction from the director of whatever show you are in if you get the role. It is definitely not “cheating” to seek guidance while preparing to audition. Some of the best acting resources are teachers and tutors at acting schools, but there are also public acting workshops that can help you prepare your piece(s). I would also recommend preparing more than one piece for your audition—both very polished. Just in case the casting members want to see more the first time around.

Include movement in your monologue—do not just stand there. Gestures will help portray your character’s personality. Do not fidget, unless of course your character is one prone to fidgeting. Look into the eyes of the casting members there. If that is too scary (which it may be) focus somewhere at the back of the theatre or just above their heads—don’t look down! Again, unless your character is one prone to looking down—a character with little confidence, maybe hunched shoulders etc. Be careful with choosing these types of characters for your audition monologues, though. It makes it harder for the casting crew to hear you and it rids them of the ability to assess you facial expressions as you continue through the hopefully dynamic monologue.

The best way to impress the casting members is with confidence, complete transformation into the character you portray, and expressiveness in the body and in the face. Prove to them that you know how to become another person—that’s what acting is. Your acting monologues should show them that. Do not think: what hand gesture or facial expression would I make when delivering this line, think of what your character (who is a completely different person than yourself) would do.

Some Western Philosophers Believe Human Thought is Divided into Only 3-Categories

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Auguste Comte, the famous philosopher of the mid-1800s stated that he believed that human thought could be classified into three categories Religious, Philosophical, and Scientific. Later Western philosophers debated this and thought that it was much too simplistic to try to divide all human thoughts into only three categories.

For instance, one might wish to ask about the following other types of human thought such as;

What about “No Thought”? What about thinking about making a toast for breakfast out of habit? What about habit, void of thought? What about reflex, No Thought? (you chose at one time to train your muscles to act) What if someone has no faith in animal, vegetable or mineral or god? What about strategic thinking?(I suppose you have faith the sun will come up in the morning? Would this mean anything you plan the next day applies to religion?)

Semantics? Or does one of these apply?

If we classify the categories further as per Comte; Religious knowing prioritizes “faith″; philosophical knowing prioritizes “reasons”; and scientific knowing prioritizes “evidence.”

Then the case seems air-tight, but is it? Habits, strategic thinking and the thoughts of a human baby are all very hard to classify within philosopher Auguste Comte’s categories. Some would argue that you cannot have a five-day would not fall into one of these three categories based on this further clarification of the definition. But would they be correct in making that statement?

Some agree and others do not. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple; to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.
