Say Something

Friday, February 29th, 2008

The music of Rush influences and inspires, at least that’s what it’s done
for me over the past 25 years. Now, the question is, is the music that
powerful, or am I just too easy to inspire? Both I guess.

When something really hits me I tend to pay attention to it, like a smack
in the face. It’s tough to ignore something that’s truly eye-opening. I pay
attention to things that open my eyes, things that make me think and
feel, like music. When I listen to Rush sometimes I laugh because of
their comical aspects, sometimes I cry because of the impact of certain
phrases or melodies, or indeed the combination thereof. I’m also often
floored by the power of the music, and the sheer talent that created it.

The music of Rush can be incredibly gentle, and touching, stuff I would
play for mom, unlike my old AC/DC or Ozzy Ozbourne (there’s a story for
another day), though I’m sure she has heard them vibrating the walls of
my room one time or another. Rush also makes great wall-rattling tunes
that you just have to crank up, songs with drive and power that make
you want to play dashboard drums while you cruising along the
highway. I’m a frequent dashboard drummer, though I can scarcely keep
up with Neil Peart’s double bass thumping — my gas pedal gets in the
way.

Sorry about that, back to my initial thought…

I feel many emotions when I listen to music, whether it’s Rush, Peter
Gabriel, James Taylor, Coldplay or a host of other great musicians and
bands. The fact is, music inspires. A great song puts on its gloves and
gives you a good one two punch.

Okay, some great songs just have a good grove, or catchy chorus, but
when you’re listening to not-top-40 music like Rush, stuff that’s not at all
heard on mainstream commercial radio, you’re listening to a band that’s
made it as far as they have because of their influence and talent. Their
fans love them because of what they say, what they play, and how they
play and say it. Don’t trip there.

I can’t imagine what my life would be like without some of these great
musicians and writers. And while their music inspires greatly, we must
understand that they′re still human, and humans make mistakes. Do as I
say, not as I do. :)

When something hits me, I look to see what it was. How often do you
feel an impact? I guess that’s why I write and record music as well,
because I’d like to influence people the way I’ve been influenced,
positively. I have stuff to say, do you? Say it. If we say enough good
things, we won’t have to worry about what the papers say when we
make a mistake, the people we’ve influenced won’t dwell on it.

I was hit by the Bob Marley song “Could you be loved” that ends with the
repeated phrase “Say something… say something…say something..”

Great song. Great idea.

Child Music Education

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Music is a great teacher and healer, too. Ever since human civilization evolved, music has been an integral part of life. Through music many things can be achieved.

Music is present in all walks of life on all occasions. Lullabies, birthday songs, wedding songs, religious prayers, solemn occasions like mourning, national anthems, etc.- there is a song for every occasion.

So, from birth till last breath, there is music present everywhere. Befitting to this, child music education is an important field. This simply means teaching music to children from a young age, the sooner the better. Children must be encouraged to develop hobbies.

Hobbies will improve children?s creativity, talents, intelligence, attitude and aptitude.

Among other hobbies, music is especially useful in developing these qualities in children. Parents need to encourage the talents latent in their children and help them to develop and utilize them.

Research has proved that music education has an almost astonishing effect, especially on children. Their young minds are ever-receptive and it is our duty to pass on the right message to them. Not only that, as elders, we need to cultivate culture among the children of today, who will be the citizens of tomorrow.

Music education develops self-confidence and a positive attitude in kids, so they can excel in school, life, their social circle and the society at large. Teenage violence, aggression, depression, psychic problems ? all these can be remarkably controlled and reduced through music education.

It is high time that conscientious efforts are made to recognize not only the melody of music, but also its intrinsic value in refining and fine-tuning our children?s character. In other words, music education should be included as a regular course of study, rather than being optional.

I’m Making a List and Checking It Twice - My Favorite Songs

Friday, February 29th, 2008

In the movie High Fidelity, John Cusack says, “Which came first - the music or the misery? Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?” Personally, I like pop music and all kinds of music. I really enjoy listening to music with friends. I’m not miserable at all.

Some of my friends like pop music. Some don’t. Some like country-western music. Some hate it. Some like classic rock. Some don’t. Personally, I appreciate all kinds of music. I may not like some writers or performers, but in almost all genres, there are songs I like.

In the mid-1980s, my wife and I joined forces with some friends and ran a small dance club, The Bedrock Lounge. For a while it was the place to go . . . until we had liquor board problems. We mostly played alternative rock and dance mixes. On the weekends we brought in live bands. Peg and I listened to a wide variety of music. I played records through the evening and into the early morning hours. She knit, read, and worked on her calligraphy. From pop to classics and show tunes, we’ll listen.

Every time someone mentions a musical I like, I generally say, “Oh, that’s one of my favorites.” I don′t really have a list of favorites, but perhaps I should write one down. Like Cusack, again, in High Fidelity says, “What really matters is what you like, not what you’re like.”

When I attend a musical with my wife, we always buy the cast album if possible. If you are familiar with particular Broadway musicals you can experience the entire play just by listening to the music. In your mind you can see the characters, hear their lines and watch their actions. In reality you are just listening to the songs performed on stage, but the human mind tends to fill in the blanks.

I love live performances. If I have seen a performer live AND have their music on a CD I’m in heaven. If I have CDs of a favorite singer and haven’t seen them live, I search on the internet for their concert dates. And sometimes I just fall into the right situation.

A friend attended a performance of Judy Collins at The Triple Door in Seattle, a small 300 seat dinner and music venue. I asked him to bring back a calendar of upcoming events. After the concert he just told me the website address of The Triple Door and I went there to look around. To my surprise I found out that Guy Clark was appearing just a week and a half later.

Peg and I once attended a Nanci Griffith concert and expected to see Guy Clark open for her. To our dismay, he didn’t make the trip. Since that time we have purchased several of his CDs, however. Two days later I was invited to join friends for a performance of Romeo and Juliette in Olympia. I declined, but mentioned that we were going to see Guy Clark just a few days later.

Guy Clark was wonderful. We had a decent dinner, enjoyed Rachel Harrington, his opening act, and saw him live with our Olympia friends. Good food, good music, and good friends. There was no misery to mix in with our listening pleasure.

The Aries sun sign person is always ready, willing, and able to fall in love.

The Taurus sun sign person is never willing to share their chocolates.

The Gemini sun sign person typically may have several valentines to shop for.

The Cancer sun sign person prepares for this special day in advance so it is filled with cards, a homemade dinner, a movie, and a big box of chocolate.

The Leo sun sign person waits intentionally for this day so they can make a big valentines splash with big ticket gifts.

The Virgo sun sign person is the only sign of the zodiac that will let you get away with missing valentines day–but usually keeps the rain check weekend free.

The Libra sun sign person will very usually get everything they want.

Th Scorpio sun sign person wants the kind of gifts they can’t show to their mother.

The Sagittarius sun sign person likes to make plans to spend Valentines day somewhere far and away.

When to quit

Before you decide if you are going to play in online casinos or going to a casino, there’s something you need to think about if you want to be successful. MONEY, if you don’t know how much money you are willing to spend you might win but you might end up losing more than what you should. Make sure you decide how much money you want to play and stick with that, avoid going to an ATM or to try to use more money to recoup your losses.

After you have in mind how much money you are going to spend then you need to divide that amount of money with the days you are planning to play. Don’t use more money that you planned per day. Having that in mind then you should go and play. If you need some tips about slot machine you can go to online casinos articles and find some articles.

WHEN TO QUIT?

That’s a good question. If you don′t know when to quit you are going to end up losing money. You need to know that you should never quit while you are winning.

First, you need to know what it’s your betting limit, the next step is to read the playing rules for each games.

NEVER QUIT WHILE YOU ARE WINNING, QUIT WHILE YOU ARE AHEAD.

Never try to recoup losses by increasing your bet size.

Quit when you reach your loss limit

Quit when you are not happy with the dealers

Don’t play with money that you can’t afford to loose.

Don’t try to chase your losses.

When you drink too much

If you can’t have a money discipline, you should try to find some help and QUIT playing.

Get That Sunset

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Everyone loves a good sunset image. They can appear a bit hackneyed after a while, but a great sunset photo will always appeal to everyone that sees it. It reminds us of this earth and the wonders of nature and the natural world. In this age of digital this and digital that, it is even more important to escape to a world of tranquillity, peace and harmony.

The photographer can enhance this feeling of serenity with his or her images. Use you camera to the best effect. Think about the image you are trying to capture and compose it just as you would any other image. Be sure to use the rule of thirds especially when there is a horizon. The join between the sea (or land) and the sky should, ideally, be one third of the way down the image. This gives a balance which is hard to rationalise but which the eye and the brain likes best.

The next thing to consider is turning off the automatic white balance. Leaving the white balance to the digital camera will produce washed out yellows and reds because the camera sees an abundance of reds, oranges and yellows and thinks it is too much. Turn off automatic white balance and you will get richer fuller tones and hues.

Take some time with the set up and the exposure. You don’t want to have an underexposed image so don’t meter off the sun itself, but perhaps, just to one side. In lower light, use a tripod.

But hurry – sunsets don’t last that long, and the view changes quickly and dramatically as the sun is being lost from the sky

Learning To Speak Thai

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

The main problem with learning to speak Thai is that the basis of the language is not European-based. English and the other Euro languages have Latin, Greek, Viking, etc., roots Thai does not, so you have to memorize hundreds, if not thousands, of strange and unrelated sounds. This is difficult, unless you use some sort of memory trigger.

Speak Easy Thai is a low-cost (about US$25) CD-ROM that helps solve this problem by presenting a picture and a sound file; all words are spoken by a native Thai speaker, so you hear the correct tone.

If you see a Thai word printed in a book, such as a travel guide, chances are you will not remember the word because there is nothing to hang your hat on.

But when you see a picture of something and hear it spoken properly in Thai, your brain will find it much easier to remember the word because it seems to set up more associations (hypertext links, if you will) in your brain.

It’s a fact that most people learn better visually and aurally than they do by simply reading and trying to memorize. This is, in fact, how children learn. They hear the words spoken by adults and other children, and repeat them. Young children learn to speak a language well before they can read.

Thai uses its own alphabet, rather than pictograms like Chinese, which makes it much easier to learn than Chinese. You just have to get over the hump of reading the Thai characters. The alphabet contains the same letters as English, but they are drawn differently. For example, all the common consonants and vowels exist in Thai, but a Thai G (or P or M) does not look like an English G (or P or M).

But the best part of learning Thai is the grammar, believe it or not, because there is very little to learn. There are no, absolutely NO verb conjugations, which will please anyone who has ever tried to learn one of the Latin-based languages like French, Italian, and Spanish. Future tense is handled with “ja”, meaning “will”, or by adding an adverb of time, like “tomorrow″. Past tense is handled by putting “already” at the end, or by adding an adverb of time, like “yesterday”. For example, instead of saying, “I went to the market”, you use the present tense (”go”) but add “already” at the end, as in “I go market already”. Easy peasy.

Also, adjectives do not change form, you don’t have to worry about the sex of a noun because all nouns are neuter. Adjectives always follow the noun, without exception; you say “house big” rather than “big house”.

General plurals are done by doubling the noun: “house house″ instead of “houses”. Specific plurals use the same construction we use in English for groups, as in “The farmer has three head of cattle″. You can’t say “I have three children” in Thai, you must say “I have child three person”; “child” is the noun, “person” is the group word, also known as a “classifier”.

Adverbs are easy too, no variations. You can add emphasis by doubling the adverb: “He runs quickly quickly″.

The most difficult part of learning Thai is that it is a tonal language. English uses tones on sentences. Compare these three statements:

“You’re going to the party.”

“You’re going to the party?”

“You’re going to the party!”

They all use the same English words, but the tone (flat, rising, falling, respectively) gives an entirely different meaning to each sentence.

Thai uses tones on words, but not on sentences. For example, “seu-ah” spoken with a flat (mid-range) tone means “clothing”; “seu-ah” spoken with a rising tone means “tiger″. So you must be careful to learn the correct tone for each word, otherwise you might be saying “my tiger is dirty” when what you meant is “my clothing is dirty”. There is no doubt that this is the hardest part of learning Thai, and the only way to learn the correct tone is to listen to a native Thai speaker saying the word.

The West Wing (Season 2) DVD Review

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Premiering in September 1999, the original NBC series The West Wing built an instant cult following with its seemingly realistic weekly excursions into the inner sanctums of the White House. The series became such a hit that some pollsters claimed that certain people actually believed Jed Bartlet was the real president (although, if true, this is more of a negative reflection on the intelligence of the electorate, and not necessarily an indication of West Wing’s realism). But regardless, the truth of the matter is that West Wing definitely strikes a chord with certain audiences, providing entertaining brew of action, suspense, and drama on a weekly basis…

Seasoned Hollywood actor Martin Sheen plays the lead role of President Jed Bartlet. The day-to-day affairs of Bartlet’s administration are run by a number of individuals who surround him, among them are: Claudia “C.J.” Cregg (Allison Janney), Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Leo McGarry (John Spencer), and Charlie Young (Dule Hill). West Wing follows these dedicated staffers as they work extended hours behind-the-scenes to help keep the White House running smoothly. Along the way, the stress of the job and the characters’ personal lives make for an interesting glimpse into what many believe is an accurate portrayal of a real-life White House administration…

The West Wing (Season 2) DVD offers a number of dramatic episodes including the season premiere “In the Shadow of Two Gunmen: Part 1″ in which the staff awaits news relating to the gunshot wounds suffered by Josh Lyman and President Bartlett, prompting them to reminisce about their initial involvement in Bartlet’s campaign and how they all came to know each other. Meanwhile, Leo, Toby, and C.J. examine the formal inquiry into the Secret Service’s policies as well as the legal implications of Bartlet’s surgery and the transfer of his executive power… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “In This White House” in which the White House staffers host a contingent of pharmaceutical executives and leaders from Africans nations in relation to ending the AIDS crisis, and “The Leadership Breakfast” in which the staffers participate in a bi-partisan breakfast which they hope will actually substantively tackle an issue…

Below is a list of episodes included on The West Wing (Season 2) DVD:

From “the dark” comes Light

Devitt Brown, known professionally as “the dark,” was anything but last evening at the opening of his unique and curious work presented by the Elliott Louis Gallery in the courtyard of the Arthur Erickson-designed Waterfall building. It was a fitting location for this former graffiti artist who has lived on the street and uses abandoned buildings and other urban detritus as a common subject for his palette.

This elegantly poised young man stood tall and quietly dignified in his tuxedo, rented for his coming-out. This begged the question, posed from one of the many admirers who had gathered in celebration of this popular graffitist, “where was his art before his first stencil upon the city’s streets?

The answer is a telling one, and where I choose to start my story of the evening and this emerging talent on the Vancouver art scene.

“Binder-art in high-school,” was “the dark’s” reply. Grenville Christian College, as it turns out. I was curious about this because of his manner, which was impeccable, and his deportment, equally so. All the hype about graffiti and living on the streets seemed incongruous with the elegance of his demeanour.

The Grenville Christian College is an elementary, middle and upper grade school in Brockville, Ontario. The school’s mission is, “to care for their students; treat them with respect, and to encourage them to grow into caring, respectful, well-educated adults.” They aim to educate young students academically, physically and spiritually, within a family environment, teaching personal responsibility and the value of excellence.

All of these qualities were readily apparent in “the dark,” lending evidence that, by all appearances, they had accomplished their objectives with this former student.

The school motto: Copiosa Apud Eum Redemptio (In Him is Plenteous Redemption), lends a colourful theme to the recent trajectory of “the dark’s” young life; from graffiti-inspired street urchin to the welcome arms of one of Vancouver’s pre-eminent art galleries.

The epic pieces previewed on the gallery walls at his opening show, some as large as nine by twelve feet, were in direct contrast to the notion of the binder-art that was the start of this unschooled artist. The fact that he has been so well-schooled in social graces will stand him in good stead as his career will so inevitably lead him to more and greater successes.

My fifteen year-old daughter, who was fully informed about “the dark,” jumped at the opportunity to see one of her hero’s work and was my escort as well as a great source of knowledge for the evening.

She asked, “How did you end up here from there?” He got it – I didn’t. His reply was, “those three pieces over there,” referring to three enormous works lining the gallery walls. “Mr. Lederer, [the ever-gracious gallery owner Ted Lederer], came into my studio and liked them.” And well he should have.

Primarily using intricately manipulated stencils, sometimes as many as fifteen, aerosols are applied to canvas, acrylics to panels - in many layers. The overall tone is a sombre one. The subject matter, sometimes as mundane as a back alley, nonetheless provokes the eye to appreciate the vision for its simplicity and stark realism. Not sure at first, whether you are looking at a photograph, upon closer inspection one sees the work of the stencils at play.

It is a unique and labour-intensive art form and this young street artist has no doubt had many an urban slate to perfect his craft upon. Far from any egalitarian assertion common to graffiti, “the dark” offers that he “tries to represent reality through his work.” It is not abstruse. It is simply, what it is.

Shown in its entirety, “the dark’s” collection of work definitively and, in the positive, answers the question, “yes, but is it art?”

“The Dark” Dystopia is at the Elliott Louis Gallery January 11 through January 28.

A Crazy Night in Vegas

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

It was a Sunday afternoon. My friend Kurt and I met for lunch. We kept talking about our upcoming trip to Vegas. We were scheduled to leave that Thursday and return 3 days later.

“This food tastes like **** and this service is horrible.” said Kurt. “Just wait for Vegas baby, lobster and prime rib every night!!”

Kurt had the entire week off. And I have all the time in the world. Online Poker as a profession allows me to set my own hours!

“Lets rent a car and drive down there right now. We can drop the car off in Vegas and catch our return flight back!” I said. After a confused look Kurt said “OK lets do it″. And it was done! Until will did some research and found it cheaper to fly. We caught a flight and arrived in Vegas around 7pm.

“This is insane, a week in Vegas, we are going to die of alcohol poisoning and lose our houses!… Yeah cool”

After renting a car- a Chrysler 300 and checking into our hote-l the Venetian we were ready to go. The first amazing event of the night was our room at the Venetian. It was our first time there. Kurt opened the door, his mouth dropped and he said ” ohh my…. HOLY ****, this room is insane.” Off to the left was the bathroom. It was filled with gold fixtures, double sink, vanity, separate shower, marble floors and Jacuzzi tub. Off the bathroom was a separate room for the toilet complete with private phone. Kurt said ” Forward my calls to the poop room, I got to drop the kids off at the pool!!” Proceeding to the bedroom, two beds with fine bedding a valance and log pillows, and a TV. The room was huge, with artwork and gold accents. Continuing past the beds to the sunken living room. Couches, chairs, a table, fax machine and additional TV and this was a standard room! Kurt flipped on the TV. And to our surprise the porn channel was on. “Holy crap free porn” And it was paid for our entire week there! Maybe a glitch we never found out!

After leaving our room we got in the 300 and headed to Uncle Albert’s Steakhouse. Might as well eat big before we go broke. Kurt selected a plump lobster from the tank and I had a filet. It was about 4 inches thick and cooked to perfection. I don’t remember for sure but I think that is when the drinking started. A few beers. Lead to a few more.

After Uncle Al’s we headed over to the fricken lodge. (Bellagio) A tradition of ours. We go to the fricken lodge to bet on the fricken horses. They have the best sports book in the world at the lodge. We valet the car and walk in the front door. Leather swivel chairs and private flat screen TVs. And you can bet 2 bucks a race if you want. Or you can bet on one race and drink free fricken drinks all night long! And that is what we did. Kurt was drinking Heineken and I was drinking captain and coke. Tip the cocktail waitress and she will get you drunk as you want!

After the lodge while waiting for the valet to return our 300 Kurt decided to run after a pigeon and kick it. He really nailed that sucker. I asked him what was wrong with him. He said “Pigeons are just rats with wings, I hate F***ING pigeons”. “Wow I didn’t know you had such anger towards them” We started laughing; he asked me if I hated them too. I told him I don’t have an opinion either way. “Go kick it again so I can take a picture.” He ran after it and nailed it again. I got a great picture on my phone too. We were so drunk.

After the pigeon-kicking incident we headed downtown to drink some more and play some fricken “Worlds Most Liberal 21” at the Vegas club. Another tradition. You can double down with 3 cards if you want. Only in Vegas baby. After several hands and more drinks we headed to the Ghost Bar. While leaving the parking garage Kurt decided to test the emergency break. The only problem was he wasn’t driving, I was. He scared the crap out of me. He yelled “EMERGENCY” and pulled the E-break. The car came screeching to a halt nearly crashing into the wall of the parking garage. Most people would have seen how dangerous and stupid this was, but not us. It was unfortunate that this discovery had to happen on the first day. I can’t count how many “EMERGENCIES” we had that week. We nearly rolled over on the freeway.

The ghost bar was crazy. We drank ourselves to a stupor. We literally stumbled out to the car. We ended up leaving the car at the Palms and taking a taxi back to the Vegas Club for breakfast. $2.99 steak, eggs and hash browns. Kurt was so obnoxious while we waited for our food. “Where the hell are my eggs? Why are we eating at this ****hole? He then asked the waiter if he spit in our food. “I told him no but he will now you *****” Kurt put his head down and passed out. I said why don’t you sleep on the floor. He lay down on the floor of the diner. The waiter said, “Sir get up, you have to get off the floor”. Kurt just lay there I thought he was dead. I couldn’t stop laughing. We got booted out of there with empty stomachs!
We headed back to the room. We ordered room service. Burgers and fries. While I was placing the phone order Kurt kept yelling “ HOMO ordering room service” The lady on the phone was cracking up. I awoke a half hour later and let the room service bring in the cart. Kurt was laid out on the floor. I had to literally kick him to get him out of the way to let the cart get through the door.

He was so drunk. He got up looked at me straight in the eyes and said “Where are you?” “Where are you?” I started laughing. “I’m Here ***hole, now eat your F-ING burger. He picked it up and threw it at me.

“You dumbs**** “ I said, “You just throw a $25 burger at me.” I yelled “ Have some F**** tomatoes and I proceeded to throw a tomato at him. He picked up his plate and pathetically threw the entire thing at me. It missed me by like five feet and splattered all over the curtains.
“You pigeon kicking bitch, I spent the next hour throwing up, while Kurt fell asleep to some quality adult programming. We woke up the next day at noon with food and vomit all over our beautiful room.
