Philosophy, Politics and Physics - What Do They Have In Common

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Perhaps you do not realize but the most brilliant mines of the planet such those who ponder theoretical physics are not generally stuck in linear thought. How can they be if they are to think thru space and time? What is fascinating is that these folks often have ideas and concepts spanning such fields as Human Biosystem, Economics, Philosophy, History, Politics, Psychology, Engineering or even Anthropology.

As the operator of an Online Think Tank it is something that I have come to expect of certain types of minds. Often when a theoretical physicist tells me that they have an idea about Philosophy and Politics I immediately reply; So, tell me more about your ideas on Philosophy and Politics.

Generally they say that their ideas and concepts have gone unnoticed since they are not specialists in those domains, yet their ideas are noteworthy indeed. Well I suppose that is a common problem of Renaissance Men, which generally these folks seem to be from their diverse interests, studies and thoughts.

Nevertheless I would not worry to much about this dilemma is you are both a specialist and generalist both, as most other folks of intelligence have trapped themselves into linear thoughts of their ever so tightened scientific domain. Indeed, some of the greatest innovations of mankind come from the generalists who also have a couple of narrow domain focuses in which to use to cross the divides and barriers set up in the others.

So, perhaps you will forgive those humans who do not see what you and I also see. After all they are still in the box or cave watching the flickerings on the wall and wonder what on Earth they are in their finite cranial capacity, which is so small? I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought. The goal is simple to help you in your quest to be the best in 2007. I thank you for reading my many articles on diverse subjects, which interest you.

The Shape of Things - What to Leave in, What to Take Out

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Shape gives your mind something to relate to. Similar shapes form patterns. Dissimilar shapes draw attention. Imagine if you will a long row of small rubber balls, placed together in a semi circle. The roundness of the ball reinforces the curve of the semi circle. Seeing the roundness causes a familiarity in the image, in other words, it creates a pattern that your eye wants to follow. On the other hand, picture that same long row of balls with a small square block in line about two thirds of the way back. Your eye may still follow the row of balls, but it will stop and look longer at the square. That’s not because the square itself is more interesting, but just because it’s different.

This process of forcing a viewer to stop and look again is commonly known as creating a “Spot”. A “Spot” does not have to be formed by a different shape. It could be a different color, texture, or size. Most often it’s something that is totally different, like a rose in a field full of daises. Being aware of the shapes that make up your photograph is similar to being aware of lines. Shapes can be obvious or not so obvious. They can be real, or implied.

When my wife and I were engaged we had a friend take some pictures of us for the wedding announcement. We went to a local park and found a nice interesting big rock to sit on. When our friend took the shots, she was not aware of the shapes in the background. In the distance there was a street lamp. The way the shot was taken the lamp pole was not in the shot, but the lamp part itself was. To this day, we still have friends that say: “Remember that UFO that was in the background of your announcement pictures?”

Shape adds feeling to the unemotional canvas of a photograph. Edward Weston understood this concept better than most. His study of bell peppers and sea shells lead to some of the most artistic nudes in history. If you want to comprehend shape, study shape, and observe shape in its truest form, look at the pictures of Edward Weston. (1886-1958)

When some photographers seem to take forever to arrange a group of people, what is it they’re looking for? More than likely, it has to do with shapes. Three people standing in a straight line is boring. Move one of them up or down and suddenly you′ve formed a triangle. Take a shot with two couples directly behind each other and visually you have a square. Take a moment to have one person go high and one go low and now the two couple form a diamond. Which one do you think would be more interesting? Take a look at any portrait studio shots and rarely, if ever, will you see people arranged in just a straight line.

Obviously not all shapes have the same impact. Circles and Triangles tend to grab your attention. Squares and Rectangles on the other hand tend to blend in. Combining shapes is often what makes the difference between a great shot and a boring one. Shape often goes hand in hand with texture. The roundness of the female form is usually more pleasing to look at than say the coldness of the long rectangular steel beam. If you are into construction, feel free to disagree with me.

Sometimes shapes are formed by the lack of something; this is often referred to as: “Negative Space”. Positive space is simple. That’s your subject, usually in the foreground. But negative space on the other hand, is what most people are not aware of. Remember the shape of a UFO in the background? Sometimes colors or shapes that are totally opposite of everything in the Positive space, leaves the viewer confused. You might even be saying to yourself, “Something is just not right.” When in doubt,
start looking at your negative space. The bright round shape between subjects may actually be pulling your eyes away from the main subject itself. This is a classic example of negative space.

Lastly, don’t forget that where you place the shape also matters. If you are taking a family portrait for example and the father is huge (round or tall) you don’t want to put him right in the middle up front.
Why? People will have a hard time looking at anyone else in the shot, if his shape dominates the picture. Place him behind someone else, or have him kneeling so he doesn’t tower over everyone else. Like many elements of design, Shapes can help the images or hurt them. Being aware of shapes can make all the difference in the world.

Casino Food 101

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Over the years, the various gambling games and the gambling joints or the casinos have undergone a change, making the experience riskier, adventurous and unique in itself. An often overlooked, but yet important component in the entire casino experience is the food. The casino towns have a variety of buffets and joints to offer to its tourist population. Cities like Las Vegas, Atlantic and Monte Carlo are revolutionizing their food regime.

Las Vegas, the God of all gambling cities has moved from being just a casino city to has now become a complete recreational hub. The city’s primary focus for ages had on casinos. Incidentally, it left out the entire food experience. Consequently, it lost many of its tourists who were non serious gamblers. Investors and casino owners have now realized that with state lotteries and Indian casinos soon catching up, they need to diversify. Many resorts and casinos have now come up which promise a complete holiday. If this is not enough, restaurants with celebrity chefs coming from all over the world have a wide range of cuisines to offer. While Caesar’s Palace now has two dozen restaurants, Bellagio has the one of the best cuisines of the place. Numerous other dining joints offer a mix of various cuisines, like the Olives which has exotic Mediterranean – American dishes on its menu.

Vegas also has the famous Emeril Lagasse’s restaurants. The renowned chef, who has an entire range of cooking accessories attributed to him, opened the New Orlean’s Fish House in the MGM Grand Hotel. The menu chiefly comprises of sea food. Delmonico’s Steakhouse, another grand experience is well known for its bar and cigar collection. This Lagasse brainwave specializes in steaks.

Wolfgang Puck is another brand name in food design. Spago, a chain of hotels opened by Puck started business in Vegas in 1992. This famous chain is the Synonym of wealth and style. Situated in the Caesar’s Palace, this hotel offers both, light dishes and dinner. The menu includes oven pizzas and pastas. Postrio another one of Puck establishments offer the New American menu. The list comprises of fish and other sea food dishes. It also has a good wine collection. Other Puck restaurants in Vegas include Lupo and Chinois.

A factor that perhaps forced Atlantic City to catch up with the ‘new casino experience’ was its geographic location. New York and Connecticut have both seen an escalation in the number of casinos in the past years. This in turn has forced many gamblers to stay home and visit these weekend joints. The first step in the evolution of the Atlantic City’s casino front was the opening of a casino cum resort in 2003. The sea food buffets in the Atlantic are similar to those found in the Vegas. The Caesar’s Palace is the venue of a number of award winning restaurants of the place. Some of them include the Primavera, which is hugely dominated by the Italian Cuisine, Bacchanal which is a mini Rome, and Nero’s Grill , a famous steak and seas food restaurant.

Monte Carlo is situated between France and Italy, along the French Riviera. The city is a luxury niche which advertises its luxurious gambling experience. It boast various villas and secluded beaches, providing ultimate European comfort. Louis XV, a name that stands for wealth, royalty and prestige is an exclusive dining experience. The menu comprises of fish and local vegetables cooked in French style. Le Grill, another restaurant, popular for its Mediterranean view has grilled sea food on its food list.

For years, the gambling destinations have offered cheap sea food and buffets for the serious gamblers who visit these cities. The new resort concept, complete with its multi cuisine dining rooms, now promise to offer something more than just slot machines.

Strategies of Online Casino Gambling

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Since the advent of casino gambling and its widespread popularity I’ve been playing online casino gambling. I also had some good and some bad experiences with online casino gambling. I cannot ever forget those great sessions in which everything happened the way I desired.

Hope you could understand the kind of game I am talking about In which the dealer is busting left and right, I have to draw five-card 21s, and the number of credits in my account just keeps on accumulating. As everyone says that ups and downs are part of the game hence I also had horrible sessions where the opposite happened and nothing happened as I desired. The key to long-term success in online casino gambling is to try to smooth out the peaks and valleys in order to gain some consistency. This is where a good betting system comes into play.

Anyone before going for online casino gambling must arm himself with a good strategy. Most of the gamblers immediately consider any betting system as useless before they could understand the way the game is played. Online casino gambling is different from traditional ways of casino gaming. For instance, many websites offer slightly better odds and free credits to induce you to play for more money. In games such as blackjack and Jacks or Better video poker even the smallest variation in odds will change the basic playing strategies and actions. I would like to suggest that even if any website is giving credits to play casino games the player must not try to play for more than his worth to gain the money he has lost. To win in an online casino games you must put all your experience and skills of blackjack, slots, roulette etc. and learn a new strategy of playing games.

To develop a good strategy of online casino gambling one must either be a PhD in mathematics or he will have to work for hundreds and thousands of hours of simulations of the same type of games. One of the main advantage is that are many math and computer experts who sell their automated wizards to learn to win those games like blackjack etc. available to play online. But to out surprise they never use those wizards themselves to win money at online casinos, rather only sell them and this shows how reliable those wizards are. There’s no real way by which we can verify the claims about someone’s system without actually purchasing the strategy and reading through it first.

You could come across some of the choice strategy guides in the market to teach one of the best strategies. Most of the people have earned a fairly steady income from online casino gambling using these strategies. You will have to search for the perfect strategy and the best place to start your intensive research would be forums where gamblers usually gather. You can easily find the best alternative as at least one member of the forum has tested a particular strategy guide so you could easily evaluate best alternative by listening to their alternative methods.

No strategy can eliminate the risk involved in online casino gambling. With the proper strategy of gambling, you can only reduce your risk to a fraction of a percent and cannot eliminate it. But an effective strategy could give you an edge over the house. The best policy to win in your next casino game is to start researching strategy guides and evaluate the best one.

The Definition of “Insanity” - Doing What You Always Do - And Expecting A Different Result

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Seeking coaching or counseling is often the last thing people try before they give up. It’s the last attempt because most people repeat the ineffective solutions they’ve tried before (hoping that “this time it will work”), or they try to change the components of the problem (which solves the problem, in a way) or they give up and ignore the issue hoping time will make it disappear. Finally if a problem persists after these solutions, maybe (just maybe) the brave-hearted seek outside assistance.

The flaw in the process is that a person cannot envision an issue differently without additional or new input. Suppose you thought a flower was “magenta”…the experience of the color of the flower would become the definition of the color for you. Without new input (or a new way of looking at the flower–or a method of defining the color more precisely), the flower will always be “magenta” to you–because you think so.

This same sort of logic applies when a person perceives a challenge or problem. Without a new perspective to suggest a new way of looking at the issue, a person has only his own belief upon which to rely. It doesn’t matter if the belief is self-imposed or if it was gleaned unconsciously or injected by family influences. Whatever you believe, you cannot change that belief or thought without some new frame of reference, some new information or a personal experience that disputes the belief.

Here is where “insanity” is comes in: People often approach coaching or counseling with the thought that the helper is going to support their belief. Why-ever would a person intentionally seek out an opposing opinion? Often the problem or challenge persists with even greater force as its supporter defends his action with “I’ve always done it that way”. Or maybe the complaint will be, “I don′t think I can do THAT–it’s not like me″. And then (unless the coach or counselor is VERY skillful) people leave the session feeling misunderstood and less capable than when they arrived.

This suggests that despite an appointment with a helper or a visit with a friend, most people still want to do the same thing that they are comfortable doing (sometimes with minor variations) and then they hope that something will turn out differently. [That's just "insane".]

Now, in this article “insanity” is not a therapeutic term. Persons who truly have mental health issues have a harder time changing their behaviors and thinking than regular, plain-ol’ people. However, most people can relate to feeling pressed to behave in a particular way or react in a habitual manner to circumstances that “make them crazy”.

So, here is an idea: do something different! Get some new information from a new source. Don’t act on it without some careful consideration–but collect the data, make a plan and experiment.

1) Be a scientist: list the issues and options and describe the problem or issue in DETAIL–include as much information as you can, including who, what, where, what happens and what happens next.

2) Then do your research: ask others what they would do (not what YOU should do). Be picky about choosing who to ask–select ONLY people you respect and that you know care about you. Thank them for their input and tell them that you’re on a “research mission″ to find out as much as you can.

3) Compare and contrast the information you’ve received. Make a chart. Put ( ) or (-) next to the ideas. But don’t act on it yet. Let it mull in your mind for a while.

4) Revisit your list and write down the likely outcome for each of the options or solutions–be specific. Include the effect of your action on everyone involved. Also, weigh your own suspicions about how you’ll feel if the reactions you suspect were to come to pass.

5) Finally, pick your best option that is most likely to get the result you want–and do it.

This approach reminds us that without outside input or new information, we are not actually making a new decision. Instead, we’re just attending to the same issue or problem in the same way we always have.

Oops–there’s that pesky definition of “insanity″–do the same thing and expect a different result. So, be brave, think outside the box, research, imagine, be creative and smart. Put conscious intention on the task and then do something differently that you’ve carefully considered as a viable solution. It might not work just the way you think. But it will likely make a change: the issue or problem might be amended into a more manageable concern. And, you’ll always have a new and creative “Plan 2″ as a back-up.

Judy Armes is Relationship Coach working primarily with “grown-up” singles struggling with the changing times. The problem-solving techniques in this article will work for many issues–but they are especially useful for folks who are trying to find a new way of relating and establishing satisfying adult relationships. A “new thing” to try is at matchmadeinheaven2007.com/ matchmadeinheaven2007.com/ It suggests looking in before looking out might be a useful first step in applying new notions to an old idea.

Deadly Horoscopes

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Do you believe in them? Everyday millions of us flock to the shops. Why? Horoscopes! People sincerely believe that horoscopes are true and they live their lives based on the insanity that is being preached by everyday people, just like you and me. That’s right! They’re written by people just like you and me. You didn’t actually believe they’re written by specially gifted people did ya? Hmmm….

The shocking facts of it makes me sick really. The only real reason horoscopes are written is to make that writer a lot of money.

In fact! I bet that while that writer is writing those horoscopes he is sitting there laughing and thinking how much of a fool you are to believe the gibberish he mockingly mutters!

The plain and simple fact is, you give yourself into these people and in doing that allow them to control you. By believing the things they say you allow them to make you feel as powerful or as volunarable as they want. So… You want some crazy man or woman controlling your life with a pen while sitting in his living room do ya!

I think too often people misunderstand the real point of media. It is all about making money, and while some people within the industry still think about you the consumer it is not very often that cash isn’t the main aim of the never ending media game.

Hey, wanna know something? People even go as far as choosing there love by their star sign. Now just imagine…
A date with Britney Spears! Yes we’re setting one lucky guy up with the Brit!
For the ladies its none other than The Brad man yep Brad Pitt! Hold on just a sec!
Whats your star sign? If your not virgo you can’t get the date with Britney and if you ain’t Gemini you can’t get within a hundred yards of Brad!

Wow! That felt good. I was winding you up there for a second wasn’t i? This is exactly the kinda thing a horoscope writer does. Okay maybe it isn’t as obvious as I made it seem but that doesn’t matter. The point is it has the same effect.

So is this the kinda life you want to live? Life is a complicated thing and with the level of psychology in use today, life can get even more complicated. Don’t let them fool you!

My name is Courtney, 17 and attending college. I honestly don’t like writing anything if it isn’t a language like php or java. My english teacher thought this was a problem and told me to try writing some articles and submitting them to ezines. I′m a freidnly person and really keen but easily annoyed. I enjoy nothing but learning new things about computers and different languages.

This is how my friends and I started gvsmedia.com www.gvsmedia.com just in January of 07. Well I’ve gotta get English even though my grades are all Cs to A* my teacher says it might be a problem so hey why not nip it in the bud. I intend to get tons of articles done, well depending on how people react to my first one. If they hate it I might go just stick to programming if I see a little bit of love I’ll get some more out asap. As far as my life is concerned I’m well loved known throughout my college for various reasons by both students and staff out side of college, calm quiet and fairly decent. I spose, at least its what I’ve been told!

What Is Parkinson Disease

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Parkinson disease is a brain disorder that affects nearly 1.5 million Americans and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. There is no known cure but with research and medication there is hope.

A British physician, Dr. James Parkinson, first described the disease in 1817. It is characterized by slowness, tremors, stiffness and a loss of balance. Only two of these symptoms need to be present, especially if they are more apparent on one side of the body over the other, for a diagnosis of the condition to be made.

Brain cells called neurons are responsible for passing along electrical impulses throughout the brain, from one cell to the next, allowing the brain to function normally. In Parkinson disease, cells in a certain part of the brain called the substantia nigra begin to die or become impaired. These cells are particularly important because they produce a chemical called dopamine. This chemical is responsible for smooth and coordinated movement of the body’s muscles. According to the National Parkinson Foundation, “When approximately 80% of the dopamine-producing cells are damaged, the symptoms of Parkinson disease appear.”

So who’s at risk for developing Parkinson disease? Almost everyone the disease doesn’t seem to be selective and affects women and men equally; and while it is generally considered a disease of the elderly that occurs after the age of 65, about 15% of the affected population are diagnosed under the age of 50. Parkinson affect 1 out of every 100 people and there doesn’t seem to be any social, ethnic, economic or geographic boundaries either. “Currently, researchers suspect that the cause of Parkinson disease in most individuals reflects a combination of genetic factors and environmental exposures.” (National Parkinson Foundation)

Parkinson’s isn’t easy to diagnose either. There is no blood test or brain scan that definitively points to the condition – doctors diagnose based on the process of elimination and patient symptoms. Other signs of the disease include: a shuffling walk, small cramped handwriting, muffled speech, depression and stiff facial expressions. There are doctors, neurologists, who specialize in the treatment of neurological disorders and of these even more specialized practioners who specifically treat Parkinson disease.

There are treatment options available to ease the symptoms of the disease. Most of the hallmarks of Parkinson disease are caused by the lack of dopamine-producing cells existing or still functioning in the brain, so conventional treatment includes medications that mimic or replace dopamine. This helps to reduce the stiffness, tremors, slow movement and poor balance associated with the condition. Several promising new medicines are being developed and studied to halt the progression of the disease, too.

Surgery can be another option to help ease the symptoms for some Parkinson sufferers - brain surgery can be dangerous so this is most often only considered after treatment with medication seems ineffective.

There is currently no cure for Parkinson disease, but there is support and treatment available and with researchers working diligently to develop medications to halt the progression of the disease, there is also hope for the future.

Futurama (Season 4) DVD Review

A brainchild of Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Futurama launched itself into homes across the galaxy in Spring 1999. Spragel personally trains Bender and provides him with a secret vile which contains “the essence of flavor”. Confident in his newfound abilities, Bender challenges Elzar to a one-on-one cook-off on the “Iron Cook” TV show… Other notable episodes from Season 4 include “Where No Fan Has Gone Before” in which Fry travels to the planet Omega 3 where all things Star Trek (including the show’s cast) have been banished by the galaxy, and “Jurassic Bark” in which Fry and Professor Farnsworth collaborate to bring Fry’s old dog Seymour back to life…

Star Trek: Voyager (Season 7) DVD Review

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Nominated for 30 Emmys, including seven for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series, Star Trek: Voyager continues the rich tradition of the original 1960s Star Trek franchise. Created by former L.A. police officer Gene Roddenberry, the Star Trek TV series morphed into a franchise famous for the unprecedented fanatical devotion of its fan base. Lasting only three seasons during its original network run, Star Trek struck gold with its syndicated reruns, launching a number of motion pictures featuring the original cast as well as novels, comic books, collectibles, and reams of Star Trek-related memorabilia. The third spin-off from the original Star Trek series, Star Trek: Voyager premiered in January 1995 to modest critical acclaim, but experienced great success with television viewers, slowly increasing its ratings as the series progressed. Following on the heels of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), the series precedes Star Trek: Enterprise (2001) while boasting an all-star cast that includes veteran actress Kate Mulgrew (whose past TV appearances include such shows as Dallas, Cheers, and Murphy Brown). Yet instead of pursuing the classic Star Trek mission to “boldly go where no one has gone before,” Star Trek: Voyager is more about going where the crew has been before…

Star Trek: Voyager follows the exploits of the crew aboard the starship USS Voyager. As the series begins, the Voyager is on a Federation mission to capture a rogue ship of Maquis rebels (a race first introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). While in pursuit of the Maquis, the Voyager enters a system known as the badlands, and both ships are instantaneously transported to the Delta Quadrant over seventy-thousand light years away on the outskirts of the galaxy. Soon, both the Maquis and the crew of Voyager learn they were brought to Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, a mysterious force overseeing the safety of the Ocampan race who live in the shadow on an impending threat from the vicious Kazon. When the Kazon destroy the Maquis ship, the Voyager crew merges with the Maquis crew to defend themselves from the Kazon. Having destroyed the device which could bring them home, the crew of the Voyager - led by Capt. Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), and the crew of the Maquis ship - led by Commander Chakotay (Robert Beltran), must work as a united front in order to meet their mutual goal of finding a way home…

The Star Trek: Voyager (Season 7) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere “Unimatrix Zero” in which Seven Of Nine discovers a place known as Unimatrix Zero, where Borg drones become individuals for a short period during their regeneration. However, once the regeneration process is complete, the drones forget all memory of the event. Capt. Janeway views this revelation as an opportunity to attack the Borg, and the Voyager must execute the plan perfectly if it is to succeed… Other notable episodes from Season 7 include “Nightingale” in which Harry Kim, Seven Of Nine, and Neelix stumble across a war between two alien nations while scavenging for dilithium, and “Friendship One” in which, having established regular contact with Alpha Quadrant, the Voyager receives orders from Starfleet to hunt down the lost 21st Century Earth probe, Friendship One…

Below is a list of episodes included on the Star Trek: Voyager (Season 7) DVD:

Oil Paintings For Sale

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Depending on one’s budget and tastes, there are many choices available in today’s oil painting market. Fine art auction houses exist in most American cities, and may be a good starting point for serious collectors and people buying art as an investment. For the buyer who cannot afford an original Renoir or Monet, but who wants to enjoy looking at an oil reproduction instead of a paper reprint, there are countless companies that commission skilled artists to paint such reproductions.

If one is less sure of what one wants, some companies have extensive online galleries to help a person decide if a particular style or theme works. Some companies also accept orders for custom oil paintings, which could be portraits of people or pets, oil reproductions from a favorite photograph, or anything else that catches the customer’s fancy.

For a new collector, one way to get an idea about styles and prices of original oil paintings or valuable reproductions is to visit commercial art galleries and auction houses. Shows by new artists can provide opportunities to buy original art at a reasonable price. Online auctions may be another way to find good value for money. Unless trained to appraise art, investors are probably better off asking an expert art appraiser to help them find oil paintings that are likely to provide a good return on their investment. The same rule applies if you are planning to sell an oil painting.

The Internet has opened up a global oil painting market, letting people buy oil paintings from distant cultures. Many online sites that sell oil paintings let a customer search by category, theme, size and type of painting surface. Most large cities also have fine art liquidators that hold auctions periodically. Such auctions may provide the opportunity to get some good deals on oil painting reproductions.
