Lights Out - From San Francisco to Fort Bragg - Part V to “Last Moment of Light”

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

In the days and weeks to follow—every muscle throughout my body was aching, head spinning; yet I was not worn down like most of the troops, perhaps I had a lot of training in San Francisco, and back in St Paul, Minnesota in karate, and my body was somewhat ready for this kind of training. Face to face with the Drill Sergeants, I half straightened my attitude out, somewhat came to an understanding, willingly obedient, yet at night I still came in soggy drunk, hanging onto whatever I could.

On the top bunk, of the bunk bed I was on (in the large room we lived in, the bunk beds of us 44-soldiers were in two rows, 11-to each side, one soldier on top, one on the bottom, old WWII, wooden framed, square frame, slanted roofed barracks, and going toward the double doors, to the right, it lead out into the courtyard, just beyond the doors, straight ahead, was the latrine. The windows in the building were wide, on both sides of the wooden structure, several to each side; the outside painted white, the inside pale white, and green.), as I was about to say, a southern boy slept on the top bunk, he didn’t seem to like me, or get along with me all that well, just gave me sneers like the Sergeants often did, not like Smiley and I, and he didn’t like me coming into the barracks drunk and coming in so late, I felt it was none of his business. He was a strict soldier, and our attitudes conflicted, ferocity of rectangular emotion around him, I called it now, then it was just bitterness, and he decided to confront me on this drinking issue one evening, just before lights out.

I came in, it was perhaps a few minutes before ´Light’s out!’ and he grabbed me by my shirt (about my height, and weight), said: “It’s two minutes to lights out, and here you are walking in half drunk.” He was correct in his observation.

“Oh,” I said, adding “…is that so…!” and broke his arm from my shirt, downward, and a second later, took my palm and pushed him against the wall. He was stunned I had broken his arm hold so easily, and without had him almost pinned against the wall. Then I grabbed his shaving cream and squirted it all over him, not sure why, but it was the closest thing to my free hands now, but perhaps to shame him or belittle him in front of the onlookers, whom were the soldiers in their bunks now. Then stepped back into a fighting stance, and egged him on. I did not want to beat him without him having another chance to strike me, it didn’t seem right. I mean I could have killed him right there, had I wanted to, his open posture was almost an invitation for a slaughter, but only a professional fighter could have seen that. I had just come from San Francisco and Studied Karate under the guidance of the greatest Karate instructor of its day (1968-69), Gosei Yamaguchi, thus, having two years in warlike arts in fighting; I was ready.

His instinct was good, he backed down, and I never pushed anyone beyond that point, the point of no return, never put anyone in a corner I always told myself, give him a little room to get out, it could save you a lot of trouble. That was always inbreed in me, not sure of the why or how it.

My thoughts at the time were: why does this wooden man, one I can break so easily confront me like this. The following morning he was standing outside, with two friends, and I came up to him and said, “Do you want to finish it…?” and added, let me show you this: and before he could say a word I had thrown several punches and a back kick (not to show off but to show him I no longer was going to play with him), and I pulled my punches lest I break his nose or jaw or something. After the demonstration, his eyes bulged out, and he just said, “You’re a trained fighter, it would be crazy to fight with you,” and walked away.

The Formation Of Spanish American Culture - Drama, Music And The Fine Arts

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Drama flourished throughout the colonial period, reflecting the popularity in Spain of Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, and Calderon de la Barca. The chief cities had theaters in which the luxury of trappings and wealth of offerings mirrored the varying fortunes of their mines. Potosi at the peak of its wealth had a theater, which vied with the most pretentious in Spain. The viceroys of Mexico and Lima installed private theaters in their palaces. The plays of the Spanish masters were staged, as were many others written in America, most of which are Iong since forgotten.

The most popular early dramas were religious allegories, thoroughly Spanish in tradition and designed to convey the truth of the gospel to unlettered Indians. Their pageantry and color were effective in conveying the lessons of creation and salvation, as well as the record of Spain’s greatness. Indian pageantry was amalgamated with the Spanish to produce a hybrid folk drama in which Indian dances and music were overlaid with Christian and Spanish legend. To this day, a traveler in Mexico may see Indian festivals in which the ancient conflict between Christians and Moors is re-enacted, with much heroic posturing, crackling of fireworks, and the final destruction of the hated Moors.

If the traveler asks an Indian the identity of the Moors whom he belabors so assiduously, he receives no clear answer.
Spanish America produced dramatists, but few were more than pallid imitators of the Spanish immortals. Sixteenth century Mexico boasted GonzaIez de Eslava, whose allegorical comedies were so simple, direct, and well contrived as to give the Mexican stage brief distinction. GonzaIez is remembered for his imagined insults to a pompous
viceroy who promptly ordered his arrest.

Spanish America’s sole dramatist to win international acclaim was Juan Ruiz de Alarcon, who left Mexico at twenty, studied at Salamanca, returned briefly to his native land, and spent the bulk of his life in Spain. Alarcon, a creole hunchback tortured by the jeerings of the peninsulares, wrote sensitively and brilliantly, and his twenty three plays gave him a firm place among Spanish men of letters in el siglo de oro.

Meager in quantity and quality as was Spanish colonial literature, it was superior in both respects to that of the English and French colonists in the New World.

Spanish America made but slight contribution in music. The music of Castile and Andalusia was introduced to America, there to be modified by the rhythms of Indian and Negro, yielding a large volume of popular songs. The plaintive songs that came from these mingled sources were sung by the common people to the accompaniment of the Spanish guitar or the African marimba. Meanwhile, well born and proper daughters of the wealthy peninsulares and creoles picked out traditional melodies on the harp or clavichord. The chief cities boasted orchestras. The churches continued the Spanish tradition of sacred music.

The architects, painters, and sculptors of Spanish America had a superb heritage from the Spaniards who, for more than 500 years, had been building some of the most splendid churches in Christendom; carving wood and stone figures for their facades, choirs, and altars; and painting glowing canvases to add a final touch of glory. The soldiers, civil rulers, traders, and farmers who settled America brought memories of the cathedrals of Seville, Leon, Toledo, and Avila; of the delicate grace of the Giralda and the Alhambra; of the sculptured power of the Portico de Gloria at Santiago de Compostela; of the tombs and altars of Valladolid, Saragossa, and Salamanca; and of the paintings of El Greco, Zurbaran, Ribera, and Velasquez. This was the heritage of even the humble builders of America.

The colonists brought a love of beauty with them, and throughout the colonial period they sought to emulate the Spanish tradition. They, too, would have churches enriched by noble sculptures and paintings. However, the sculptors and painters of Spanish America were imitators, seldom creators. There is beautiful carving of stone and wood in the choir stalls, finials, pediments, reredos, corbels, and cornices of churches in Puebla, Morelia, Guatemala Antigua, Lima, Quito, Sucre, and Arequipa; but their grace is generally a borrowed grace. Over altars and in sacristies are smoky paintings of saints, virgins, angels, cardinals, and bishops.

Many of these canvases were brought from Spain, and an obliging sacristan is always ready to tell the visitor that this is an authentic Murillo, that a Titian, the other a Zurbaran. Some are genuine, but many are poor imitations. The borrowings continued as American painters made pale copies of the masters or, painting on their own account, followed the styles of Ribera and Murillo. There were a few painters of considerable technical skin, among them the Mexicans Juan Herrera, Jose Maria Ibarra, and Miguel Cabrera, and the Ecuadorian Miguel de Santiago.

Artists never lacked support. Schools of fine arts were established toward the end of the colonial period. Mexico’s Academy of Fine Arts, organized in the late eighteenth century when Goya was renewing the prestige of Spanish painting, was well housed, amply financed in fact, it had everything except artists.

In architecture, Spanish America made best use of its cultural heritage. The wealth of field and mine and the labor of docile Indians were early dedicated to the rearing of palaces and religious edifices. Some few fine examples of secular buildings have survived, but Spanish America is spotted from end to end with cathedrals, churches, and monasteries of such symmetry and power as to attest the fervor and artistry of their creators. They are, however, unevenly distributed. Such regions as Chile and La Plata, yielding neither gold nor silver and producing only prosaic grain and cattle, built only modest temples. Peru, Ecuador, and Mexico boasted the finest and most richly ornamented churches and cathedrals, but with Mexico far in the lead.

The architecture of the thousands of churches and monasteries built in the colonial years faithfully recapitulates the development of architecture in Spain. Moslem motifs appear almost everywhere in geometric caprices of decoration and, above all, in the thousands of varicolored tiled domes of Mexico. Eleventh century Italian influence is clear in the constantly recurring sculptured and rounded arches of the Romanesque. Thirteenth century French Gothic is widely represented; the more than 400 fortress churches and monasteries built by the Franciscans, Augustinians, and Dominicans in Mexico are usually Gothic in feeling, although with frequent addition of Romanesque arches, Moslem designs in decoration, and plateresque details.

Sixteenth century Italian Renaissance appears in the jewel like plateresque; the cathedral of Morelia in Mexico, perhaps the loveliest church in America, is a splendid example; the facade of the convent of Acolman is another instance. Philip 2nd’s late sixteenth century retreat to classicism, represented in Spain by the gloomy Escorial, had its influence upon the cathedrals of Mexico City, Puebla, and Lima. Seventeenth-century Italian baroque (sometimes described as the child of Michelangelo’s exuberance), which was elaborated in Spain and exaggerated by the Salamanca architect Churriguera, dominated American builders during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, yielding big and little churches adorned with tumbling angels, riotous fruits, and tossing flowers on their pediments and facades; Taxco, Tepozotlan, and Ocotlan are a few of the many instances in Mexico; the churches of the Jesuits and the Franciscans in Quito are among the finest in South America. The late eighteenth century brought a brief burst of creative imagination in architecture, chiefly in Mexico; there Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras built the lovely Carmelite church in Celaya, and Manuel Tolsa elaborated the exterior of the cathedral in Mexico City.

Numerology and Recurring Numbers

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Do you keep seeing a particular number and wonder why? Or do you have a number that you consider to be “lucky″ for you?

I’ve heard many stories of people for whom a particular number keeps coming up in their life - whether it is looking at the clock and the digits always say 11:11 or 22:22. Sometimes it is a very specific number, like 12:34 or they keep being drawn towards say 4’s or 9’s, maybe even choosing a particular number because they feel it is lucky for them.

Why do people have an affinity towards certain numbers?

To help explain this, I’ll illustrate with a story. A long time ago, I bought a Triumph Spitfire sports car - I doubt if there are many around now, but at the time it was a great little sports car and it felt good driving it. Up until I bought it, I hadn’t particularly noticed many other Spitfires on the road. However, driving around in the new car, suddenly I noticed them everywhere and often we would get a wave from the other car driver too! It wasn’t that there was an increase in Spitfire owners all of a sudden, it was just that I had an interest in them now and so I was noticing them more.

Going back to numbers - there is a similar phenomenon at work. There is some internal interest in a particular number, which is prompting a heightened awareness of that number around you. This is sometimes referred to as a “wake up call”, but generally there is something in you that is prompting you to be more aware of something.

Perhaps you are a busy little troglodyte, getting on with day to day operational details and forgetting about your overall life plan. However, your sub-conscious or your spiritual self knows that there are aspects of yourself that are being ignored and this is acting to draw your attention to it, often by focusing upon a particular number which is also usually a clue as to what needs attention.

Numerology can help unravel the clues.

Pythagoras understood that there was more to numbers than just quantitative mathematics and went further into the philosophy of numbers and placed “qualitative value” on specific numbers. He devised a system of using numbers to help gain self understanding, which is at the heart of numerology today.

Your individual birth date (among other things) can tell you a great deal about your own personality traits. The fact that you are being drawn to a particular number, shows that there is some specific area that you need to focus on.

What that significance is will depend a great deal on your own birth date. If it is a number that is missing from your birth date, then it could be that you need to do work on those characteristics that are missing. Or, maybe you are ready to move on to a different phase in your life and need to adopt different attitudes and values to do this.

There is no one straight answer for everyone, but understanding more on number values will help point the way. You can view more on numerology and the meaning of the number values on my web site, but following are some general characteristics relating to each number.

1 - Self expression, communication.
2 - Relationships, intuition, empathy.
3 - Mind, social, spiritual.
4 - Practicalities and the basics of life, physical needs.
5 - Freedom, travel, expansion.
6 - Creativity, home life and family.
7 - Learning, teaching, overcoming obstacles.
8 - Control, finances, wisdom.
9 - Service, care of others, idealism.

If you are seeing a specific number or combination of numbers, then look at what attribute is represented by that number and see what you might wish to change about yourself.

A Look At HD Tivo

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Have you ever heard someone say they were going to Tivo a program and wondered what they meant? HD Tivo is a term used to describe a high definition digital video recorder, which permits the owner to record television programming and store it to an internal hard disk for later viewing. So, the next time someone says they are going to Tivo something, they are simply saying that they are going to record it so that it can be watched at a later, more convenient time.

HD Tivo units function much like a VCR, which permits users to record programs onto a videotape. The modernized form, however, is HD Tivo. This unit is not only beneficial for recording, however, as it is also capable of pausing and/or rewinding a program already in progress. If, for instance, you have to step out of the room for a moment, you can pause the show and resume play when you reenter the room. The convenience of HD Tivo is unmistakable, which is why many entertainment buffs own this new video recording equipment and wouldn’t think of turning on their TV without it.

Some HD Tivo units allow individuals to specify certain programs to record based on specific criteria, including program title, actor, genre, time, etc. This availability depends upon location and service, but is often beneficial to those who schedule future recordings ahead of time.

HD Tivo products have been manufactured by industry-leading companies, including Philips, Toshiba, Sony and others. In order to use Tivo, individuals are required to subscribe to a monthly service, which generally costs approximately $10.00 to $15.00 per month. Lifetime subscription plans, which were previously offered by Tivo, have since been discontinued in place of a new program allowing customers to receive the unit at no cost in exchange for prepaid service.

When subscribing to any service, including HD Tivo, it is important to carefully read the service contract and understand the service for which you are paying. The monthly costs, service and cancellation policies should be clearly outlined in any contract. Any questions should be asked prior to signing of the contract and/or exchange of any payment. If a prepaid amount is required, it is unlikely that a consumer would be permitted to cancel their service during that time and still receive a refund. However, this possibility should be discussed with a Tivo specialist. Along with the unit itself, consumers will likely receive an owner’s manual and detailed instructions on how to operate their unit. As with any new technology, it may take some time to adapt to the features. By carefully reading the manual and paying close attention to the instructions of the representative, you should be able to Tivo in no time.

How to Find the Best Online Poker Site

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

If a person is looking for the best online poker site available on the internet, there are a number of things that need to be done. First, a person needs to generate a list either mentally or on paper as to what they expect from the best online poker site for them. This may include how much prize money is given away each month, who endorses the site, how many players are allowed to be seated at a table and if players can specify which players they would like to sit with at a table.

Once this list of priorities is generated, a person can begin to do their research. A person can either use search engines to locate the best online poker site options, or they can go directly to sites that they know exist. After the individual comes to the specific sites, they can review testimonies by other players and find out if the site offers a casino bonus. Record TV Shows While On Vacation

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

You probably aren’t aware of it but there is a good chance that your digital video recorder has the ability to be programmed to record specific TV shows from places other than your living room. This might sound a bit strange at first but let me try to explain how this works. You are especially lucky if your digital video recorder happens to be a TiVo.

TiVo provides an online service that will allow you to access your TiVo digital video recorder over the Internet. This way you are able to program it to record a TV show or movie that you can then watch later at a time that suits you. The online service provided by TiVo comes free as part of your TiVo subscription and is available on all TiVo Series 1 to 3 boxes.

It is not quite accurate to say that you can access your TiVo box online. It would be more accurate to say that you can access the box in a rather indirect way. This mentioned service works by letting you access TiVo’s web servers and by logging into your TiVo account, you can make the changes to what you want recorded. Those changes take place on the servers.

When your TiVo box contacts those web servers (this is done periodically), the entered scheduling information will be downloaded to the DVR and then the actual TiVo box can carry out your instructions to record the TV program of your choice. Now isn’t that a clever feature?

You will need experience
Even though the system is highly recommended it can create something of a problem for the less experienced users. The TiVo boxes contact the TiVo servers but it is done at irregular intervals and therefore the boxes won’t necessarily receive your updated instructions in time to act on them. You might end up without having the program recorded that you wanted. The number of hours in advance of the program you have to change the instructions via the online service depend solely on what type of TiVo box you own.

If you own the TiVo Series3 box it will make contact with your home wireless network every half hour and update the information you have entered with the online service. So you will need to make the changes at least 30 minutes before the show you want recorded is aired.

The TiVo Series1 box requires that you plan ahead because this model connects to TiVo’s servers via the phone lines and this is only done once every twenty four hours. So you will need to plan at least a whole day in advance or you might want to consider upgrading to the Series3 version.

Record while on vacation
There can be some implications with this kind of technology but it is obvious that if you can make it work for you then it can’t be much easier to record the TV shows or sports events that you find out that you have to watch on TV, even though they are going to come on before you get home.

Now you can just contact the TiVo servers via the online service they provide. This will take care of it (assuming your TiVo box is on a wireless network). Even if you are away on an extended holiday, you can update the DVR’s instructions for which show you want recorded.

This service is truly valuable but it can some people might argue that with an addition of a SlingBox you can download the contents of your DVR directly over the Internet to your laptop or other portable device. Now this will not be for the ordinary family man that forgot to set the VCR before he left home but if you are truly into the technology behind these things do a Google search on the topic to learn more.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament Strategy - How To Play AQ

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Playing AQ is a very difficult hand to play for beginners. In early position, it is probably best to just fold this hand pre-flop. In middle to late position, you should raise three to four times the big blind in an unraised pot. If the pot has been raised before the action gets to you, consider folding the hand. After you raise pre-flop, make a continuation bet on the flop about three quarters of the pot size. Many times you will win the pot right there without showing your hand. If you hit a pair on the flop, continue to play aggressive on the turn. Try to put your opponent on a hand if he calls your flop bet. If you believe that you are ahead in the hand, continue to play the hand aggressively. Many times you will miss the flop completely and face a difficult decision on the turn. What are you supposed to do now?

When you miss the flop, you have to rely on your past observation of your opponent. It is not enough to simply guess your way through the hand. It is necessary to have a read on your opponent so you know what he is likely holding. If your opponent folds to a flop bet most times, it is likely he has a very strong hand. If your opponent calls many flop bets, he could have a wide range of hands. Against an opponent who shows strength, you should consider giving up the hand. Against an opponent who has a wide range of hands, you should consider bluffing on the turn or river. It is not necessary to put your opponent on an exact hand all the time. Pay attention to your opponent’s betting patterns and you should know how to proceed in most circumstances. Playing AQ requires more than looking at your own cards. Effectively playing AQ requires an ability to read hands.

#64 Virginia Cavaliers Preview

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

Spring practices are in the books and fall camps will be here before you know it so that means getting an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time in August and Matt Fargo is here to help you get a grasp of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview.

#64 – Virginia Cavaliers 7-5 SU; 6-6 ATS

Fargo’s Take The Cavaliers have had four straight winning seasons and four consecutive minor bowl appearances. However, that is not what head coach Al Groh envisioned when taking over at Virginia five years ago. He talked about bringing the Cavaliers to the top of the ACC and competing for a National Championship but that has not happened, not even close. 2006 looks to be his toughest year with Virginia attaining a winning record being his biggest challenge. Gone are four assistant coaches from last season along with the some of the biggest playmakers that Groh has had on both offense and defense. Suspensions and departures over the spring and summer raised red flags about the players he’s brought to Charlottesville. Of the 24 players who signed letters of intent, eight failed to meet either NCAA or University standards and were not admitted. If Groh can put together a winning season and another bowl bid, it could be his best job since returning to his alma mater but those goals are a stretch.

Returning Starters on Offense – 5 The offense slipped slightly last season and things could be much worse this year. Gone is quarterback Marques Hagans, who could do just about everything on offense, and he will be replaced by an inexperienced signal caller in Christian Olsen. Olsen emerged from spring practice clearly ahead of Kevin McCabe and Jameel Sewell but he has just 23 career pass attempts to his credit. Also gone is leading rusher Walter Lundi, who did not have a spectacular 2005 but whose leadership will be sorely missed. The offensive line needs to replace three starters including D’Brickashaw Ferguson, the first lineman to be taken in the NFL draft. The strength of the team is at wide receiver where the top six players are back but that does little good if Olsen doesn’t have the time to get them the ball. This could very well be the lowest output offense since 2001 when it averaged just 20.8 ppg.

Returning Starters on Defense – 6 Like the offense, the defense has plenty of holes to fill as well. After allowing only 17.7 ppg in 2004, the unit allowed 23.3 ppg, which was a solid 40th in the country, but the talent was there to be much stronger than that. The front seven was a solid group but that is now the weakness of the defense as four key starters need to be replaced. The strength lies in the secondary where eight experienced players are back, including the recent reinstatement of safety Tony Franklin, last years team captain. Mike London takes over as the defensive coordinator and his job isn’t going to be easy especially with so much inexperience at key positions. The defense is very young but there is huge potential, especially at linebacker. With Franklin back, there are only two senior starters on the entire stop unit and both reside in the secondary.

Schedule The potential is there for a fast start to the season and that will have to occur because the back end of the slate is next to impossible. The non-conference games are not very daunting with home games against Wyoming and Western Michigan and road contests against Pittsburgh and East Carolina. If Virginia can somehow go 3-1 in those games then six wins are a definite possibility, but no guarantee. The Cavaliers start ACC play with road games at Georgia Tech and Duke but then the next three are at home against Maryland, North Carolina and NC State, all games that could go either way. Then the fun begins. Virginia travels to Florida St., hosts Miami (Florida) and travels to Virginia Tech in its final three games. The Cavaliers better have a 6-3 record heading into that stretch because they won’t be winning any of those contests.

You can bet on… Virginia has underachieved since Groh took over as he has been blessed with some enormous talent in his five years as head coach. The Cavaliers no longer have that heading into the season so they are going to need to do some overachieving if 2006 is going to turn out to be a successful campaign. Virginia has six home games on the schedule this year and with the Cavaliers going 22-9 against the number at home since Groh took over, the potential is there for more profits in this season. The problem lies on the road where Virginia is only 6-13 ATS as a road underdog since 2000. Five of the six home games are winnable so if they can keep that home edge, another minor bowl game is a definite possibility.
