The Shield (Season 2) DVD Review

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

Nominated for 4 Emmys and 4 Golden Globes, including Best Television Series - Drama, The Shield is one of the top police dramas of the past decade. The brainchild of creator Shawn Ryan, writer for such hit shows as Nash Bridges (1996) and Angel (1999), The Shield made history in 2003 by becoming the first basic cable series to win a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series (in the past, only non-ad supported shows such as The Sopranos and Sex And The City have done so well). The hour-long drama boasts a strong, well-rounded cast who, along with the writers/producers, have managed to make The Shield the longest running series on the FX Network…

The Shield centers around an inner-city Los Angeles police precinct where the lines between right and wrong are often blurred. An ongoing power struggle between a group of corrupt, yet effective, cops and their new boss, Capt. David Aceveda (Benito Martinez), remains the focal point of the show. Det. Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis, of The Commish) heads up an elite unit known as the Strike Team. An effective leader who bends the rules when they fit his aims, Mackey often butts heads with the by-the-book Aceveda who weighs his own political ambitions against the cost of bringing down Mackey and his associates. Veteran Det. Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder, of ER) knows the ropes, admires Mackey, but also knows how to play sides of the game. For the 2005 season, Glenn Close - star of such films as The Natural (1984), Fatal Attraction (1987), and Air Force One (1997) - joined the cast as Capt. Monica Rawling. Together, this celebrated cast maintains an internal tension among themselves while carrying out a unified fight against the criminal element - a fight that keeps the streets of L.A. safe…

The Shield (Season 2) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere “The Quick Fix″ in which Vic searches feverishly for the whereabouts of his wife and children. In his absence, the Strike Team allows a shipment of cocaine into Farmington that turns out to be bad, prompting the team to enter Tijuana in search of the culprits. Meanwhile, Detectives Wyms and Wagenbach attempt to solve a series of gangland assaults… Other notable episodes from Season 2 include “Homewrecker″ in which Mackey, Wyms, and Wagenbach investigate several murders at a women’s shelter, and “Breakpoint” in which Mackey secretly works with Dutch and Claudette to uncover the whereabouts of a missing kid…

Easy To Learn Blackjack System

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

In all of the games used for gambling, Blackjack remains the only one in which a participant can actually change his chances of winning during the game. Whether those running casinos wish to admit it or not, Blackjack does involve skill.
Blackjack actually refers to a specific holding (two cards totalling 21). However, this is also the most common term for the game - also known as 21.

You are playing against the dealer at all times. Many people feel that you must play differently depending on where you sit at the table. This is not true. Players sit in a semi-circle around the dealer, but no matter where you sit, you are still playing against the dealer. You owe nothing to the other players - it is your own money you are risking.

In Blackjack, the suits of the cards have no significance. Tens, jacks, queens, and kings all count 10. An ace counts 1 or 10 at the player’s option. Cards from 2 to 9 have their face value. Therefore, if you hold a nine and a five, you have 14. A nine and an ace can be either 10 or 20.

The simple idea of the game is to get closer to 21 without going over than the dealer does. You are dealt two cards and the dealer is dealt two cards also - one always face up, and one face down. You are then given the option of standing with the cards you have (”stick” or “sticking”) or you may be “hit” and be given another card (”hitting”). You may take as many cards as you wish to, but should you go over 21, you “bust” and the dealer wins automatically. The dealer will not take any cards until all players are through at taking cards. Thus the dealer’s biggest advantage is here. Any players that bust, lose their bet - even if the dealer goes bust.

If you stay at 21 or under and have a higher total than the dealer, you win; if both you and the dealer hold cards equalling the same total, it is a “push″ and you stay even (not winning or losing). If the dealer has a higher total without busting, he wins.

The pay off if you win is even money (one to one). If you get a “21″ or “Blackjack” (21 in two cards) you are paid at a rate of 3 to 2 (bet $10 win $15). If the dealer gets blackjack at the same time, you push - all other players lose.

You may take “Insurance” when the dealer’s first card is an ace. After all players and the dealer have two cards, he will ask “Insurance?”. You may bet another 1/2 of your original bet. Payment is 2 to 1 if the dealer does get blackjack.

At this point, after each player and the dealer has 2 cards, he will start at the immediate right and see if the player wants a card (a “hit”). If yes, the player scratches the table with his fingers or cards towards himself. If not, he places his cards under his bet or makes a negative movement with his hand. Dealers respond to hand gestures only. If you go over 21 “bust” you turn your cards over (face up) and the dealer takes the cards and your bet. If you stay at 21 or under, the dealer will continue to the next player.

As we mentioned, an ace can be counted as a 1 or 11. When you have say an 8 and a 10, you have a “hard” hand. However, an 8 and an ace gives you a “soft” hand. Because you have a soft 19 or a hard 9 if you count the ace as a one.

The dealer on the other hand does not get these options. When all players are through, the dealer turns face up his hole card. He must take a card if he has 16 or less. He must stand (in most casinos) on a hard or soft 17.
Most players try and guess what the dealer has and look at the other cards on the table before deciding to hit or stand. Most players also never win at Blackjack.

At this point, you should understand how the game is played. The following is your best strategy as determined by computer testing:

- Always hit when you have 11 or less.

- Always stand with a hard 17 or more.

On a hard hand: When the dealer’s up card is from 7 to Ace, draw if you have 12 to 16. When the dealer’s card is 2 to 6, stand on 12 to 16 except if the dealer’s card is a 2 or 3, in which case you would draw.

On a soft hand do the following: Always draw to a soft 12. Stand on 18 except when the dealer has a 9 or 10 value card. Stand on 19.

In most casinos, you may double down (double your bet) after your first two cards.

On a hard hand: Always double with 11, with 10 except if the dealer has a 10 or ace, with 9 against the dealer’s 2 to 6 up card.

On a soft hand: With ace 2 to ace 7 double against dealer’s 4, 5, or 6. Also with ace 6 against 2 or 3 and ace 7 against 3.

Another play is the splitting of pairs. If your first two cards of the deal are the same value, you may place a bet the same as your original, and play two hands.

Always split ace-ace, and 8-8. Never split 10-10, 5-5, or 4-4. Split other pairs only when the dealer’s card is 2 to 6. These rules may seem complicated and difficult. However, after playing at home, this basic strategy will require no concentration.

Grandpa Was Always Old [1956-1967: Elegy]

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

Grandpa was old—he was very, very old, it seems all my life he was old. I know now, looking back, how many years he lived, 83-years [died: 1974], but he looked old at forty, perhaps fifty. I’m fifty-eight, I often wonder if I look old, as old as he looked to me; whatever the case, he was very old to me. Something gray and cold and at times hurtful, that been around forever, he was part of that. He personified that to me, to others, but particular to me.

I’m sure Grandpa never thought when he was gone, someone would write stories about him, many of them, and in the stories they tell of this younger man, me, with a sense of humor I hope, and everyone knows, Grandpa does not have to have grace, or lightness of touch, a dream of beauty breaking through the sun beams coming to earth. Grandpa can be Grandpa.

O, those who knew him shall have many good memories, some that other people will never have, because of him.

Long ago, when he was the owner of a restaurant, down town in St. Paul, Minnesota, when I was a kid, I used to go eat there [1956-19??]: a hamburger, pie and coke; I always had the same. He’d give it to me free, and sometimes he’d make me pay, sometimes not, but he’d always walk away saying: “…godam kids all da like is da-hamburger, coke, hamburger, coke…” if indeed that was all he was saying, I never got past that, couldn’t make out the rest.

His friend, who helped him with the restaurant, told me he got robbed a few times, but then later on in years to come, when he was going to sell the cafe, Grandpa said about his friend: “godam son-bitch, crroook…he steal everyding from me, fu..k ass…” oh well I’d say, just give him a ride home.

This is a real picture of Grandpa. He was always old in spirit, and at the end of his life, I don’t think he knew what to do with it.

He was trampling through his lilac bushes during the last days of his life, pacing a path in the house from his porch to the kitchen; the ceiling was his sky full of stars now. He got old, so very old quick, and up and died, but it seems I never saw him get old, he just was always old, and then died. I suppose I didn’t see him get old because he was always old to me.

I think Grandpa did all he wanted to do in life, his road was long and we: my brother, my mother and myself, are all better off today because he let us live with him so long ago, had he not, who knows what would have taken place.

Indiana Pacers 2006-07 Preview

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

One of the most disappointing teams for the past few seasons, the Indiana Pacers have been on a steady decline ever since their former small forward Ron Artest charged into the stands to attack Pistons fans. After losing his replacement, Peja Stojakovic for almost nothing, they find themselves without championship caliber talent for the first time in half a decade.

The anchor for the Pacers is power-forward Jermaine O’Neal. Jermaine is one of the premier post players in the NBA and is by far the best player that the Pacers have. If they want to guarantee themselves a playoff berth, they need to ensure that O’Neal stays healthy and productive for all eighty-two games in the season. This is a high task for a player who has missed a total of 69 games in the past two seasons alone.

The Pacers hope to offset their loss at the small-forward position using two players. The first is last years first round pick of Danny Granger. Granger is a talented player who showed flashes of brilliance in limited playing time last season. Ahead of him on the rotation is a familiar face in Al Harrington. Harrington was traded back to the Pacers after a very productive season with the Atlanta Hawks. If he can continue his improved players, Indiana should have a formidable post presence game-in and game-out.

Starting at the guard positions are Stephen Jackson and Jamaal Tinsley. Tinsley is one of the better point guards in the league when he is able to stay healthy. The problem is that he just can’t stay healthy. Jamaal has missed at least 30 games for the past three seasons. Stephen Jackson is a pretty good shooting guard who sometimes makes bad decisions. His 16-18 points per game adds a much-needed scoring threat from the guard position.

On the bench for the Pacers are newly acquired Marquis Daniels and young players such as Sarunas Jasikevicius and David Harrison. Daniels was an integral member of the Mavericks bench last season and should be a good sixth or seventh man for the Pacers. Harrison and Sarunas were slightly disappointing last season but have the potential to pan out nicely for the Pacers. Sarunas in particular is a deep three-point threat who could add another dimension to the Pacers.

Rick Carlisle has his hands full with the Pacers once again, but he shouldn’t find it a problem to get to the playoffs once again. Winning a playoff series or more, however, is an entirely different story.

Predatory Lenders Being Targeted

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

Maine State is all gearing up for the introduction of a landmark bill that can put brakes on predatory lending practices. Speaking on this issue, supporters of this bill have said that if introduced, this bill would be the first in the country addressing such a long-term national crisis.

The bill is cosponsored by more than 100 legislators and around 40 consumers, lending, religious and other organizations. According to House speaker Glenn Cummings, D-Portland, who is the bill’s chief sponsor, predatory lending is a crime because of which not only individuals who opt for such loans, but even their subsequent generations are going to be affected. Even communities would not be spared from its ill-effects. Predatory lenders use various strategies to trap homeowners and make quick profits. Some of these include troubling homeowners with balloon payments, hidden fees and unreasonable increase in the interest rates. Due to this, several people are now at the risk of losing their homes due to foreclosure and bankruptcy.

According to a study conducted by Coastal Enterprises Inc. the rate of foreclosures in Maine State have been constantly increasing in the last four quarters. Sen. Dana Dow of Waldoboro believes that these types of predatory lending practices are not carried out by local banks or local credit unions of Maine. According to him, this situation of loan abuse is due to an increased number of out-of-state brokers and lenders doing business in the state.

Under this new legislation, borrowers would be given increased protection in case of high rate loans. Several practices such as flipping loans or persuading borrowers to get their debt refinanced in case of defaults would be abolished. Apart from this, there would be an increased restriction on the fees charged to the borrowers. The lenders would be directed to approve loans only to customers who will be able to repay the loan.

Eagles-Saints Saturday Night NFC Divisional Playoff

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

It’s time to start thinking about tomorrow night’s Philadelphia Eagles-New Orleans Saints NFC Divisional Playoff matchup. The Eagles enter the divisional round as the hottest team in the NFC having won six straight games including their first round win over the New York Giants. Can they keep flying high against the heavenly Saints down in the bayou? Jimmy Boyd is all over Saturday night’s premier week two playoff matchup with his five Star NFC Divisional Playoff Best Bet.

It would make a great story wouldn’t it? The lowly Saints rose up from the doldrums surrounding Hurricane Katrina and a dead end franchise to capture a division title and a Super Bowl breathing life back into a decimated community. Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch. There’s no doubt that the Saints have virtually crossed an ocean to get to this point, but are they ready to beat an Eagles team which has been to the big game?

The Saints have just one playoff win in their 40-year history coming at home back in 2000 against the St. Louis Rams, but it wasn’t experience that got them to this point and I don’t think experience will be the determining factor in this game. If it is, then we should chalk one up for Philly. In this game, the offenses will shine, as they have all season long for the top two offenses in the NFL.

Drew Brees led the NFL with 4,418 passing yards and finished second in the MVP voting to L.T. Three-time Pro Bowler Jeff Garcia has returned to Pro Bowl form after losing the starting job in Detroit. Both of these players have made all the big plays for their respective teams to get them to this point, but this game could come down to which team can mount the best ground attack.

New Orleans ranks just twenty-third in the league against the run allowing 128.9 yards per game. Brian Westbrook is coming off his best game ever in the playoffs rushing for 141 yards and a touchdown. Perhaps, Westbrook will be Philly’s best opportunity to torch the Saints’ defense.

Philly has shared much of the same fate against the run this season. The Eagles rank twenty-sixth in the league against the run and will have to deal with 1,000 yard rusher Deuce McAllister and Reggie Bush this week. Perhaps, the Saints will try to establish the run to set up the pass and that will be their key to victory.

These teams last met earlier this season back in mid-October down in New Orleans with the Saints prevailing 27-24 on a John Carney field goal in the closing seconds. Both Philly and New Orleans are different teams now. That was when the Saints were unbeaten at home winning their first three games in New Orleans before losing four of their last five. That was when McNabb was still under center for the Eagles. It was Philly’s first loss of a stretch where it would lose five of six games.

At that time, these teams were pretty evenly matched as the game on October fifteenth would indicate. Now, one team clearly has the edge over the other and it just might not be who you’d expect. Make sure you’re on board with Jimmy Boyd for Saturday night’s NFC Divisional Playoff Best Bet. If you’re looking for that one big time winner this weekend, Jimmy Boyd has it.

The Brain Operator

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

He sits alone
In a pure white coat
Surrounded by monitors
Keeping things afloat
Camera nine isn’t working
Something must be wrong
He phones the man in charge
To ask what’s going on
“Just a technical fault”
Comes back the mans reply
“Then sort it,” shouts the operator
He shakes his head and sighs
Everything is functioning
Up, down, round and around
Clicking, tapping as it moves
All a familiar sound
Signals being sent
For you to move your head
Next you have a yawn
Something tells you it’s time for bed
The operator can close down now
Puts the monitor on automatic
He chooses a dream for you
Tonight – nothing too dramatic
He leans back in his chair
Checking things are okay
He’s now retiring for the night
It’s been such a busy day

Learn To Play Guitar Tab - Happy Birthday To You

Saturday, December 30th, 2006

This is the time for you to learn the most popular song in the English language according to Guinness Book of World Records. You do not need to know sheet music. You only need a guitar so let’s start!

We will use guitar tab notation which will show you where to put your fingers on your guitar strings as you play. We will explain how to use it later on.

Here are the lyrics:

Happy Birthday To You Happy Birthday To You Happy Birthday Dear_____ Happy Birthday To You

Let’s learn to play the first line with guitar tab:

Happy Birthday To You

1. ———————-

2. —————1–0—

3. -0–0–2–0———–

What does the lines and numbers mean? Good question!

The three lines represent the three highest strings on your guitar. Highest in pitch that is! If you hold your guitar the usual way it will be the three strings nearest your feet.

The numbers indicate which fret you are to press down. 0 means that you play a string without pressing down a fret. This is called to play an open string.

The first notes 0 0 2 0 means that you play the third open string twice, then play the second fret on the third string and then back to the third open string.

Hopefully you are recognizing the melody by now!

We will now learn the next line with guitar tab:

Happy Birthday To You

1. ———————

2. —————3–1–

3. -0–0–2–0———-

What right hand finger should you use? Well, there are many ways to play this song. If you are a complete beginner maybe you can use your right hand thumb to pluck the notes. It should be the easiest way to play the melody, I guess.

We will now learn to play the third line with guitar tab. We will use a name. Let’s take the name Peter, that is my name by the way! :

Happy Birthday Dear Peter

1. ——-3–0———–

2. ————-1–0—–

3. -0–0————–2–

What about the left hand fingers? You can of course use your index finger to play all the notes.

This way to play guitar will work with slow easy pieces but it does not work with more complicated guitar melodies and when you start to play pieces with more than one not at a time.

If you want to learn to play guitar in a more professional way you can use your left hand index finger to play the notes on the first fret, the middle finger to play the notes on the second fret and the ring finger for the third fret.

Time to finish this guitar lesson!

We will now learn to play the last line with the following guitar tab:

Happy Birthday To You

1. –1–1–0———–

2. ———–1–3–1–

3. ——————–

As all people have a birthday there will be many occasions to play this song! I suggest that you learn the melody by heart, one line at a time.

Winning At Video Poker - The Only 4 Tips You Need to Win Big!

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Video Poker is a slot machine which involves a level of skill and you can get the odds in your favor, if you know how to play correctly.

The odds of you winning at Video poker are determined by following 4 simple tips, that are easy to learn.

If you apply them, you will dramatically enhance your chances of success.

How to Play

Firstly, let’s look at how the game is played.

Video Poker has the same rules as draw poker, except that you play a machine rather than other players.

The machine deals five cards on the screen. The player can, take up to five new cards or keep any he has.

The player keeps the cards they want to keep by hitting the “hold″ button that corresponds to the individual card shown.

When the choice is made the player presses the “play″ button, and the cards discarded are replaced by new ones.

The result of the game is determined by the outcome after the final hand is dealt.

4 simple to tips to win big!

Here are only four tips for winning at video poker and then you’re all set, to have fun and have the odds in your favor

Tip 1 - Get the best odds of success from the start

Video poker machines are based upon a 52 card deck and there are 2,598,960 possible hands combinations.

The programme in a video poker machine is programmed to simulate the probabilities of drawing any combination from the deck.

Because this is a set probability, casinos adjust the pay tables to produce the house edge.
The payouts for all video poker machines are the same except for the payout on the flush, full house or royal flush.

This means playing the highest paying machines as this puts the odds in your favor

Here are comparisons of payouts on a jacks-or-better machine.
Payout Payout with Strategy

9 for a full house 6 for a flush 99.5%
8 for a full house 5 for a flush 97.4%
7 for a full house 5 for a flush 96.3%
etc

A 9 / 6 machine will hit a royal flush around once every 40,000 hands. The 8 / 5 odds are once every 45,000 hands so you need to play machines with best payout

Tip 2 - Play maximum coins.

If you bet five coins, all winning hands are paid out by a factor of five, except for the royal flush. This is a bonus amount designed as an incentive to play five coins.
If a player plays less than maximum coins then they won’t win a Royal Flush and can’t win at video poker longer term.

Tip 3 – You need to play for a long time

A player, on the 9 / 6 machine, has odds of 1:40,000 of getting a Royal Flush, or equivalent to around 100 hours of play.
You need to play any Video poker machine until you win a Royal Flush to emerge ahead

Your bankroll comes from your own resources, or by collecting money from the intermediate hands that give you income along the way.

Winning at video poker does not mean playing for the odd hour! You need to play for a long time and be patient.

Tip 4 - playing with a strategy.

If you want to increase your chances of winning at video poker, play with a strategy. There are slight differences between games and different strategy cards need to be used, but their all easy to learn.

There are plenty of free strategy cards on the internet. Simply, print one and keep it for reference and refer to if you need to.

So, there are the 4 tips, use them and good luck in your quest for consistent jackpots.
