Where Can I Learn How To Speak German?

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

I had my first experience in learning German in middle school. For two years, I sat in class and listened intently, did my homework, studied and got pretty good grades. But, guess what, a few years later I had forgotten everything I had learned. Why, because there is much more to learning German then just sitting in a classroom and taking notes. So when people ask me “Where can I learn how to speak German” I always tell them the best place is in your own home.

You see, learning German is an ongoing process. Sure you can sit in class, take your notes and learn the language, but once the class ends and you have no one to speak German with anymore, all that knowledge simply fades away. You need to utilize a system that will allow you to keep speaking German – a class that ends at the end of the school year can only do so much. To truly learn the language you need to constantly experience the give and take of a conversation. That’s how the language becomes imbedded within your brain, it becomes second nature.

That’s what is great about today’s computer based, German Language systems. You can use them for as long as you want to. They don’t end like a typical German Class would. You can complete the course as quickly as your comprehension allows and then continually go back over it to reinforce the words and phrases you’ve learned.

Further, the better courses include a member’s only forum where you can converse with other students or German language experts for as long as you want. These courses can come quite close to the immersion techniques that most German language teachers recommend.

Another great benefit to using a computer based system to learn to how to speak German is that there is no set time that you have to be in class. Really, in today’s world, who needs that added pressure of having to be at class at a specific time? With today’s systems, you download them to your computer and start working at your own pace. It doesn’t matter how quickly you’re moving along or how long a particular lesson is taking, you’re working from home, at your own pace.

Today’s learning systems also encompass a multi-pronged approach. Instead of just sitting in a classroom somewhere, listening to a teacher and taking notes. These systems use, audio, written, flash cards even games to blast the language into your brain. All of these tools work together to create a language learning firestorm that will have you fluent in no time.

So if you’re really serious about learn German, you owe it to yourself to check out the world of computer based language learning. The better systems, can rival that of a personal German language coach, by your side, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Lawrence Schaefer is an expert in German Language learning systems. His hype-free reviews have helped thousands of students find their ideal German language system. Only a Dog Lover Could Really Love “Best in Show” - A Mockumentary

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

Best in Show – 2 Stars (Average)

Director Christopher Guest teamed with Eugene Levy as writers for “Best in Show” that looks at the funnier side of the legendary Westminster Kennel Club’s annual competition, otherwise known as a prestigious dog show.

Premiere voted the result as one of “The 50 Greatest Comedies of All Time” in 2006. Premiere, an American and New York City-based film magazine, was published from 1987 to 2007 before becoming an online-only publication.

Best in Show uses a camera crew to follow the foibles and fortunes of the owners (and handlers) of five show dogs headed for the annual Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show in Philadelphia.

Traveling from Florida is Cookie Fleck (Catherine O’Hara) and Gerry Fleck (played by film writer Eugene Levy). Gerry literally has two left feet and Cookie apparently bedded hundreds of men on her way to marrying Gerry.

She meets many of her former lovers in the film, aggravating her bumpkin husband to no end. Cookie was “hot” and apparently very available.

Coming from North Carolina is Harlan Pepper (played by director and writer Christopher Guest, the real-life husband of Jamie Lee Curtis, a marriage that has lasted since 1984). Pepper owns a fly-fishing shop and is enamored with his Bloodhound “Hubert”.

Shari Cabot (Jennifer Coolidge) is a voluptuous, wealthy blond bimbo and gold-digger married to Leslie Cabot (Patrick Cranshaw). Shari owns Rhapsody in White, a perfectly manicured poodle who is the two-time defending Best in Show champion.

Her husband Leslie says not a word in the film, appears dead, embalmed and strapped to a wheelchair. Shari is not only enamored with her poodle but also with her handler Christy Cummings (Jane Lynch). Christy and Shari are in more heat than any masculine, healthy dog could muster.

Coming from who knows where with their entry are Stefan Vanderhoof (Michael McKean) and Scott Donlan (John Michael Higgins), an outgoing, outrageous, stereotypical gay couple.

These four entrants are joined by Meg Swan (Parker Posey) and Hamilton Swan (Michael Hitchcock). The Swans are anything but graceful, quiet and beautiful to be around.

They are DINKs (double income, no kids) who constantly scream at each other throughout the film, raising their invective to an art form. Meg and Hamilton are so up tight it is a wonder they can even relieve themselves at appropriate times.

Despite being a comedy, the behavior of the Swans in Best of Show is so well done and lifelike that their tirade ceases to be funny and becomes disturbing. Neither Posey or Hitchcock received an acting award for their performances, but I could not fault them for their effort.

Two more notable performances in this film come from Buck Laughlin (Fred Willard) as the “color commentator” at the prestigious competition, and from Mark Schaefer (Ed Begley, Jr., almost my namesake) as manager of the Taft Hotel that put up with the dog show owners in Philly.

Fred Willard’s commentary in this film lives on it is used occasionally by sports talk radio hosts Groz and Gas as a humor segment on the most popular sports talk station in the country, KJR 950 in Seattle.

Despite its rating as one of The 50 Greatest Comedies of All Time by Premiere magazine, Best in Show comes up short on the awards end. It earned a Golden Globe nomination as Best Comedy and a few lesser awards.

Best in Show earned only $16 million at the box office, perhaps because of its slow start. It opened the 1st week at only 13 theaters nationally, moved to 53 theaters its 2nd week, 291 its 3rd week and finally broke though with 497 theaters its 4th week, topping $2 million before dying off after 12 weeks.

Best in Show is referred to as a “mockumentary”, a word that does not appear in The New Oxford American Dictionary (my personal word bible). One might call Best in Show a parody of a documentary with humor as the centerpiece. It is good for some laughs.

“Mask”erading in the Movies

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

In movies and theatre, costumes and masks do much to add to the drama. In the ancient times, the symbol of two masks was used to denote Greek comedy and tragedy — one joyful and the other sorrowful. In those ancient times, the actors had to wear huge masks that amplified their voices. The audiences then were habituated to seeing characters as tall as seven feet thanks to their enormous masks and high shoes. After all, the characters had to be viewed by people sitting even far back in the audience.

In the world of today, with lighting, microphones, and video cameras, actors have it a lot easier. They can now literally dress for the part that they are playing. One may say that ultimately, the costumes do little more than accessorizing the movie. To combat that view, we have the old adage, “Clothes maketh the man.” Clothes can also herald the success or failure of a movie. You might have a wonderful script with superb actors. However, if you end up making the blunder of getting the look wrong, success will become somewhat uncertain. It is no wonder that stylists and costume designers are always in demand when it comes to today’s movies. If you want an example of how the look of the actors can impact the success of a movie or TV show, Sex and the City is a great example.

As a result, the makers of the movie, Shakespeare in Love, put in a lot of effort for recreating the Elizabethan times by creating costumes that were true to the time. Naturally they did not enjoy the benefits of a silicone halloween mask. Thanks to these efforts, the movie won the Academy Award for Best Costumes for their efforts. Apart from this, Titanic, Moulin Rouge, and Chicago are examples of relatively recent movies that did all that they good to get the look right.

If you are going to get a mask for halloween, make sure to get professional halloween masks. But, then it is not always about halloween. For a kids party, you could consider silicone clown masks.

Of course, if you are planning on dressing like a superhero, you should think about getting a movie-like mask. Masks are the most popular accessory for superhero movies. However, Spiderman was just one among many others to hide his identity in a mask. Remember how Robin Williams pretended to be a woman in Mrs. Doubtfire? That mask actually moved the story forward. More recently, we saw Gwyneth Paltrow don a similar mask in her portrayal of an overweight woman in the hit movie, Shallow Hal. If you love fantasies, the face of Harry Potter’s arch enemy, Lord Voldemort is unforgettable. His mask is very apt for the character of “the one who is not to be named″.

From the movies to costume parties, masks have been rising in popularity. And movies such as The Man in the Iron Mask, and the Jim Carrey starrer, The Mask, have only added to the demand for masks.

Masks can make the character. Find out about getting a spfxmasks.com silicone halloween mask or about spfxmasks.com professional halloween masks and spfxmasks.com/maskclown.html silicone clown masks.

How to Create “Hip,” Mature and Lush Harmonies

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Rarely is a chord played with its tones contained in a single octave, the root on the bottom, the third in the middle, and the fifth on the top.

Usually chords are “voiced!”

This basically means that the positions of a chord’s tones are scattered over the keyboard. The tones may be altered, doubled, added to, missing, and so forth.

There are a great variety of possibilities available in voicing chords. Voicing chords properly is an art within itself. Using the correct voicing techniques in your playing will give your improvisation a “hip,” mature and full sound. Chords played in root position just does not seem to do the job when playing Jazz, Rock, Pop, Blues, Gospel and “Smooth Jazz” piano.

Learning and mastering good voice leading techniques in your playing is not difficult if you just follow some simple rules.

1. The most important notes in any chord is the 3rd and the 7th. The 3rd of the chord defines whether the chord is a major or minor chord. The 7th of the chord will define whether the chord is a dominant or major chord. Usually the bass player will play the root and fifth. The root and fifth are not essential tones and can be completely left our from your chord
progressions. If you must use the root and fifth try using it in your right hand, not your left. You should add your “color” tones in your right hand.

2. When you are taking a solo and not “comping″ (accompanying) for another soloist you should play your chord voicings in your left hand, so that the right hand can be free to improvise, do fills, double the left hand, add extensions, etc.

3. The range of your voicings is also very important. A good rule of thumb to remember when voicing your chords, is to always try to voice your chords around middle C. Keeping your voicings around middle C will sound full and clear. Limits of approximately an octave above or below will assure best results by preventing the voicing from assuming a quality of thinness or muddiness.

Karl Rove, Department Of Injustice And Propaganda

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Karl Rove’s candidates have a history
Of benefiting handsomely from conveniently
Cleverly timed federal investigations
Propaganda and the politicization of justice
Compliments of the Bush administration
Rove loves and lives for dirt and degradation
Character assassination and deterioration
Note Rove’s curious political pattern in Texas
Election years were accompanied with a nexus
An F.B.I. investigation of some sitting Democrat
For such trickery, he’d definitely get a hearty pat
On the back for his evil-minded, masterful chicanery
His announcements and leaks to the press
Sure caused for Senator John McCain a mess
An honorable war veteran who has stood the test
Rove’s smear-and-fear tactics pollute and infest
Our national fibre, soul, and collective conscience
The 2000 GOP primary was Rove’s big chance
To hone his skills in dirty politics and dance
With the big boys, while being purely cynical
His lies and smear campaign cruel and unethical
Cherry-pick intelligence to justify war in Iraq
Than stab heroic Ambassador Wilson in the back
For going public on false allegations of WMD
Mr. Rove you deserve imprisonment with Libby
We should get you to sit before a grand jury
Interrogate you about your sly cunning subtlety
Perhaps we can also question VP Dick Cheney
You say CIA operative “Valerie Plame is fair game”
Now tech-savvy puppet master Rove it’s your name.
The sneaky firing of eight United States attorneys
Looks like a political purge full of hypocrisy
The prosecutor purge another suppression
Of Bush-era scandal - a huge abuse of power
Rove, you’d make Richard Nixon green with envy
Soon the national media shall expose you publicly
God will judge you for how you handled Benny
America’s Joseph Goebbels of political machinery
This Karl Rove shall be your unmistakable legacy.

How To Spot The Bad Deals When You Are Buying A Digital Camera Online

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Online camera retailers usually use the following three methods to convince an online shopper to purchase one of their digital cameras. They are: The Bait and Switch, Transaction requires a Callback, and Card Charged before product shipment.

Bait and Switch

One of the oldest tricks in the book, is listing a popular product at an amazingly low price to draw consumers in only to find that it is not in stock, or in stock in a gray market or refurbished condition (but not readily declared as such). The market is very competitive and any quick search on a reseller rating website will produce a long list of companies to buy from. Retailers recognize that the lowest price in that long list of search results ultimately translates to clicks and traffic so they will take unethical measures to draw you to click on their link.

Some of the worst practitioners of this exercise are merely boiler room organizations that consist of a room with only telephones at a nondescript location with dark windows. Essentially, their business plan is to sell gray market products without disclosing that fact, or new products at cost, to get you on the phone to “hard-sell” you accessories at an obscenely marked up price you will “need”. If you don’t want these accessories suddenly the camera you wanted to order becomes out of stock. These companies make virtually nothing from the sale of the camera. Their whole directive is to sell accessories. Their pay is totally dependent on it so this is a very hard selling technique. Needless to say, these are the same type of businesses that do not want to hear back from you if you are having problems with your purchase.

“Hard Sell” is the ugly brother of the average “Soft Sell” - typically, your camera being in stock doesn’t depend on the results of the “soft-sell” technique. Soft-selling is generally just good sales, along the same lines of “do you want fries with that?” Occasionally annoying, usually ethical and, in some rare cases, useful at bringing things to your attention that you may not have considered.

One easy way to identify these organizations is to look at the typical accessories like: batteries, memory, camera bags, etc and look at the prices. If they are selling the cameras for hundreds less than other websites but their accessories are noticeably and drastically higher than others, that should be a red flag.

Another interesting scenario is if you choose a model of camera and three places have a price within just a few dollars of each other (which is not too suspicious in of itself). But upon further investigating each site, you find that all the “recommended accessories” are exactly the same from website to website and are exactly the same inflated price. In my research, I found three sites that were identical, turns out they were all the same company. Unscrupulous businesses will always have three or four websites in play at any one time. As soon as one of them has been branded by one too many burnt customer experiences, they shut it down and up pops a new one offering all the same exact products as their sister sites allowing them to spread the misery over a wider, less noticeable customer base.

Transaction Requires a Callback

Once you have made a purchase through a retailer’s website, if there is a problem with the card, address, etc it is a good standard and legitimate practice to prompt a phone call to verify certain facts which is why unscrupulous retailers will exploit this standard business practice and even fabricate them to provide an opportunity to hard sell you the stuff they need to sell you and that you don’t want, at least, not at their prices. If you read a lot of reseller feedback entries in the rating websites, take special note of the poorly scored complaints, if you see a series of people complaining of the “call back” scenario, stay away.

Ideally, you should be able to go to a retailer’s website, choose your product, enter your payment method, confirmation of delivery with tracking number and receive your product. Good resellers may find themselves in a position to verify customer information and that alone should not cause alarm, but the second the subject of additional product you did not put in your order comes up, beware.

Card Charged Before Shipment or Long Shipping Times

Because a lot of unethical camera retailers depend on the misrepresentation of gray market stock, they sometimes make a practice of taking your order and not shipping it straight away. Wanna know why? Typically, gray market products can’t be bought on demand, one or two at a time, but in large bulk shipment sizes. So what they do is take your order along with several others until they compile enough to constitute an actual order for the product. They are basically selling you what they don’t have and intending you to hang on a hook until there are enough of other people like you that come along wanting to order the same item.

In the US, it is against the law to charge your account until the product ships. If you have found that you have been charged but the retailer cannot prove that your stuff is en route, cancel your order immediately.

How To Run A Super Slick Professional Pub Quiz

Monday, October 30th, 2006

There are 2 stages to running a great pub quiz:

1) Venue, questions and promotion - The strategy as it were - You’ve built and it and “they” will come. Then…

2) Lets call it logistics or tactics - How it works on the night itself at the human level. Having the tools in place is good and essential but it’s critical you get the “power” to them (analogy hell here!) Basically – Can you deliver a fun filled night or will it be an argumentative, confused disaster one off no repeat ever affair? This article is about getting (2) bang on right.

You need a formula to follow to ensure the quiz runs smoothly and that you (hopefully) and the players (absolutely essentially!) have a good time and want more. First things first then - You need a quiz question master and he or she needs tools

Who for Quizmaster?

• Someone who won’t be fazed by public speaking.

• Who can confidently and clearly read out the questions.

• Who won’t get led of track by banter or phased (hopefully not) by a heckler or argumentative know it all quiz geek.

Where will the quizmaster sit to “work”?

• Make sure space is kept for them.

• One that can’t be overlooked by team spies!

• This is critical - The quizmaster must been seen as objective and above reproach. Accusations of spying on him or her can ruin the whole evening and even lead to the quiz being called off. Not good!

How will they be heard?

• Unless it’s a really small venue, you will need a P.A system capable of being heard above general pub conversation – not everyone will be taking part in the quiz.

• Many pubs will have this sort of thing - but check and if so can you use it?

• If not see if they can hire one or check out your local Yellow Pages on or offline and look for disco or PA hire suppliers.

• A simple system will be pretty cheap but be sure to practice with it first so you don’t get embarrassing sound losses or ear bashing feedback.

Who will mark the questions?

• Most question masters can mark up to 10 teams′ answers between rounds, but they may need a helper.

• Alternatively in a more “friendly” quiz you may let teams swap papers and mark each others′ quizzes between rounds then hand in marked answers for you to keep score.

On The Night:

• The quizmaster announces that the quiz will start in x minutes.

• Collect team names and entry fees.

• Record the name of the team on your scoresheet.

• Give each team some answer sheets for each round - One per team and a couple of spares

• Have a stock of pens for them if needed.

Start the quiz!

Start by reading out team names (giving everyone a name check) and begin the quiz.

1. Each question should be read out once.

2. A short break then repeated.

3. At the end of the round, quickly recap all questions.

At the end of the round:

1. Collect sheets from teams for marking (perhaps announcing that if they′re not handed in within a minute, the team gets 0 points)

2. Or get teams to swap papers then read out each question then its answer.

3. At the end of each round read out the cumulative scores.

Remember the golden rule – the quizmaster is always right and the idea of the quiz is to get the answer on his or her answer sheet.

At the end of the quiz:

1. Give the final scores with the top 3 in reverse order.

2. Have a tiebreak question or 2 ready (usually a number answer with the first correct answer or closest answer as the winner).

3. Run your cash jackpot if applicable, give out the prizes.

Then finally, announce the date and time of the next quiz and start preparing!

A Note on Team answersheets and Quizmaster score-sheets:

• Team answer sheets – Basically a grid lined A4 type sheet with answer write in numbered boxes and a line on top for the team name.

• Make sure you have lots of them, one per team per round – so if you have 10 teams and 6 rounds you′ll need 60 (and take some spares!)

• Quizmaster score sheets – Where you have a line per team name and boxes per round so you can record the scores per round and easily total up at the end.

• You can do them easily on a PC in Excel or find free ones to download online

Above all - GOOD LUCK and have fun too!

Watch Satellite TV Online - Answers To Whether You Should Watch

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

People are often caught in the dilemma of whether they should watch satellite TV online or go for the conventional TV set. Those who are already watching PC satellite TV find it an enjoyable experience to watch satellite TV on PC. Those who are not but considering could be worried about the installation process. Is it going to be difficult? Can you watch satellite TV online even if you are not good with computers and are not tech-savvy? This article would answer all your questions on whether you should watch and how to watch satellite TV online.

To watch satellite TV online is nothing new really. People have been doing so with PCTV cards since a couple of years back. But back then, the internet in particularly in the area of TV streaming was only in its infancy stage and it is only until recently that the technology has grown matured and ripe for pickings. PCTV cards were the only way then to watch satellite TV online. However, the setup was a bit challenging with the internet PCTV cards which require dismantling and fixing it within your computer. Not many people dared to attempt this feat. Then some smart developers came up with external plug-and-play PCTV cards. It was much easier but the pricing scared off the average TV viewer.

Then entered PC satellite TV which turns your PC into an instant satellite TV set where you can watch satellite TV online for free. It is new and many people are starting to get curious about how it works and what are the benefits to watch satellite TV online with PC satellite TV software. Read on for the quick benefits.

1. Good Choice of TV Programs

Compare satellite TV services and PC satellite TV software side-by-side and you would soon realize you would rather watch satellite TV online with software than with the services. The reason is simple. With satellite TV services, you are limited to perhaps a few hundred TV programs at most. With software, you get access to thousands of international satellite TV stations. TV viewers love the variety of programs from LIVE sport events to financial news and foreign entertainment programs they find packed in the software. Such software typically carry more than 1000 TV channels and in some cases more than 3000 over channels.

2. Smart Pricing

Did we mention about the pricing? If you can afford to buy you and your partner a dinner out, you can afford to buy the PC satellite TV software to watch satellite TV online. Surely this is something within the reach of most working adults and even school-going teenagers. Teens nowadays have quite generous allowances from their parents. In case you wonder what are the extra costs after you paid for your satellite TV software, there are none really. Once you bought it, you also have the rights to watch satellite TV online for free. This is because the TV channels are all Free-To-Air FTA broadcasts that are unencrypted for public viewing.

3. Digital TV Quality

Even though the satellite TV channels are FTA broadcasts, it does not mean that the quality is poor. On the contrary, you would soon be awed by the picture and audio quality of the satellite TV programs you watch online. The TV channels also do not suffer interferences from bad weather which is so typical of satellite dish TV systems. You can watch satellite TV online in peace even when there is a storm outside your home.

These are just a couple of merits in making use of PC satellite TV software to watch satellite TV online. Come to my satellite TV blog as I share with you where you can watch satellite TV online instantly from home within the next hour.

Why Star Tattoos Designs Are So Popular

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

Star tattoos are one of the hottest design motifs or themes within the world of tattoo. In fact star tattoos are sought after more then any other type of design. This is based on monthly keyword search volume on the internet so the statistics could be a little off but overall star tattoo designs are incredibly popular.

Please be forewarned just because something is popular especially a certain tattoo design does not mean you should run out and get one. These are the types of tattoos you will regret later in life when they are no longer popular or the in thing. Instead you should always get any permanent tattoo or piercing because you feel a deep connection and the tattoo or piercing holds some significant meaning for you other then it was popular or I saw it on a famous celebrity. I can promise in another 20 years most people won’t remember the celebrity or that star tattoos were popular. This is not meant to discourage you if you were already out activity looking for a star tattoo design or pictures of star tattoos and the like. If you already feel a connection with the star as a tattoo symbol then by all means express yourself and go for it.

So why are star tattoo designs so amazingly popular? There are probably a wide variety of reasons and here are some of the things that customers have told us.

1. Unisex design- star tattoos are really a unisex design. This means that any type of star tattoo design be it a nautical star, or a stary night tattoo it really doesn’t matter stars are such a universal theme that they will fit well for both sexes.

2. Bold and Strong - Star tattoo designs are often very bold and strong. The thick lines or solid shapes make a bold tattoo that really stands out and can be seen from a distance.

3. Variety of Colors - Star tattoo designs can be done in a variety of colors and you are really not limited to anything specific. For example a pink colored star works just as well as a deep blue or a red star tattoo. So you can use a meaningful color scheme that enhances your overall design.

4. Cheap Designs - another reason they are so popular is star tattoos can often be designed either by hand or even done free hand by the tattoo artist. They are easy to design, change and adapt.

5. Variety of Sizes - Stars can be done in a wide variety of sizes and tweaked in many different ways to fit the space or location on the body where the person wants the tattoo.

6. Symbolic Meaning - there are deep meaning behind stars and yet they are sort of up to personal interpretation also.

There is also a large variety of different star types to chose from. For example there is the historic nautical star tattoo that was an important good luck symbol to sailors. There are shooting stars, and star and moon clusters just to name a few of the variations. There are really a lot of different options with start between, size, color, location and type of star the tattoo can have a very different and original feeling.
