Dog Artists David Hockney, William Wegman, and George Rodrigue

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Although contemporary art has moved beyond the Pop art of yesteryear, the most influential artists of the latter twentieth century have taken bold steps to include dog art as a central theme in their artistic endeavors. David Hockney, William Wegman, and George Rodrique, all still alive today, have not arbitrarily juxtaposed canines in their works but have put their furry friends on center stage – to soak up the limelight, offering the art world new glimpse of man’s best friend.

David Hockney (1937), who was born in Bradford England, spent the better half of his life in Los Angeles, California. Believed to be one of the forerunners of Pop art of the 1960s, with works such as We two Boys Together Clinging (1961) and A Bigger Splash (1967), his work influenced thousands of artists worldwide.

At the age of eleven, Hockney knew that he wanted to be an artist. No one is certain if he had any inspiration to include animals, specifically dogs, in his works, but it is known that he was willing to experiment beyond regular artistic parameters even when he arrived to the Royal College of Art in London in 1959. Hockney recollects that “the adventurous, lively students, the brightest ones,” were dousing themselves in “Abstract Expressionist paintings on hardboard.”(1)

Obviously etched in Hockney’s mind was that art could be something different, especially if it was unconventional. In his later works, we see Hockney’s two Dachshunds, Stanley and Boodgie, in a string of paintings and drawings. “The dogs are my little friends,” he says in an interview with Richard Natale in 1998 about his new book, David Hockney’s Dog Days. “It was probably my wanting a tender, loving subject.” Hockney goes on to rebuttal the art world that may not accept dog art stating, “I make no apologies for the apparent subject matter. These two dear little creatures are my friends. They are intelligent, loving, comical, and often bored. They watch me work; I notice the warm shapes they make together, their sadness and their delights.”(2)

Unlike Hockney who began dabbling in dog art later in his career, William Wegman has been daunting and confronting the parameters of mainstream art for years with his depictions of Weimaraners in artistic venues. Noted for his peculiar depictions that can border outlandish humor, Wegman has been known to be just too ‘dog-on’ funny.

After earning an MFA from the University of Illinois, Wegman taught for a while; he searched for a way to make his art ‘unleash’ his creativity on the public. While experimenting with photography and video, Wegman purposely took the remnants of Pop art to a level that mirrored and even mocked Americana.

His first Weimaraner was named Man Ray and was used in Wegman’s work in both video and photography. Man Ray was so famous that the Village Voice named him “Man of the Year” in 1982.(3) With the use of a massive Polaroid camera, Wegman took varied photographs of his Weimaraner in an array of poses and assorted guises. Later, Wegman’s second Weimaraner named Fay Ray appeared on Sesame Street as Old McFay. Wegman himself has appeared on-air with Johnny Carson, David Letterman, and on Saturday Night Live.

Similar to both David Hockney and William Wegman, George Rodrigue used dog art to exemplify his feelings about man’s truest comrade. As Wegman used his own Weimaraners in his creations, so did Rodrique use the muse provided by his childhood companion named Tiffany – who was transformed into the famed Blue Dog.

George Rodrigue, born and raised in Louisiana, began painting Blue Dog in tribute to his black and white terrier after her death in 1980. As it happened, Blue Dog eerily represented the Loup-Garou, or a Cajun werewolf in many of Rodrigue’s depictions.(4) Blue Dog soon gained international recognition as an inveterate legend, especially in the earlier 1990s.

Working as a graphic artist, Rodrigue explored the use of silk-screen with Blue Dog, which allowed the image to appear crisp, clean, and stark. Both famous public figures and private art collectors have purchased Rodrigue’s works. Absolut Vodka and Xerox even commissioned the artist to do ad campaigns. In the book entitled Blue Dog (Viking/Penguin 1994), Rodrigue depicts the change of Tiffany into this relished pop icon.

David Hockney, William Wegman, and George Rodrigue have all used dogs as a focal point, which shows that dog art is a powerful medium of expression that not only captures the art world, but mainstream art lovers as well. Through the Pop movement of the 1960s and contemporary art circles worldwide, these artists have used their pets as heartfelt muses that captivate and bring wonder even to the most stringent of critics.

Get in on the Action with New Video Releases

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Many people are so crazy about new video releases that they practically stand in line at 5 a.m. just to be the first ones to enter the video store. They always make sure that they have a copy of video release guides because they are so are adamant about keeping up with new video releases. They use these guides to circle and highlight the releases they must see, the ones they have already seen, and the ones that belong in the must-miss category.

To be honest, I go even further than most new video releases fans. I always list the new titles that come up when a new video release shoots across the screen. I used to wait too long for the new releases so I developed this compulsion to make lists of coming attractions.

You see, I used to be an English teacher at a nearby community college. I would have to wait until the semester closes to save new video releases because I would get so busy in the prepping, teaching, paper-reading processes and activities.

I would hit the video rental store and rent a stack of pictures as soon as the grades were finally in. The new video releases list has gotten longer than I would like and the ritual of racing to the video rental store has happened far too infrequently. My favorite actors have now made numerous films that I have yet to see.

I now feel clueless when Academy Awards week arrives. My friends and I used to dress up, make appropriate dinner foods, and scream on Academy Awards night. I realized that I have to update my list to include such movies as Mr. and Mrs. Smith, with Brad and Angelina Jolie. I also want to include movies by my absolute favorite, Nicholas Cage.

He has done a lot of films over the last two years that I have not had a chance to swoon over. I am disgustingly at a loss for the brilliant Nick in Lords of War, National Treasure 2 and The Weather Man. I also cannot wait for his movies that fall under the new video releases category.

Nirut in, Brutes Across the Trench (And Armies that Howl)

Monday, July 31st, 2006

(22,493 BC)

Advance: the Brutes of Planet Moiromma (originally part of the: Cadaverous Planets), done in several episodes for the series (2005-2006). THE Cadaverous Planets were originally written in 2004, and added on to ever since. So for Nirut to go to conquer Moiromma, should not be unusual for the reader should she or he know the history of Moiromma, and the Cadaverous Planets, which now Nirut somewhat belongs to, and is somewhat independent of, since he is from the Black Galaxy, and Moiromma is really a neighbor to Earth’s solar system, and part of the Milky Way Galaxy.

The Brutes appear in about five episodes in the ‘Cadaverous Planets’, and is a conquering group of Moirommalits, perhaps similar to Hannibal in his day. They ruled Moiromma for a short period of time. And now Nirut has decided to conquer this planet, since he has done so to all those around Moiromma, or is doing so at the present, or about to do so.

They, the Brutes, have what is called victory fights (perhaps similar to cockfights), in the Brute Ville, close to the cave-dwelling on Moiromma, where the king lives. Kahg is presently king, and will be defending his title soon. But at present a battle is developing (a war of sorts), and Nirut is in the middle of this battle. It is a different kind of battle in that the land of Moiromma is an arctic like planet, except for summer, which is six to ten weeks lone, and it is now summer, a the present time. Yob will be trying to win the title of kingship, after the battle is over. But none of this should matter to the reader, for it is the one main battle here that counts, and the Brutes howl as they fight, howl when they die. The Moirommalits are a primitive people, race, large structured people, and when they die they have a hundred resurrections before they give up life completely. They end up usually on another planet, upon resurrection. And I think this is enough to entice you into the battle of the Trench, or armies that howl, that is now taking place on the planet Moiromma, by the Ville of Brutes. Their world has been invaded by Nirut, and there are about 20,000-inhabidents, and that is about the number of infantry Nirut has at his disposal, with his five-hundred ships, that now have landed on the planet.

Armies that Howl

Back through the sharp cold winds and across the trench they fled, the hordes of Moiromma, the Brutes, whom were cut down at the ville, hands, feet, and all—the rest, only after they reached the King’s dwellings, stood fast,
washed-out with fear, whipped in frantic flight.

This moment, Rue awoke on the heights of Adi,
beyond the valley of the Brutes, and dwellings,
King of the cosmic throne—; Nirut leaped to his feet,
as the Brutes’ army routed, rushing here and there.
Nirut attacking, and the god Rue, watched in lay,
and Marduk the demon, saw what Rue saw; struggling hard for breath, Nirut’s senses shocked, he panted,
blood pouring from his side… the man that pierced
him was among the strongest, Yob, contender for kingship
on Moiromma…perhaps in proxy, under Nirut.

At the sight of Yahoo King Kahg, of the Brutes ran,
(the strongest of men), and Rue filled with pity now.

Marduk, now shooting a dark glance down at Nirut,
burst out at him a howl (echo), “What a debacle you craft!” To uncontrollable Marduk—said, Rue,
“What is your treachery—? “Halting his assault to be on Nirut’s army.

And a whirlwind from Rue spread like a whip, and
struck Marduk, on stroke, he fell to a knee—in mid-air.
And Rue slung a massive anvil with iron chains
at him, it lashed around both hands and feet…
(as below the armies of the Brutes, howled and howled
in defeat).

Kneeling there helpless, Nirut seized the moment, and
sent the Brutes plunging over one another to their deaths.
Headfirst many were hit on the head, and fell to the dirt.
Not even then did Rue lament for Marduk, or the Brutes,
the godless ones, as he called them, ‘Always plotting
miseries for your own kind, and fight for the crown of
Moiromma, save, besides those of men, as you torment
and embrace, lust and waylay, seduce the blind, and aged,
this is your reward.’ (So shuddered his voice in
thunder, so all could hear, protesting their ways.)

Falling Apart, a Message to Kate Moss

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Supermodel Kate Moss, career has fallen apart, in the last week, after we saw pictures of her apparently taking enormous amounts of cocaine. She has already lost lucrative contracts with H&M, Burberry and Chanel; a multi-million dollar contract with cosmetic giant Rimmel still hangs in the balance. Kate has back into rehab and apologized promising to get her life back on track.

Good Luck. Kate you are a great model and I know that most people wish you the best in your recovery, here are my tips for a successful journey.

Accept what you cannot change.

We have all seen the pictures so we know that you have been taking drugs, make the past history. You have a problem with drugs and you need to deal with it before it gets completely out of control. You might have thought that nobody could see the damage you are doing to yourself. Perhaps because you have got away with it for so long you have been kidding yourself. Keep taking drugs at the rate you have been and they will kill you.

Be honest with yourself.

By all means do a TV interview, but there is no need to drag others into it. Don’t try and blame anyone else even if you feel you have been badly let down. Inspire us with your honesty about your addiction; we will respect you for it. Act with integrity, you don’t need the money. Maybe you don’t want to work as much as you are now; perhaps the price you have paid is too high already.

Get clean and sober for yourself first.

In order to be the best mum, to Lila Grace, you need to be selfish and put your recovery first. You are not a bad person, just someone who has got completely out of control.

Seek professional help.

A professional will help you with the many emotions that start to surface as you sober up. Don’t forget there are many well known people who have trodden a similar path to you and have managed very successfully and privately to get off drugs and alcohol, use their experiences.

You are only human.

Thank goodness, you have started to show us your vulnerability, now show us your courageous side. In 6 months time we will forgotten all the sordid images we have seen.

Act as a role model.

Kids everywhere look up to you. Even if every other person in the fashion industry or in the city indulge coke, show them there is life after drugs. You will still be Kate and inspire thousands to follow you.

Trust others.

Your work will come back, if you show your sponsors you have changed. You will be able to leverage your recovery in a very powerful way if you choose to.

Enjoy the journey.

Discover things about yourself you might not like as well as things you actually do like about yourself.

Dump all the people who have colluded with your drug taking.

Your friends who have been keeping you “safe” have resulted in your addictions spiraling out of control.

Sorry is the hardest word to say.

Make amends to those you really care about and have caused upset to. You can do this by just staying clean and sober.

Reality TV – what is it, how to watch it, and how to have fun with it

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Reality TV got it’s beginning back in the 1940’s in the US with the classic TV show Candid Camera. In the UK, the first show that could be classed as Reality TV was the Seven Up! series, beginning in 1964.

The first modern reality TV series which directly followed a ‘normal’ person or group through their day-to-day lives was An American Family from PBS. That was followed by the UK series Family, and the Australian series Sylvania Waters.

However – Reality TV in it’s current form can be traced to MTV’s The Real World, which premiered in 1992. That show puts a group of strangers into one house and let’s the viewing audience watch how they interact as they live together for a period of a couple of months. The Real World is now in it’s 17th season – showing the idea is still popular enough to keep making the series.

The next major event was Changing Rooms – a British home renovation series that inspired Trading Spaces and Extreme Home Makeover. Changing Rooms took two couples and had them live in each other’s house and renovate one room.

And then came Survivor – based on the Swedish show Expedition Robinson, Survivor pitted 16 strangers on a deserted island having to literally survive, and being eliminated one by one until the last one standing was the one true Survivor.

The major types of Reality TV now being aired are:

Documentary Style – With a fly-on-the-wall type camera setup and unscripted situations, Documentary style Reality TV provides the most ‘realistic’ of all the genres.

Special Living Environment – MTV’s The Real World is the epitome of this subcategory, with a group of people thrust into a single home and living together as they are filmed on a continuous basis

Celebrity Reality or Celebreality – where a celebrity or their family is used as the focus of the film; such shows would be The Osbournes, The Simple Life, and The Surreal Life.

Professional Activity – Where the show is filmed around a job or a business; Cops is the epitome of this series type.

Game Show – This type of Reality TV has contestants competing for a prize, normally cash, but sometimes it is a job or some other non-financial reward. This type of show normally uses popularity voting to eliminate contestant, either internally by other contestants or judges, or externally, by viewer polling.

Such shows include Big Brother, The Idol Series, So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing With The Stars, America’s Got Talent, Celebrity Duets, Last Comic Standing, and The Ultimate Fighter.

Groups within the Game Show category include:

Dating-based competition – such as The Bachelor

Job-based competition – The Apprentice, America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, and Who Wants to be a Superhero.

Sports-based competition – The Big Break for golf, the Contender for Boxing, Ultimate Fighter for martial arts, and The Club for Aussie Rules football.

Self-Improvement or Makeover is the last major category for Reality TV shows. These shows do not have a defined prize normally other than something being improved or enhanced, even if that is the person’s own body.

Such shows would include Changing Rooms and the US Trading Spaces, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, The Biggest Loser for personal weight loss, Extreme Makeover for self-improvement, and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy – showing style and grooming improvement.

Overall, Reality Television covers much more than I have listed here, this can only be considered a brief overview of the genre to give some background and to show just how popular the format has become. Reality TV has been around in one form or another since we had television, and it looks like it is definitely here to stay. So why not have fun with it?

Numerology’s Intuition Number- Where Your Gut Feel Takes You

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Want to know how your Intuition works, where you hunches and feelings play a part in your life? Numerology can tell where your Intuition is strongest. We just need to calculate your Intuition number.

Calculating your Intuition Number

Your Intuition number comes from a specific branch of Numerology called Yantra or Magic Square numerology. It consist of constructing a Magic square using your birth date numbers, and then interpreting the values in the specific boxes in the square.

Your Intuition number is found by calculating your Life Path number, adding (1), and then reducing the result by fadic addition.

For example, actor Johnny Depp was born on June 9th, 1963; so his Intuition number would be calculated as follows:

Life Path = (6 9 1963) = (1978) = (1 9 7 8) = (25) = (2 5) = (7)

Intuition number = (Life Path 1) = (7 1) = (8)

The Intuition number values and their meanings are listed below.

Intuition Number (1)

You are a logical person, so you tend to avoid relying on your intuition, and use pure logic instead. You do get the occasional flash of intuition when something is of great importance to you; but you are more likely to call it a ‘hunch’ or a ‘gut feeling′, than intuition.

Intuition Number (2)

You have a natural, strong intuition which you heavily rely on. You take your intuition for granted as being part of your makeup. Your intuition is particularly strong when it comes to friends and loved ones. You will often know instantly when something is wrong with one of those you truly care about.

Intuition Number (3)

You have a strong intuition, particularly when you are being creative. Writing, art, and music all bring out your left-brain intuitive streak. However, in issues of logic and analysis, you are most likely to ignore your intuition and act on cold hard facts. In crisis mode, your intuition gets tossed out the window.

Intuition Number (4)

You listen to your intuition, but you also look at a situation logically before acting. You take pride in being a logical person, but deep down, you rely on your intuition to make decisions more than you realize.

Intuition Number (5)

You have strong intuition, but you use it haphazardly in your life. You tend to live in the future more than most people, and your intuition often helps you make the right choice in a situation despite the lack of good information. People tend to think you’re lucky because of the way you seem to always guess right when faced with important decisions in your life.

Intuition Number (6)

You have strong intuition when it comes to mattes of your home and family life. You know just the right time to call or visit a family member who needs help and support. Your intuition ranges over a broad area, but is called forth most often when dealing with your loved ones.

Intuition Number (7)

You have strong intuition in spiritual matters and the occult. When you turn away from these areas and ground yourself in logic, your intuition lays dormant. But, when you turn inward towards spiritual wisdom, your intuition becomes a force to be reckoned with.

Intuition Number (8)

You have very strong intuition in matters of wealth. You are logical is assessing the strength of any money-making venture, but your intuition, your “gut feel″ will almost always give you the right answers. Early in life, you may tend to ignore these hunches, but eventually you’ll learn to trust these feelings to your financial benefit.

Intuition Number (9)

You have strong intuition when it comes to being there to help others. You may not be emotionally involved in someone’s life, but your reading of people is perfect; you know exactly when someone needs that helping hand, or moment of support. You have the knack of being in the right place at the right time to help your fellow man.

Online Movie Rentals - Why Make The Switch

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

It’s Friday night and people everywhere are trying to decide what movie they would like to unwind with. Video stores are jammed with shoppers, moving up and down the aisles, picking over a New Releases section that resembles a Sunday brunch buffet on Monday morning. For those smart enough to subscribe to an online movie rental service however, the time that others spend driving across town and scrambling to find the latest blockbuster is instead spent opening a bottle of wine, making popcorn and securing the best spot on the couch.

The bricks-and-mortar movie rental shop is still a valuable part of many communities, but the simple truth is that for people that don′t live in a city or large town, the local video store is uninspiring to say the least. And for people that may have tastes that run beyond the latest big-budget thriller, the selection can be utterly disappointing. Which is another reason that online movie rental shops are so valuable. Anyone with an Internet connection can have access to thousands of films from all over the world, and for usually less than what’s charged in a store.

Most online movie rental services generally work in the same fashion. Members create an account, select a particular plan, and then create a list of movies they want to watch. According to the details of the chosen plan, the first films are sent in the mail, and are free to be kept until the member chooses to return them. When they do, the process is repeated. Most plans offer an unlimited number of returns for one monthly fee, although there are usually restrictions on the number of films that can be checked out at once. DVDs are shipped by regular mail, and come in protective packaging. Included with each shipment is a pre-paid return mailer that makes shipping free both ways. Subscribers simply drop the movies in the nearest mailbox and wait for the next batch.

Surpassing the conventional video store in selection, convenience and cost, online movie rental services are obviously the wave of the future. But who are the major players? Netflix invented the concept in 1999 and indeed are still on top, or at least very near. Blockbuster has a large online presence now, although as an incentive, they offer in-store coupons to monthly subscribers, which indicates they mean to keep traffic through the physical store also. There are also a variety of smaller outfits that cater to the movie aficionado. CafeDVD is known as the spiritual home of the cinephile, whereas DVDOvernight and Intelliflix offer a selection of adult entertainment in addition to the regular feature films.

NCAA Tournament Upsets

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Perhaps the two most discussed topics every year when analyzing the NCAA Tournament bracket is the fact that a #12 seed usually beats a #5 seed and the fact that a #1 seed has never lost to a #16 seed.

While both situations garner a lot of media attention, neither is really that unusual when you break it down and analyze the actual probabilities.

The NCAA Tournament expanded to a field of 64 teams in 1985, so we have 22 years of tournaments with the current seeding format. In 20 of those 22 tournaments (91% of the time) a #12 seed has defeated a #5 seed in the first round.

This year there is an 87.4% chance of a #12 winning based on the current odds. Old Dominion 2 (vs. Butler) and Arkansas 2 (vs. USC) are the most likely upsets, followed by Illinois 2½ (vs. Virginia Tech) and then Long Beach State 7 (versus Tennessee). As you can see, only a Long Beach State win would be considered more than a mild upset. The other three #12 seeds (Old Dominion, Arkansas, and Illinois) are all barely underdogs at 105, 110, and 125 on the money-line.

The 87.4% chance of a #12 seed winning this season is found by multiplying the money-line odds of all four #5 seeds which comes out to 12.6% or an 8-to-1 chance that all four #5 seeds win this year, which is very close to the 22-year average.

While a #12 seed is likely to win again this year, it is even more likely that all four #1 seeds win their opening round games. In fact, a #1 has never lost to a #16 seed (88-0 SU), although there have been some close calls, including Albany’s double-digit lead versus Connecticut last year.

The mathematical chance of a #16 seed winning this season is 5% which is probably a bit higher than most people would initially think; however it becomes clear when you view the game-by-game probabilities.

The biggest favorite is Florida -28 (vs. Jackson State) who has a 99.8% chance of winning straight-up, while North Carolina -27½ (vs. Eastern Kentucky) has a 99.7% of winning outright.

The next two games are where the odds come down a bit as Ohio State -21 (vs. Central Connecticut State) has a 98.4% chance of winning, while Kansas -18½ (vs. Niagara) has a 97.1% chance of winning outright.

When multiplying the four SU percentages together we get 95.1% which is the probability of another 4-0 SU start for the #1 seeds. Overall, this means once in every 20 years a #16 should win a game, so maybe we are closer than people realize to that eventual monster upset.

Learn Piano by Ear

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Have you always wanted to learn to play the piano by ear? Well, now you can! Playing the piano by ear is easy and fun! My students have been learning to play the piano by ear for over 17 years. In fact, one student is 65 years old and is having the time of her life learning songs from her youth! Other students are children as young as 9 years old (although some children begin as early as five years old).

To learn piano by ear, one must first learn about the piano as an instrument. Different from reading notes, the student is required to have some knowledge of the instrument so he/she can learn piano. In my lessons, I follow some easy basic steps to learn piano by ear.

1. First, I teach students the names of the white and black notes on the piano. This involves learning what a 1/2 step and a whole step is so that the student can name the black notes as either a sharp or flat. Sharping (#) a note requires the student to raise a note 1/2 step and flatting (b) a note requires the student to lower the note 1/2 step.

2. After learning the names of the white and black notes, my students then learn the C scale. The C scale begins on middle C and continues “up” playing each white note until you reach the next “C” note. That consists of eight white notes in consecutive order. (CDEFGABC). The scale can also be numbered as 12345671. That means that the letters and numbers should coorelate as:

C D E F G A B C 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1

3. Students then learn how to make the C chord by learning the rule for making a chord. To make the C chord, the students learns to play the numbers 1-3-5 together in order to play the C chord.

4. Steps 2 and 3 are repeated for the scale and chords for F and G.

5. Finally, the student is ready to begin learning how to pick out the melody to a simple song. This is a very important step and is the most exciting step, because the student is learning how to predict the next note when learning a melody.

Scattered through the poems—some long, some only three lines—are lyrical lines and interesting descriptions.
