Heisman Trophy Top-10 - Monday November 7

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Virginia Tech’s 27-7 home loss to Miami means it’s clear sailing for a USC/Texas showdown in the year’s Rose Bowl. It’s the game everyone wants to see and assuming neither USC nor Texas stumbles, this year’s title game will undoubtedly feature the 2005 Heisman winner. While there can be a reasonable debate over where one places Leinart, Bush or Young on his Heisman ballot, anyone not placing these three guys one, two and three should have their Heisman votes taken away from them, PERMANENTLY!! My latest Heisman update follows.

1) MATT LEINART (USC) Last Week: 1. I’ve been a Leinart supporter from the start. I moved Bush into my number spot after the Notre Dame game but moved Leinart back to the top spot last week and he remains there this week after another excellent performance. The Notre Dame game ended a three-game stretch in which Leinart had gone without a TD pass in two of those games but he’s responded by leading USC to three consecutive 50-point games (team now owns a school single-season record of five) while throwing for 11 TDs and just one interception. Leinart led the Trojans to scores on all SEVEN of the team’s first half possessions against Stanford and USC led 44-7 at the break. Leinart wasn′t asked to stick around to the end, as USC won its 31st straight game (51-21), its 25th straight home game and its 21st straight Pac-10 game. He game stats were 22-of-28 for 259 yards with four TDs and no interceptions. He broke another USC school record, passing Carson Palmer for the most 200-yard passing games in school history with 32. He extended his Pac-10 record of career passing TDs to 94 (just 21 career interceptions) and upped his career mark as a starter to 34-1. I’m not sure how one CAN′T give this guy some extra-credit for career accomplishments? Statistically, he’s having even a better year than when he won the award last year, as his current QB rating of 170.5 leads the nation and he’s topped 300 yards passing SIX times this year after doing it just five times in 2003 and 2004 combined. His season stats are: 191-of-286 66.8 2771 yards 23 TDs 6 INTs / 3 rush TDs.

2) REGGIE BUSH (USC) Last Week: 2. Bush will surely have his supporters and it’s hard to argue against them. I don’t have a single knock on Bush, other than I prefer Leinart. After two straight games of less than 100 yards rushing, Bush used a 42-yard TD run in the first quarter to top 100 yards for the SIXTH time in nine games this year. Bush, like Leinart, is having a better year than he did in 2004. Bush had just two 100-yard games in 2004 and despite sharing carries and the spotlight in the USC backfield with LenDale White, he’s over 1,000 yards for the season (had just 902 all of last year) and ranks second in the nation with 193.2 YPG in all-purpose yards. However, it’s my feeling that Bush peaked in the Notre Dame game and while Leinart has been “deadly efficient″ the last three weeks, Bush has been (for him), merely mortal. Let’s see how the final three games play out for both USC and these two talented teammates. His season stats are: 13 carries 1022 yards 8.3 YPC 11 TDs / 27 catches 311 yards 11.5 YPC 2 TDs.

3) VINCE YOUNG (Texas) Last Week: 3. It was my feeling about a month ago that this was clearly a two-man race. However, Vince Young has changed all that with his recent play! Texas crushed Baylor this past Saturday, 62-0. Going back to the Oklahoma State game in which they trailed the Cowboys 28-9, the Longhorns have now outscored their opponents 100-0! Young was 16-of-27 for 298 yards with two TDs (both in the 3rd quarter) and no interceptions. He ran for 53 more yards (eight carries) but didn’t score on the ground. His 351 yards of total offense marked the FOURTH time in the last six games in which he’s topped 300 yards in game, including that career-high effort of 506 against Oklahoma State two weeks ago. He’s already totaled nearly 300 passing yards more than he had all of last year (as well as for six more TD passes) plus he’s the Longhorns’ leading rusher in 2005 as well. The win over Baylor was Texas’ 16th straight, the school’s longest since its 30-game streak from 1968-70. Young is now 26-2 as a starter and has CLEARLY made this a three-man race! His season stats are: 136-of-217 62.7 2133 yards 18 TDs 8 INTs / 111 carries 778 yards 7.0 YPC 8 TDs.

4) BRADY QUINN (Notre Dame) Last Week: 4. In some other year, Brady would be right in the Heisman mix but as well as he’s played, the best he can hope for this year, is an invite to New York (which he most assuredly will get!). Quinn is breaking Notre Dame records weekly or extending records he’s already broken. He threw two TD passes in the first quarter this week against Tennessee and after a 78-yard punt return for a TD, the Irish led the Vols, 21-3 (early 2nd quarter). However, Tennessee was able to tie the game at 21-all. Facing a third-and-10 in the early fourth quarter, Quinn’s short pass was broken for a 73-yard play and shortly after that, his third TD pass of the game, propelled Notre Dame to a 41-21 win. He finished 20-of-33 for 295 yards with three TDs and no interceptions. He extended his school record to 13 straight games with at least one TD pass and the 295 passing yards marked his 13th career game of more than 250 yards (also extending a record he already owns). He’s now got 6,984 career passing yards, just 618 yards shy of the school’s all-time mark. Notre Dame moved to No. 11 in the latest BCS standings which is important, because the Irish need a BCS ranking of a least 12 plus nine wins (they would have to win-out), to get that all-important BCS bid! His season stats are: 195-of-299 65.2 2647 yards 23 TDs 4 INTs / 1 rush TD.

5) DREW OLSON (UCLA) Last Week: 5. I wasn’t sure who to place fifth this week but finally decided on Olson, despite the fact that UCLA was beaten 52-14 by Arizona. October was a magical month for the Bruins, as Olson led the team to FOUR fourth-quarter comeback wins. In each case, the Bruins trailed by at least double-digits. That’s quite an achievement for a team that had gone just 12-13 in Karl Dorrell’s first two seasons and for a QB who had completed 55.6 percent of his passes with a modest TD-to-interception ratio of 32-25 in his first three years. Olson’s been brilliant all season and even though there was no comeback in the cards for the Bruins this past Saturday (they trailed 21-0 at the end of the 1st quarter, 31-7 at the half and were outscored 21-0 in the 3rd quarter!), Olson had decent ‘numbers’. He finished the game 23-of-38 for 232 yards with two TDs and nary an interception. Olson is as good a choice as anyone for this spot. His season stats are: 196-of-295 66.4 2399 yards 25 TDs 3 INTs / 1 rush TD.

6) CODY HODGES (Texas Tech) Last Week: NR. Of course Hodges suffers greatly from the view that ANYONE can be successful in Mike Leach’s high-powered offense but let’s give this 5th-year senior his due. He entered this season with just 12 career passing attempts and has Tech at 8-1 (only loss came to Texas) ranked higher than at any time since the 1977 season. He completed 29-of-44 for 408 yards with two TDs and one interception in last Saturday’s 56-17 rout of Texas A&M (also had a rushing TD). He’s now topped 300 yards in SEVEN of his nine games this year, including four games of better than 400 yards (had 643 vs Kan St!). His 395.1 YPG leads the nation in total offense. System or not, this is some first year! His season stats are: 285-of-420 67.9 3502 yards 27 TDs 9 INTs / 3 rush TDs.

7) MAURICE DREW (UCLA) Last Week: 6. Unlike teammate Drew Olson, Maurice Drew had a miserable game in UCLA′s first loss of the season. He ran for just 41 yards on 12 carries and caught three passes for 25 yards. However, he’s been a major part of UCLA′s 8-1 season and has been a key performer in all of the team’s comeback wins. His 18 TDs have him ranked fifth in the nation in scoring (12.0 PPG) and his 171.1 YPG have him ranked eighth in all-purpose yards. His season stats are: 146 carries 728 yards 5.0 YPC 11 TDs / 26 catches 385 yards 14.8 YPC 4 TDs / 3 TDs on kick returns.

8) DeANGELO WILLIAMS (Memphis) Last Week: 7. Memphis jumped out to a 17-3 lead over UAB last Tuesday but wound up losing, 37-20. Williams was over 100 yards at the half and finished with his SEVENTH straight 100-yard game (four of 200 or more!) of the season (21-167). You DON’T win the Heisman playing at Memphis, especially if the team is just 4-4 but Williams deserves to be in everybody’s top-10. He’s now posted 31 career 100-yard games (including eight 200-yard games) and is unquestionably one of the nation’s finest players, ranking FIRST in both rushing YPG (184.5) all-purpose yards (195.0 YPG). His season stats are: 216 carries 1476 yards 6.8 YPC 12 TDs / 10 catches 51 yards 5.1 YPC 0 TDs.

9) LAURENCE MARONEY (Minnesota) Last Week: 8. Minnesota got back on the winning track with a 42-21 win over Indiana last Saturday but a less than 100% Maroney finished with just 85 yards (and one TD) on 15 carries. Maroney has topped 100 yards in SEVEN of his nine games this year (three times topping 200 yards) and owns 20 career 100-yard games (team is 16-4). His 152.0 YPG average ranks him third in the nation in rushing and he’s accomplished all this despite that fact that backfield mate Gary Russell has run for 882 yards (6.9 YPC) and 15 TDs! His season stats are: 248 carries 1345 yards 5.4 YPC 10 TDs / 15 catches 158 yards 10.5 YPC 1 TD.

10) JEROME HARRISON (Washington State) Last Week: NR. NOBODY wins the Heisman with a 3-6 team (unless your name is Paul Hornung, you play for Notre Dame and the year is 1956!) but Jerome Harrison is my choice for the No. 10 slot. Despite losing 27-24 to Arizona State this past Saturday, the team’s SIXTH consecutive loss, Harrison ran for 240 yards on 38 carries! He′s topped 100 yards in all NINE of the Cougars′ games this year and going back to last year, has topped the century mark in 12 straight games. That ties the Pac-10 record for consecutive 100-yard games set just last year, by Cal’s JJ Arrington. He′s ranked second to Williams in rushing at 172.2 YPG and shouldn’t be penalized for his team’s poor play. He′s clearly one of the year’s best performers. Maybe not top-10 material but he gets his ‘props′ this week in my poll. His season stats are: 244 carries 1550 yards 6.4 YPC 14 TDs / 15 catches 128 yards 8.5 YPC 0 TDs.

The Digicams Of Generation Y: A Photo-enthusiast’s Paradise!

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

They are smaller, but they perform greater tricks than the colossal, tripod stand cameras of the yesteryears or the more recent film cameras with optical viewfinders. Yes, Dave Etchells, owner of the Imaging Resource website Imaging-resource.com rightly says: “Digital has reawakened photo enthusiasts’ love of photography again”. ‘Digital cameras’ or ‘digicams’ as they are fondly baptized by the generation-y, have the perfect blend of technology and artistry to capture the beauty of any moment effortlessly. From professional-like digital single-lens reflexes, to megapixel sensors (megapixel: a measurement of a picture’s resolution.), from ‘point-and-shoot’ attributes with 3- and 4-megapixel to Optical Zoom features, they have truly enriched the world of everyday snapshot photography as well as that of graphic communications.

Using no traditional film and record images on a memory chip, the digital cameras manufactured by various market-leaders are providing consumers, professionals and cinematographers with the sheer ecstasy and delight of taking brilliant color snapshots that will last for a lifetime. Yes, if you are a photo-enthusiast of this generation, you would definitely like to go for cameras that create awe-inspiring pictures with vibrant colors at the touch of a button without having to wait for the elaborate, time-consuming photo-processing sessions at the lab. At the same time, you would also crave for the brilliance of imaging technology and professional-quality photo prints with the freedom to crop and edit high-resolution pictures with 4.0-5.0 megapixels and more. Wonder why professionals who used to adore the ‘legendary’ film cameras have switched to digital models? Why won’t they, if the digital technology gifts them with cameras that instantaneously capture moments depending upon image size, file format, media type, that store endless images as digital files on reusable memory cards or discs? Besides, won’t an everyday snapshot taker love the idea of uploading the pictures to an online photo-album site to share with the geographically remote, and of downloading image files to his computer for printing on his home printer? The Digicams allow you to do all this, and much more that cannot be discussed with full potential in a single article like this.

So to speak, Eastman Kodak Company, Canon, Sony and Nikon happen to reign the realm among professional photographers as well as among casual snapshot takers globally. The feature-rich digital cameras manufactured by these companies have received global attention from users who cherish the activities of taking, sharing, printing and viewing images for memories, information, and sheer entertainment.

Now, who wouldn’t want to keep 1500 and more of his treasured memories right at his fingertips, when these cameras are around? And yes, ‘staying connected’ being the buzzword of today’s times, anyone would want to explore the freedom of ‘wireless photography’ that lets him print real pictures at home, share albums instantly with friends and family around the world as well as transfer pictures and videos to computers without USBs (classic example: the KODAK EASYSHARE product range).

No wonder, the sales pitch of digicams are soaring every year, for which the Photo Marketing Association, US has commented: “Digital cameras are expected to continue their growth in 2006 before reaching their peak at the end of that year or the next”.

However, let these trade statistics bug the market-research analysts. The photo-lovers are delighted to share their world right from the palm of their hands with these wonderful cameras. Let them be so, for years to come!

Lighten Up

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Lighten up before you blow up
Lighten up before you have a meltdown
Lighten up before you hastily speak up
Foolishly put your foot in your mouth
Send your friendships south
Destroy, divide, and demoralize
Take time for yourself and realize
That unless you settle down
And find solitude to relax
You will be susceptible to attacks
Irritable and emotional fits of rage
Check your pulse and gauge
When your blood is beginning to boil
Don’t let your temper let you spoil
Your wonderful relationships
At home, school, and on the job
If necessary, pray and talk to God
Eliminate explosive tendencies
Humble yourself, fall to your knees
Remember to say thank you and please
Take time to enjoy life and breathe
Rid your soul of fear and begin to believe
Lest torment entangle and cripple you
Believe for grace and peace in all you do
Lighten up, chill out, calm down a bit too
Life certainly is not all about special you
Others are important and have value too
Therefore awake to kindness and tenderness
Speak gently, cultivate friendships, and bless
Nurture people and listen with some sincerity
Be patient, long-suffering, and not so pushy
Breakout of your perfectionist mentality
Come back and down to loving reality
Respect humanity, and drop the profanity
Beware lest pride causes you to be a fatality
Full of yourself and driven beyond all else
Going through life fast, but getting nowhere
With your hair on fire, burning with desire
Yet dealing yourself a devilish and deadly blow
As you rush and scurry through life and go
Forgetting your family and faithful friends
Driving on a collision course to a bitter end
Increasing in enemies daily, losing joy and glee
Speeding through life recklessly and sadly
Missing out on what life was meant to be
Lighten up before you die prematurely.

Japanese Kanji Symbol Translation For Your Tattoo

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

There are three types of Japanese symbols to choose from when considering a Japanese style tattoo. Kanji is by far the most popular of these three Japanese symbols, especially if you are looking for a unique and stylish tattoo design. Every individual Kanji symbol represents an idea or meaning and there are literally thousands of Kanji ideographs up to some estimates of 40,000 so it makes sense to go to a specialist to give you a proper translation and purchase a stencil before you commit to your tattoo.

The other two Japanese symbol types are called Hiragana and Katakana. Hiragana is used as an everyday writing style script and used in media and print such as magazines and newspapers it has a much more rounded appearance than Kanji symbols and some people refer to these Hiragana symbols as cursive, so when searching for a Hiragana tattoo remember it may be referred to as a cursive tattoo. It is possible to mix these styles so that you have writing ( Hiragana ) and your Kanji (idea or meaning ) in one sentence.

Katakana symbols are mainly used to write non Japanese names i.e. the translation of non Japanese words and have a more angular and sharp appearance than Hiragana symbols. Hiragana and Katakana are know together as Kana and there are approximately 46 symbols for each set of Hiragana and Katakana these symbols were originally based on the Kanji symbols developed in the 9th century and have been modified since this time to produce the symbols you see today.

Because the Japanese writing style is tremendously complex it is exceptionally important that you get a 100% accurate Japanese symbol translation for your Kanji design or you may well end up with a cursive tattoo that has a completely different meaning than you intended.

Guitar Lessons - Learn To Play Today

Monday, February 27th, 2006

We all love music in some form or another and many of us have pined for the ability to play the guitar in our lives. Well nowdays there are many options for learning how to play the guitar whether you like folk, rock, jazz, or classical among the many types of music out there. Here are some of the more common ways to learn to play theguitar. Try each method to see what works best for you.

Group Lessons: Learning guitar in a group setting can be lessintimidating for the beginning musician. You not only get thebenefit of having a teacher to help you along you can often judge your progress by where the other students are in the class. Theworst part about taking guitar lessons in a group setting is the teachers time is divided so you may not get as much attention as ou might need.

Private Lessons: This is the best way to learn to play the guitar if you can find the right teacher. The instructor can gauge your progress each week and custom design your lessons for you. You have your teachers’ undivided attention and you can ask anything you feel is not clear.

CD Lessons: There are many instruction CDs available in nearly any style you can think of. The advantage of this style of learning is you can listen to the CD as many times as you want.
Any part that is not clear can be replayed as many times as needed. The disadvantages include the songs may not be the ones you desire to learn and the instruction is more general without any way of knowing where you are in your musical journey.

DVD Lessons: Instruction on DVD includes all the good and bad points of the CD instruction. The number one advantage to learning guitar by watching DVD video is you can see what the instructor is doing. Visual learning goes a long way toward answering the questions burning in your mind.
Music Books: Music books are a time-honored way to learn how to play the guitar. You can find more books on more different styles than most any other way to learn. You need to be proficient in reading music if you do not know the song you are learning. Most folks have a hard time getting the song right if they do not know the song they are learning.

Playing With Other People: The very best way to learn to play the guitar is to get together with other people and play. This is the fastest way to learn. You will learn more by getting out and playing with other people than you ever will sitting at home playing by yourself.

Internet: In these modern times the Internet is a wonderful resource in learning to play the guitar. There are many websites that will show you how to play the exact notes your guitar hero plays. Membership sights are plentiful where for a small monthly fee you can learn most any style you choose.

Slowing Down Recordings: You can purchase software that slows down your favorite recordings. This allows you to hear each phrase at a speed where you can pick out the different notes. This is a great way to learn to play.

Friends: Do not overlook your guitar playing buddies. Most guitar pickers are a friendly bunch who will be more than happy to help you along.

The method you decide to use to learn to play guitar is up to you. Try to practice four or five times a week for 30 minutes at a time and you will be playing guitar before you know it.

Make Your Own Mardi Gras Masks at a Kid’s Party

Monday, February 27th, 2006

You can help your kids celebrate Mardi Gras by making up easy Mardi Gras Masks. For this you’ll need:

• Construction paper in several colors

• Scissors

• Glitter

• Glue sticks

• Markers or crayons

• Some loose craft feathers

• Straws

• Tape

These will be those half masks that you hold up to your face. First have the kids each pick out a piece of construction paper in the color that they like. Then, help them draw the outline of the half mask that they want and help them cut it out. Don’t forget to put eye holes in the right spots.

Once the kids have the construction paper masks cut out they can start decorating them. They can put drops of glue around the outside of their masks and line them with the fluffy colored feathers. The kids can also spread a thin layer of glue on their masks and sprinkle glitter on them. Let the glue dry and shake off the excess glitter for a sparkly feather mask.

You can create an eyeliner effect on the masks by carefully outlining the eyeholes with the marker. You can also draw in whiskers, freckles or any other design that you like on the masks.

To attach your half masks to their holders simply tape one end of a straw to one side of the half mask. If you want you can decorate the straw too by covering it in a thin layer of glue and rolling it in the glitter before you tape it to the mask.

You can also get more involved in the making of your Mardi Gras masks by getting some plastic beads and sewing them to the masks in elaborate designs. Try stringing up a row of beads and tacking them to the outside rims of the masks like a garland.

Songwriting - The Art of Writing a Good Song

Monday, February 27th, 2006

Did you know that good songwriting is often the key to establishing a successful music career? But more than that, it can be fun! When you write a song you are able to express yourself in new and creative ways. Whether you′re sad, happy, angry, or in love… with words, you can fly!

Freedom of expression is one of the greatest priviledges we have, but with it comes some responsibility. Words are very powerful and have been used successfully by many for better, or worse. When writing a song, consider how your words are going to impact your listener. Do you wish to alienate them, or draw them into your perspective on things?

A good song will create an emotional reaction in people, and that’s exactly what you’re trying to achieve! You want to get your listener to feel with you. You want to move them emotionally. You want them to like your song and be willing to listen to it again and again. If you can get your audience to identify with you on some level, you will be on the road to creating a good song.

As you are stirring up your creative juices you may discover that finding just the RIGHT word is sometimes a bit frustrating. But with the RIGHT songwriting tips and resources it becomes a lot easier! Here are three of the most important songwriting tools you should have:

1. DICTIONARY - A dictionary is essential when writing. Besides giving you the correct meaning of a word, it will also help you to express yourself more clearly. You will discover new words while expanding your vocabulary too!

2. THESAURUS - A thesaurus is another important tool to help with creating your songwriting material. You can use a thesaurus to find different words that have similiar meaning.

3. RHYMING DICTIONARY - As the name implies, a rhyming dictionary organizes words that rhyme in alphabetical order using the vowel sounds A E I O U. For example, if you were looking for a word that rhymes with Abel you would look under A sounds. Words rhyming with Abel would be listed in alphabetical order.

There isn’t really a secret formula for writing a good song because determining what is “good” is subjective and a matter of personal opinion (some great songs have broken all the so called “rules”). However, many successful songwriters have used the following format to write a “Hit″ song:

INTRO: Approximately 4-8 measures of instrumental music that contains part or all of “the hook” (a part of the melody that is easy to remember).

VERSE: Each verse should be written in such a way as to “set up” the chorus. Try to keep the meter of your song even by matching the syllables of your words. Be consistent with the sentences that rhyme. Verses should create an anticipation of fulfillfment.

CHORUS: This is where you make your statement. Stress the most important part of your song and make it tasty. Think of your chorus or “hook” as being like the icing on a cake. You want your words to be worth remembering.

VERSE: Continue to follow the idea of your song all the way through, don’t get side-tracked!

CHORUS: This is where you have the opportunity to repeat your “hook″ which should continue to emphasize your songs main theme.

BRIDGE: This is where you can create some interest and tension by changing your melody line, modulating to a different key, or adding an instrumental guitar part, etc. Don’t make it too long, approximately 8 measures or so. It should build or crescendo to the final chorus.

FADE CHORUS: This is generally the same as your first chorus, but you will end by repeating it over and over, then gradually fade out to end your song. Use your “hook” generously, but don’t over-kill!

Be flexible and use your imagination! Don′t just copy or mimic what is currently popular. Remember that some of the biggest names in the music business made it to the top because they were not afraid to be ORIGINAL or have a different sound. So, experiment, be yourself, and most of all- have fun!

Are You a Sit N Go Pro?

Monday, February 27th, 2006

Have you ever hit a dead end when you have tried to reach success? Have you ever thought that you were on the right track to success only to have everything lifted from under you? How is success created? In particular, how can you become successful within the Poker playing realm?

Most Poker players created their own success. Nothing was given to them. So how did they manage to go from nothing, to Poker playing successes? Without giving this much thought, one might think that they did things that no one else had thought of. Yeah right! A simple formula helped them achieve this success, and many other successful Poker players will agree that this formula is what helped them achieve success as well.

—————————————————————————-
Specialize Hard Work Perseverance Small Goals = Success
—————————————————————————-

Specialize
————
There is probably no area of Poker that avails itself for the individual succeed with a limited bankroll than Sit N Go tournaments. Sit N Go tournaments have prove to be an excellent training ground for the would be Poker Pro as it forces the individual to develop an all around game due to the beginning, middle and end game structure. Specializing in Sit N Go tournament affords the aspiring Poker Pro the greatest opportunity to develop an all around game with the least amount of danger to destroying their bankroll.

Hard Work
————-
If you do not know how to work hard or are not willing to work hard, then playing Poker (or owning any business for that matter) is not for you. If you have good work ethics you can achieve success regardless of your situation.

Perseverance
—————-
Many Poker players have had many bad days, weeks and sometimes months, but they were not afraid to fail. They have been able to succeed because they were able to persevere. Being able to set aside a bad day and learn from your mistakes is a major component to Poker playing success.

Small Goals
————–
Many Professional Poker players started with small bankroll and because of that, they set small goals. They believed that if you could generate any sort of profit then you are better off than you were before you started. If you look at playing Poker with the mind set that you have to make 500/day within the first week, you are just setting yourself up for disappointment and failure. Why not try to make $50/day, or even $25/day, and then work towards duplicating your success? It’s important to take baby steps and start with realistic goals. When you are a beginner you need to realize that you will be competing against seasoned players and professionals who have major experience. Do not try to duplicate what they do or what they make. Set your own small goals and work toward bigger goals while keeping in mind your 500/day goal as motivation.

If you are hard working, can persevere while learning from your mistakes, and can set realistic goals for yourself, then your mindset is conducive to instruction and you will be on your way to achieving success as a Sit N Go Pro.

Lorenz Hart

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

Lorenz Hart has proved by his outstanding work to be one of the best lyricists that the world has ever seen. His life is not just a life of a creative person; it is a life that may be called a “mystery”. So many people have tried to reveal the secret of Hart’s lyrics but it is obvious that the peculiarity of his lyrics relate to the peculiarity of his inner world. Only a person with a rich storage of ideas, philosophical opinions and an ability to transmit it through creative activity can produce a creation with a very deep sense. Lorenz Hart managed to transmit all his emotions and we must even say his heart into the lyrics he produced. No wonder, even nowadays-young people respect and admire the heritage that Lorenz Hart has left to us all. To have a better understanding of Hart’s works it is very important to understand him as a person, to know what was his living situation and childhood like.

Lorenz Hart was born on May 2, 1895. It was the moment of entering the new XX century. As it is very well known beginning of this century caused a lot of changes in every single sphere of the life of people. Musical sphere needed changes, too. It needed something new and fresh, something “not like everybody else”. Hart was born in New York City and Manhattan was the place that Hart learned the world from. Another thing to mention is that Hart was a descendant of the known poet Heinrich Heine. Hart was not the only son of Frieda and Max Hart. Hart was raised in a family where he was the eldest son and therefore this required a high responsibility from his side. He got his education Columbia Grammar School and attended the Columbia School of Journalism. Journalism taught him to express his thoughts clearly and must have had a positive influence on Hart as a future talented lyricist. It is possible to say that his “initial” contribution to the music world started with his acquaintance with Richard Rogers through a friend. Afterwards these two names would be remembered only in couple.

At the beginning they started writing for amateur musicals presented as “charity benefits and Columbia Varsity Shows”. Among the first presented works – “Fly with me” produced in 1920. Nevertheless there was another work before that that may be fully considered a “ great start”. It was the song “Any Old Place With You,” featured in the 1919 in the Broadway musical comedy “A lonely Romeo”. So as their alliance has been strong and productive from its very beginning. The first real success they faced was the Theatre Guild production “Garrick Gaieties” in 1925. Right afterwards this success Rogers and Hart began their magnificent works for Broadway and London’s West End and spent over 10 years writing for them. They work very hard; they impressed and surprised the audience, not letting themselves rest. During this period such works as: Dearest enemy, Betsy, Peggy-Ann, The girl friend, Chee-Chee and Connecticut Yankee were created and made a lot of “noise” in the music world.

And it is obvious that after such a success in Broadway their only way was Hollywood. Hart still worked hard and together with Rogers they started creating movie musicals. Their movie works included: “Love me tonight” with Maurice Chevalier; “The phantom president” with George M. Cohan; “Hallelujah, I’m a bum” with Al Jolson and many more. Hart was extremely well-paid by that time and when later on him and Rogers were invited back to Broadway Hart’s salary was the first salary of a lyricist to be equal to a composer salary. Roger and Hart’s joint work has produced numerous of outstanding and really talented songs and musical. Their work continued until 1943, when Hart died of pneumonia. Nevertheless his death did not stop the popularity and recognition of his work, his lyrics are immortal and still admired by million of people all over the world.

We may have put a full stop here, but the Hart’s story would not be full. All these were just the consequences of hard work and to understand Lorenz Hart it is vital to know what was his “real” life like. And if somebody would make any conclusions based on the successful debuts he would be mistaken. Hart’s life was not easy at all. Lorenz Hart was a homosexual and it was very hard for him to differ from everybody else like that. His self-esteem therefore was not adequate. He constantly felt inferiority and tried hard to feel normal. It is not necessary to be a psychologists to determine that it was his attempt to struggle his own homosexuality that lead him to alcoholism. Hart alcoholism advanced and it was the reason that his organism was so weak and could get pneumonia. Hart did also physically “differ” from other people.

He felt terrible for being extremely short and having a head larger than in was supposed to be in relation to his body. All these factors caused the very deep psychological discomfort for Lorenz Hart and made him want to escape from it through the usage of different substances. His unhappiness resulted in the magnificent love songs, that revealed a deep desire to love and to be loved, to be what you are and to be accepted being whoever you are. The controversy of his lyrics is reflected in their being very simple, but carrying such a deep meaning that touches every single person who listens to it to the very core. Through his work Hart should that he was a really talented, because only a truly talented person can still create awesome works being so emotionally devastated and feeling inferiority. Hart’s life was a constant struggle of his real “essence” and what was considered to be acceptable in that time. The social frames back then were very strict and to get out of them was dangerous.

And it is too sad, that the world lost such a talented man just for not letting him be what he was through its ”restrictions”. The song that truly reflects his inner world and his view over his life is the song “This funny life”:
A mop! A broom! A pail!
The stuff my dreams are made of!
You hope, you strive, you fail!
The world’s a place you’re not afraid of.
But soon you are brought down to earth,
And you learn what your dream was worth.
This funny world
Makes fun of the things that you strive for
This funny world
Can laugh at the dreams you’re alive for.
If you’re beaten, conceal it!
There’s no pity for you
For the world cannot feel it.
Just keep to yourself
Weep to yourself.
This funny world
Can turn right around and forget you.
It’s always sure
To roll right along when you’re through.
If you are broke you shouldn’t mind.
It’s all a joke, for you will find
This funny world is making fun of you.

This song had very important message from Hart. All his life he strived for what he really needed – to be himself, but he could not do it, because the world around did not consider it to be appropriate. He had to hide what he wanted and hide all his failures because the world around him would never accept his being like that or feel sympathy for him. The world around made fun of his and made his suffer and try to escape from the inner conflict at the bottom of the bottle. He was more than a talented man. He was a man that was not understood and a man that just wanted to feel loved. And no matter how hard people tried no movie could reveal the truth about the great talented lyricist by the name Lorenz Hart.
